Former Notre Dame catcher Carson Tinney could land at Florida
Former star Notre Dame catcher Carson Tinney may soon have a new home.
Per Baseball America's Jacob Rudner, Florida is in the mix for the former Fighting Irish backstop, who hit .348 with 17 home runs and 53 RBIs as a sophomore with the Fighting Irish. He is one of the more intriguing players currently in the transfer portal.
This past season, the Gators used Luke Heyman and Brody Donay behind the plate. An injury to Heyman near the end of the year forced Donay to become the full-time catcher the rest of the way, but his defense was an issue. Could the Gators shift him to first base or designated hitter?
UF did bring in JUCO catcher AJ Malzone, but landing Tinney would be a real coup. It helps the cause that the Gators landed former ND pitcher Ricky Reeth, whose pitches were caught by Tinney in South Bend this past season.
Losing Tinney was a tough blow for the Irish. He was the team's best player and a centerpiece of Shawn Stiffler's rebuild in South Bend.

Big Ten reportedly floating radical new College Football Playoff idea
The future of the College Football Playoff has been a key topic of discussion all offseason. ESPN secured a six-year, $7.8 billion contract that ensures the network will remain the sole media rights holder of the event through the 2031-32 season in March of 2024. But, whether or not the CFP stays at a 12-team model or expands has been one of the hot button issues of college football. After plenty of back-and-forth and a spring and summer full of discussion and disagreements, the Big Ten has suddenly introduced a radical new idea for the CFP's future. According to Pete Thamel of ESPN, the Big Ten has floated the idea of massive expansion to the College Football Playoff that could bring the postseason field to 24 or 28 teams. While Thamel reports that the idea is in its very early stages, the proposal eliminates conference title games and offers a large number of auto bids for all four power leagues, sources said. In the proposed 28-team CFP model, the Big Ten and SEC would each get seven auto bids while the ACC and Big 12 would each receive five. There would be two auto bids for the non-Power 4 conferences and two at-large teams. The 28-team format would put 20 playoff games on campus, which would accentuate the success of that from last year's CFP. The CFP Committee would seed the field and pick the at-large teams. Per Thamel, Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti ran the idea by his conference Wednesday, sources said, and that it has begun being shared by others. In order to expand the playoff before the 2026 season, the expectation is that leaders need to reach a resolution before the end of this year. Momentum for a 16-team CFP format picked up steam throughout the spring, but leaders throughout college athletics haven't seen eye to eye on exactly how bids to a 16-team CFP would be awarded. The 5+11 model is supported by both the Big 12 and the ACC and it gained more support from the SEC after the league's spring meetings. The 5+11 model would include the five highest-ranked conference champions and 11 at-large bids. Another 16-team CFP model featured the Big Ten and SEC each receiving four automatic bids, the ACC and Big 12 receiving a pair of automatic qualifiers, one bid to the Group of 6 champion and then three at-large bids. Although coach Liam Coen said Saturday that starters would play against the Saints, the Jaguars declined to commit to getting Hunter on the field after he sustained an upper-body injury during a scrimmage Thursday. Hunter is expected to go through pregame warmups inside the Superdome before the team determines his playing status. The Heisman Trophy winner was held out of a walk-through Friday as a precaution. He was on the field for the hourlong session and carried a play-calling sheet while following the action closely. Hunter played on offense and defense, totaling 18 snaps, in Jacksonville's preseason opener against Pittsburgh last Saturday. He also played both ways during a sloppy scrimmage five days later before crashing hard to the ground while defending a deep pass late. The scrimmage included 10 penalty flags, at least seven dropped passes, an interception and a few more balls that nearly got picked. It was the kind of performance that surely factored into Coen's decision to get his starters — including quarterback Trevor Lawrence — back on the field against the Saints. 'That's fatigue,' Coen said. 'That's lack of concentration when you're getting fatigued and tired. Every time we come out, they go hard.' Hunter was one of 10 players held out of practice this week because of injuries, joining right guard Chuma Edoga, right tackle Anton Harrison, defensive lineman Arik Armstead, defensive lineman Maason Smith, offensive lineman Cole Van Lanen, safety Caleb Ransaw, linebacker Jalen McLeod and cornerbacks Tyson Campbell and Montaric Brown. ___ AP NFL:
