
Uma Ganesh Smruti award for veteran theatre light designer Shivshankar Malode

Nagpur: Celebrated theatre light designer Shivshankar Shyamraoji Malode, who has dedicated over five decades to the art of stage lighting, will be honoured with the prestigious 'Uma-Ganesh Smruti Puraskar 2025', instituted by Vidarbha Gaurav Pratishthan.
Born in 1955, Malode entered the world of theatre in 1970 and went on to become one of the most respected light designers in Vidarbha. Trained under renowned director Shyam Band, he worked with many eminent theatre personalities. Over the years, Malode's artistry illuminated countless landmark productions, ranging from experimental plays to grand musicals.
He is credited with introducing advanced lighting techniques to Nagpur's amateur theatre scene.
Malode was among the first in the region to use Dimmer systems, Par lights, Power Packs, and Pulsar equipment for stagecraft. His lighting expertise was showcased not just in Maharashtra but also in several national and international theatre festivals.
The award is presented in memory of late Ganesh Naidu, an illustrious actor, playwright, director, and music composer of Nagpur's theatre movement. His wife Uma Naidu established a permanent fund to honour his legacy, from which this annual award is instituted.

The honour carries a cash prize of Rs51,000, a memento, and a citation. The felicitation function will be held on August 25 at 6.30pm at Swargiya Ganesh Naidu Smruti Sabhagruha, Lokmat Bhavan.
Vidarbha Gaurav Pratishthan president Nilesh Gandhi said, "Malode's lifelong dedication to theatre lighting has not only enriched countless productions but has also set new benchmarks in backstage artistry. This award is a recognition of his immense contribution to theatre."
