Nigeria's Ogun state & Dubai-based company to build garment factory
The team is preparing for the ground-breaking ceremony of the project in September this year.
Nigeria's Ogun state government and a Dubai-headquartered company, have decided to start work on a $2-billion garment unit, the biggest such factory in Africa. The team is preparing for the ground-breaking ceremony of the project in September this year. With a capacity to produce about 350,000 tonnes of garments per year, the factory would employ between 120,000 to 150,000 direct and indirect workers.
Arise IIP's shareholders are Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), Dubai-headquartered Equitane and Fund for Export Development in Africa (FEDA), a subsidiary of Afreximbank.
With a capacity to produce about 350,000 tonnes of garments per year, the factory would churn out about 4.4 million units of garments every day and employ between 120,000 to 150,000 direct and indirect workers, said state governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, who recently met an Arise IIP delegation led by its president Gagan Gupta.
The project will resuscitate cotton production in Nigeria and would have ripple effects on the economy, he was cited as saying by domestic media reports.
The unit would be located at the Special Agro Processing Zone at the airport city and would turn the state into a garment hub in the continent, he added.

Microsoft races past $4 trillion valuation after solid results
By Pranav Kashyap Microsoft soared past $4 trillion in market valuation on Thursday, becoming the second publicly traded company after Nvidia to surpass the milestone following a blockbuster earnings report. The technology behemoth forecast a record $30 billion in capital spending for the first quarter of the current fiscal year to meet soaring AI demand and reported booming sales in its Azure cloud computing business on Wednesday. Shares of Microsoft were up 6.6% at $546.33 in morning trading. "It is in the process of becoming more of a cloud infrastructure business and a leader in enterprise AI , doing so very profitably and cash generatively despite the heavy AI capital expenditures," said Gerrit Smit, lead portfolio manager, Stonehage Fleming Global Best Ideas Equity Fund. Redmond, Washington-headquartered Microsoft first cracked the $1-trillion mark in April 2019. Its move to $3 trillion was more measured than technology giants Nvidia and Apple, with AI-bellwether Nvidia tripling its value in just about a year and clinching the $4-trillion milestone before any other company on July 9. Apple was last valued at $3.11 trillion. Lately, breakthroughs in trade talks between the United States and its trading partners ahead of President Donald Trump's August 1 tariff deadline have buoyed stocks, propelling the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq to record highs. Microsoft's multibillion-dollar bet on OpenAI is proving to be a game changer, powering its Office Suite and Azure offerings with cutting-edge AI and fueling the stock to more than double its value since ChatGPT 's late-2022 debut. Its capital expenditure forecast, its largest ever for a single quarter, has put it on track to potentially outspend its rivals over the next year. Meta Platforms also doubled down on its AI ambitions, forecasting third-quarter revenue that blew past Wall Street estimates as artificial intelligence supercharged its core advertising business. The social media giant upped the lower end of its annual capital spending by $2 billion - just days after Alphabet made a similar move - signaling that Silicon Valley's race to dominate the artificial-intelligence frontier is only accelerating. - the largest U.S. cloud provider - which will report earnings on Thursday after markets close, rose 1.7%. Wall Street's surging confidence in the company comes on the heels of back-to-back record revenues for the tech giant since September 2022. The stock's rally had also received an extra boost as the tech giant trimmed its workforce and doubled down on AI investments - determined to cement its lead as businesses race to harness the technology. While sweeping U.S. tariffs had investors bracing for tighter business spending, Microsoft's strong earnings have shown that the company's books are yet to take a hit from the levies.

3 Indian education tools shortlisted for inaugural Global Edtech Prize
London, Aug 1 (PTI) Three education technology tools making an impact with innovative learning solutions in India are among the top 10 finalists of an inaugural Global EdTech Prize. Pragati from Room to Read India Trust, Gurukul from Avanti Fellows and LEAD Learning System from LEAD Group were named Top 10 finalists this week. The prize is created to spotlight trailblazing solutions that are driving change and grappling with the most crucial challenges in classrooms around the world. The prize, founded by UK-headquartered T4 Education with Owl Ventures and Digital Promise, will be awarded in three categories of Non-Profits, Start-Ups and Majors, with winners announced at the World Schools Summit in Abu Dhabi, UAE, in November. 'In using technology to solve the greatest challenges in education, you are making a difference to so many lives. The Global EdTech Prize gives you the platform you need to go on and scale that impact," said Vikas Pota, Founder of T4 Education and the Global EdTech Prize. Judged by educators, the prize comes in the form of a platform to help companies and organisations scale their products, tools or services to enhance impact worldwide. Pragati, a foundational literacy and numeracy assessment app, is seen as a scalable digital solution after its classroom observation and monitoring aspect has been adopted by the government of Uttarakhand statewide in the past two years. Gurukul, developed by Avanti Fellows and powered by Capgemini, made its mark as one of India's largest free online test preparation platforms for students preparing for competitive exams. Launched in 2024, Gurukul is a mobile-first, open-source platform tailored for low-resource settings. While Pragati and Gurukul are in the running in the Non-Profits category, LEAD has been chosen in the Majors category for revolutionising school education in India by transforming budget private schools into centres of academic excellence. LEAD Learning System has been recognised for its ability to transform student learning by codifying the best practices of curriculum design, lesson planning, teaching, training, monitoring and remediation and making it available in an easy-to-use form by teachers, students, school leaders and parents. All top 10 finalists from around the world will be invited to the World Schools Summit in Abu Dhabi to showcase their work before an 'Expert Panel" comprising leading figures in the technology and education sectors, including global investors and policymakers. The Expert Panel will then narrow down the final three per category who will present their products and tools before educators to vote by secret ballot to announce the winner in each category live on stage on November 16.
