
Hong Kong lawmakers call for facial recognition system at upgraded land crossing
At a meeting of the Legislative Council's security panel on Monday, some lawmakers also expressed concern that the expanded Huanggang checkpoint, which was designed to handle 200,000 passengers and 15,000 vehicles every day between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, could overload nearby traffic.
In addition to co-location arrangements that allow travellers to clear immigration channels in both jurisdictions at a single site, Secretary for Security Chris Tang Ping-keung told the panel that a new clearance model would be adopted.
The two governments would set up counters side by side inside the port to enhance border clearance efficiency, he said.
The 'collaborative inspection and joint clearance' model, currently used at some checkpoints between Macau and Zhuhai, will allow travellers to queue up once for immigration clearance, shortening the time from around half an hour to five minutes.
'These efforts aim to facilitate the efficient and smooth flow of people and goods, and thus strengthen the connectivity between Hong Kong and other cities in the Greater Bay Area,' Tang said.

China's think-tanks should pay more attention to the nation's actual conditions and rely less on Western knowledge, according to a leading Chinese scholar, who said policy advisers could better reflect and project the country's soft power by incorporating 'Chinese characteristics'. ‘More than a restaurant': Hongkongers bid farewell to social enterprise eatery
Hundreds of diners flocked to a small restaurant in one of Hong Kong's poorest neighbourhoods on Sunday, taking selfies and lining up to secure their favourite order for one last time. 'We expected the crowd, but we are happy that there are so many people supporting them,' said Monica Wong, 52, a resident of the Shek Kip Mei neighbourhood where the restaurant was located. 'It is unfair for the Housing Authority to take back the space; this is a business full of kindness. 'It's selfless of the restaurant to spend so much on the medical care of stray cats, hire single mothers and give free meals to the elderly – how could the government force a business like this to close?'

Hong Kong Covid facility at old Kai Tak airport takes off as youth hostel, culture hub
An unused Covid-19 isolation facility at a prime sea-view site in the heart of Hong Kong will be transformed into a youth hostel and cultural hub, offering 2,900 units at affordable rates and expected to debut in September. The project, renamed 'Runway 1331' and located at the former Kai Tak airport, is expected to provide young people with opportunities for entrepreneurship, cultural exchange and talent development. Named after the old airport's single airstrip, designated Runway 13/31, the project has been developed by Glorise Tourism and Culture, a joint venture between the central government-owned China Tourism Group and entrepreneur Winnie Chiu Wing-kwan. Chiu is also president of hotel chain Dorsett Hospitality International. 'We hope Runway 1331 ultimately will develop into the world's biggest incubator for the youth,' Chiu said on Sunday. The accommodation is equipped with basics such as beds, televisions, tables and chairs.
