Pirates win 5-0 behind McCutchen and Falter to snap 10-game losing streak vs. Padres
Andrew McCutchen homered into the second deck in left field off Dylan Cease, Bailey Falter combined with three relievers on a two-hitter and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat San Diego 5-0 on Saturday night to snap a 10-game losing streak to the Padres.
McCutchen's 396-foot shot leading off the fifth was his fourth of the season and left him one shy of tying Roberto Clemente for third on the Pirates' career list at 240.
Falter (4-3) held the Padres to just two singles while striking out one and walking one in 6 1/3 innings. Caleb Ferguson, Dennis Santana and David Bednar provided hitless relief.
Cease (1-4), who threw the second no-hitter in Padres history on July 25, 2024, at Washington, has gone 10 starts since his only win, April 2 against Cleveland. He allowed three runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings, struck out six and walked one.
The first three Pirates batters reached against Cease, with Bryan Reynolds hitting a single to bring in Oneil Cruz, who was aboard on a leadoff double. Cease retired the first two batters in the fourth before again allowing three straight Pirates to reach. Adam Frazier doubled and scored on Ke'Bryan Hayes' single.
Two innings after McCutchen's homer, the Pirates added on with two runs on four straight hits against Yuki Matsui with one out in the seventh. Reynolds hit an RBI double and Spencer Horwitz an RBI single. Bradgley Rodriguez came on to make his big league debut and got Alexander Canario to ground into a double play on his second pitch.
The 21-year-old Rodriguez, San Diego's No. 14 prospect, fielded Canario's weak grounder and threw to second baseman Jake Cronenworth to start the double play.
Falter went 3-0 in six starts in May.
Pirates LHP Andrew Heaney (3-4, 3.41 ERA) and Padres RHP Randy Vásquez are scheduled to start Sunday's series finale.

Border Officials Told Not to Attend Events Tied to Diversity in Law Enforcement
The Trump administration this year ordered federal border agents and customs officers not to attend events hosted by organizations that support women or minority groups in law enforcement, according to a senior border official. Customs and Border Protection, the largest law enforcement agency in the federal government, issued a little-noticed internal memo in late March telling its officials not to attend events or conferences hosted by organizations like Women in Federal Law Enforcement and the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, or NOBLE, said the senior official, Timothy Quinn. Mr. Quinn worked at the agency for nearly 12 years until he retired on Friday as a result of the policy. In an interview on Monday, Mr. Quinn said the directive was included in a broader travel advisory issued on March 28 to senior officials at the agency, who were then expected to pass along the instruction to the rank and file. The memo, which invoked President Trump's executive order banning diversity practices across the federal government, barred attendance at events or conferences 'that have a gender basis, race basis or a culture basis,' Mr. Quinn said. 'I think that's discrimination,' said Mr. Quinn, the former head of Customs and Border Protection's Office of Intergovernmental Public Liaison. 'I don't understand why we wouldn't engage with these organizations to share this kind of information.' In a statement, Tricia McLaughlin, a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees Customs and Border Protection, said the agency's 'personnel are free to participate in outside groups on their own time.' 'However, C.B.P. will not use taxpayer dollars and official duty hours to fund identity-based events or programs,' Ms. McLaughlin said. Former US midfielder Benny Feilhaber hired as coach of 2nd-tier Oakland Roots
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Former U.S. national team midfielder Benny Feilhaber was hired Monday as coach of the Oakland Roots of the United Soccer League's second-tier Championship. Coach Gavin Glinton was fired earlier Monday after the team opened its league schedule with three wins, seven losses and one tie. The Roots also lost their opening match in the U.S. Open Cup to Tacoma in the third round. The 40-year-old Feilhaber scored two goals in 44 international appearances from 2007-17 and was part of the American team at the 2010 World Cup, appearing in three matches as a substitute. His tiebreaking goal on a 22-yard volley broke a 73rd-minute tie and lifted the U.S. over Mexico 2-1 in the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup final. Born in Brazil and a graduate of UCLA, Feilhaber played for Hamburg, Derby, Aarhus, New England, Kansas City and Los Angeles FC during a club career from 2006-19. Since retiring as a player, he has been an assistant coach at UCLA, Kansas City under-17 coach and head coach of Sporting KC II in third-tier MLS Next Pro. Feilhaber came out of retirement to play for the fourth-tier Omaha Menace when it beat Sporting KC II by 2-1 in the first round of the Open Cup on March 19, and he converted a penalty kick in a 2-1 loss to Union Omaha in the second round on April 2. ___ AP soccer:
