Kota Kinabalu: The integrated maintenance work at Sabah Oil & Gas Terminal (SOGT) in Kimanis which was originally scheduled to begin from 1 Aug to 7 August 2025 has been rescheduled to Aug 5 to 11 2025. Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) Chief Executive Officer Datuk Ir. Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid said this was decided in a joint meeting between ECoS, Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd and Grid System Operator on Wednesday. It is to enable completion of repair works on damaged units belonging to Sabah Electricity and Independent Power Producers, reliability testing of the Independent Power Producers operations in Kimanis using diesel fuel, and also the completion of additional Battery Energy Storage System capacity of 40MW. The rescheduling will be able to significantly reduce the impact of power supply rationing to consumers in Sabah should it be needed for the stability of the Sabah grid network, he added. 'The integrated maintenance work at SOGT together with offshore assets is a mandatory requirement to renew the Certificate of Fitness (CF) by the Department of Occupational Safety & Health (DOSH) to ensure that the assets involved always operate meeting the stipulated safety standards,' said Abdul Nasser in a statement. He said throughout this maintenance work, gas supply would be shut off to two Independent Power Plants namely Kimanis Power Plant and SPR Energy which will operate using diesel fuel. 'In addition, gas pipeline connection work for a new generation project currently being built by Sabah Electricity in Kimanis with a capacity of 100MW will also be implemented which can only be done during this gas supply shutdown.' He said with the completion of this project in the third quarter of 2025 together with other generation enhancement initiatives, it will be able to increase the Sabah Grid generation reserve margin from the current 17pc to 30pc. As a record, the reserve margin in 2023 was less than 10pc. This increase in reserve margin is very necessary to add resilience to the Sabah Grid in case of damage to several generation plants. Abdul Nasser said apart from efforts to increase generation capacity (supply side), electricity users can also play a role from the load demand aspect (demand side). 'The easiest method is to use electricity in an energy-efficient manner and electricity usage that can be done after peak hours, which is after 9pm.' It was earlier reported that load shedding operations will be carried out in Sabah and Labuan from Aug 1 to 7 due to scheduled maintenance work at the SOGT in Kimanis, which is expected to affect over 600,000 households. Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd CEO Datuk Mohd Yaakob Jaafar was reportedly said that the maintenance work by Petronas will affect more than 200,000 domestic user accounts in Sabah and Labuan. Yaakob said the process would also cause inconvenience to users in both regions, particularly during peak hours from 10 am to 10 pm, during which each area will face supply disruptions lasting one to two hours on a rotational basis. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? ES Sunlogy signs deal for special energy zone devt in Baram

Abang Zohari (centre) witnesses the heads of agreement exchange between ES Sunlogy and Planet QEOS on Monday. KUCHING (Aug 12): ES Sunlogy Bhd (ES Sunlogy), an established provider of mechanical and electrical (M&E) engineering services as well as generation and sale of renewable energy, has entered into a heads of agreement to support the development of a 155 megawatt-peak (MWp) solar hybrid power plant integrated with a 310 megawatt-hour (MWh) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Baram, Sarawak. Signed in partnership with Planet QEOS Sdn Bhd (Planet QEOS), the deal was witnessed by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Openg during the Public-Industry Engagement Day and Launching Ceremony of the Sarawak Energy Transition Policy (SET-P). This flagship initiative forms part of the broader Special Energy Zone (SEZ) launched by the Sarawak Government to accelerate the region's transformation into a clean energy and economic growth hub. ES Sunlogy managing director Khor Chuan Meng, commented, 'Sarawak has taken a visionary step by launching the Special Energy Zone in Baram. 'This initiative will serve as a catalyst for clean energy adoption, rural transformation, and local value creation. ES Sunlogy is honoured to be part of this mission, contributing not only through our renewable energy projects but by anchoring our core M&E expertise in the region. 'We are committed to working closely with the State Government and its agencies to support capacity building and regional infrastructure development in Baram.' Planet QEOS, a Sarawak-based deep technology company, recently received in-principle approval from the Sarawak State Government for its integrated agrovoltaic and renewable energy proposal in Baram, which includes the development of up to 4,000 MWac of solar capacity over a 1,200-hectare site. The initiative combines large-scale solar generation with food and agriculture infrastructure under a patented Sustainable Animal Feed Economics (SAFE) model to support both energy and food security. The Baram project also includes the construction of a dedicated 180-kilometre transmission corridor—repurposing the former Sabah-Sarawak Gas Pipeline—to deliver green energy from Baram to downstream industrial zones in Bintulu. This facility will serve as a regional hub for technical training, systems integration, and knowledge transfer, creating high-value jobs for local talent and upskilling the surrounding communities. The project also contributes to Phase 1 of the Baram DeepTech Energy Program, which aims to deliver 500 MWac of firm renewable energy into the SEB Grid by 2027, powered by 1,850 MWp of solar photovoltaic systems and 3,677 MWh of battery energy storage. This development is expected to form the world's largest single-site BESS-based solar power system, supporting fully dispatchable clean energy with a 60 per cent capacity factor. The Baram DeepTech program represents a critical component of Sarawak's broader plan to build a firm, reliable renewable energy supply equivalent to two Bakun Hydroelectric Plants by 2030. Additionally, ES Sunlogy will support the SEZ's integrated agrovoltaic ecosystem through the deployment of solar energy systems to power agricultural, logistics, and rural development zones within Baram. The SAFE agrovoltaic initiative is expected to generate thousands of employment opportunities in engineering, food production, and clean energy services, while enabling Sarawak to lead innovation in agri-energy convergence across Southeast Asia. By offering engineering and energy solutions tailored to Sarawak's unique geographic and demographic needs, the Group aligns itself with the State's objective to promote sustainable and equitable growth beyond urban centres. With a proven track record of delivering more than 13 projects with over 300MWp of solar capacity across Malaysia, ES Sunlogy plans to establish a dedicated regional presence in Sarawak to support local project execution, talent development, and long-term stakeholder engagement. In alignment with ESG principles, the Company will also incorporate low-carbon construction practices, promote local workforce participation, and provide solar electrification solutions to surrounding communities. MP on battery energy storage system: Why Sabah's cost RM300 million more?

Published on: Saturday, August 09, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 09, 2025 By: Abbey Junior Text Size: 'I heard that the Sabah BESS project costs RM650 million, while in the peninsula it's only RM300 million. The capacity is the same, the contractor is the same. So why is the cost so different?' Munirah asked. Kota Kinabalu: Kota Belud MP Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis has demanded transparency over the RM650 million Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Lahad Datu, questioning why it costs more than double a similar project in Peninsular Malaysia despite having the same capacity and contractor. Debating the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13) in Parliament, Munirah said she was shocked by the price gap and wants Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and Sabah Electricity to explain the justification behind the figures. Advertisement 'I heard that the Sabah BESS project costs RM650 million, while in the peninsula it's only RM300 million. The capacity is the same, the contractor is the same. So why is the cost so different?' she said. 'Is it true? If so, what is the technical and financial reasoning behind this decision? Sabahans deserve answers — this is public money we're talking about.' The BESS facility in Lahad Datu, located on Sabah's east coast, has been touted as one of Southeast Asia's largest energy storage systems, aimed at stabilising electricity supply in the region. However, Munirah said that strategic importance should not be used to mask questionable financial decisions. Advertisement She also criticised the RMK13 as unfair, saying it continues to sideline Sabah and Sarawak. 'Why not give half the budget to Borneo for once?' she asked. 'After 12 national plans, RMK13 still has no dedicated focus for Borneo. Not even one of the four strategic pillars mentions Sabah or Sarawak specifically. How long more are we expected to wait?' she asked. 'Would the country go bankrupt if, for once, half the national development budget was allocated to Sabah and Sarawak? Just for five years — what are we so afraid of?' Munirah said Sabah and Sarawak have for decades contributed to the national economy through oil and gas, and yet remain far behind in basic infrastructure, healthcare, education and income levels. 'We keep hearing about Borneo's potential, but the truth is we've already given so much. Now we need real political will to close the development gap.' On healthcare, Munirah said Sabah's system is already near breaking point, citing chronic staff shortages, poor facilities and delayed projects that continue to leave rural residents behind. 'What's happening to the new Kota Belud hospital? The Mantanani clinic? There's always some excuse or delay. People are suffering. Doctors are burning out. Nurses are overworked. And we're still waiting,' she said. She reminded Parliament that the doctor shortage in Sabah is not new and had existed long before the national conversation on contract doctors began. 'We've been warning about this for years. The pandemic only highlighted what we already knew — the gap between Sabah and the peninsula is massive.' On education, Munirah supported the RM67 billion allocation and the government's move to make preschool compulsory, but warned that throwing money at school buildings alone is not enough. 'Build schools with water, roads, electricity and internet. Otherwise, what are we really building? A classroom in the middle of nowhere that no one can reach?' she said. She also pushed back against federal planners who continue to use peninsula models like Sekinchan as the benchmark for rural development in Sabah. 'Sekinchan was developed with full planning. Kota Belud grew organically, village by village, generation by generation. Our irrigation systems must reflect that reality,' she said. Munirah called for pipe-based irrigation systems in hilly areas of Kota Belud and demanded immediate compensation for rice farmers in Piasau Sumpingon, who have been unable to plant paddy for seven consecutive seasons due to a poorly planned irrigation project. 'No one even consulted the farmers. The project disrupted their water supply, and now they can't earn a living. You can't postpone hunger. This is their only source of income, and it's been gone for years.' She said the government must not only compensate the affected farmers but also help them reopen fields that are now overgrown and unproductive. On fisheries, Munirah proposed turning Kota Belud into a deep-sea fish landing hub, using the old Ranko port and the Pan Borneo Highway for access — but said that potential is being blocked by the silted Sungai Abai estuary. 'I've raised this in Parliament over and over. The mouth of the river is too shallow. The upper stream is deeper than the estuary — and yet nothing is done,' she said. 'The fishermen are the ones suffering. Not the sand. Dredge the muara, not the hulu.' She also addressed the government's pledge to build one million affordable homes within 10 years but warned against sacrificing liveability for numbers. 'Don't let our people end up living in what feels like chicken cages. Set proper standards for home sizes. We don't want a Hong Kong-style housing crisis in Malaysia.' * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
