Olmo strikes early in second half to keep Barca's title charge on track
BARCELONA - Barcelona's Dani Olmo scored inside the first minute of the second half to earn a hard-fought 1-0 home win against Mallorca on Tuesday, extending their lead over Real Madrid at the top of the table to seven points with five games to go.
Barca dominated proceedings despite coach Hansi Flick deciding to rest several key starters ahead of Saturday's Copa del Rey final against bitter rivals Real, but Mallorca goalkeeper Leo Roman put on a show between the posts to keep them at bay.
Barca finally managed to break the deadlock shortly after the break thanks to a fine piece of individual skill from Olmo, who took the ball in a tight space inside the box and quickly fired a left foot shot into the bottom corner before Mallorca's defenders could challenge him.
The win lifted Barca to 76 points at the top of the LaLiga standings with Real, who visit Getafe on Wednesday, seven points adrift with a game in hand. REUTERS

Former All Blacks captain Stu Wilson dies aged 70

PHOTO: AFP Former All Blacks captain Stu Wilson died on Sunday at the age of 70, New Zealand Rugby (NZR) said. Wilson made his debut in 1976 and played in 34 Tests, scoring 19 Test tries and becoming the first wing to captain the All Blacks when he led the side in their tour of Scotland and England in 1983. He was also part of their 4-0 series win over the British and Irish Lions in New Zealand in 1983, scoring a hat-trick of tries in the fourth Test. Former All Blacks loose forward Murray Mexted said his former teammate 'lived life with a smile on his face'. 'We called him Super Stu because he was a super rugby player,' he told Radio New Zealand on Monday. 'He just seemed to slide through gaps effortlessly and he was so good at it that they moved him into centre at one stage.' Wilson also made 89 appearances for Wellington between 1975 and 1984, scoring 216 points. 'Beyond his playing career, Wilson remained an influential voice in the game, contributing as a commentator and advocate for rugby, always bringing insight and passion to his analysis,' the Wellington Rugby Football Union said in a statement. 'Stu Wilson's contribution to rugby in Wellington and New Zealand is immeasurable. He was more than just a world-class player; he was a proud ambassador for the sport, his province, and his country.' Premier League's first Black referee Rennie dies aged 65
Uriah Rennie, the first Black referee in the Premier League, has died aged 65, the Sheffield and Hallamshire County Football Association said on Sunday. Jamaican-born Rennie, who grew up in Sheffield, made history in 1997 when he refereed a Premier League match between Derby County and Wimbledon. He went on to officiate over 300 matches - including 175 games in England's top flight. "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former Chair and trailblazing referee, Uriah Rennie," the association said on social media. "Our thoughts are with Uriah's family and friends at this difficult time." Rennie retired in 2008 and it would be 15 years before another Black official took charge of a Premier League game, with Sam Allison officiating a match between Sheffield United and Luton Town in 2023. In April, Rennie told the BBC he was learning to walk again after being left paralysed from the waist down by a rare condition. "Incredibly sad to hear of the passing of referee Uriah Rennie. A pioneer, trailblazer and a bloody good ref," former England and Liverpool player Stan Collymore said on social media. "Rest in peace, Ref." Germany building something special, says Nagelsmann after defeat by France
Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann said his side are still trying to close the gap on the top teams in the world after their 2-0 Nations League defeat by France on Sunday but he was confident they are building something special. Goals from Kylian Mbappe and Michael Olise earned France the victory and third place in the Nations League. Nagelsmann saw improvement in his side from their 2-1 semi-final defeat by Portugal on Wednesday. "If we perform like we did today and don't take a step back against the teams in the World Cup qualifiers, then hopefully, we'll march through and prepare well," he told reporters. "Of course, we're still a few percentage points behind where we want to be, and behind the top teams in the world. We can't tear down the world in a year or two and make up for everything that may not have gone 100% right over several years. "Nevertheless, I sense something in the whole group, both the players and the staff, something special. There's a special touch and a lot of potential still in waiting." Germany, who last won the World Cup in 2014 and have been eliminated in the group stage in the past two editions, are in Group A of Europe's qualifiers for the 2026 tournament in North America. They begin their campaign in September against Slovakia in Bratislava. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
