Former captain Tim Paine appointed Australia 'A' coach

The Hindu20-06-2025
Former captain Tim Paine has been appointed coach of the Australia "A" team for this season with the country approaching a transition to a new generation of players as a handful of Test stalwarts near retirement.
Paine has worked in the media along with occasional roles with the Australia women's team and "A" programme since hanging up his bat in 2023 but will now give up his radio show to concentrate on his new job.
"It's time to spread my wings," Paine told listeners on SEN radio on Friday.
"I've been working with Australia 'A' as an assistant coach and the opportunity has come up for me to be the head coach. I feel like it's a hard balancing act to pursue a coaching career and talk in the media.
"The Australia 'A' programme is very exciting, there's a lot of young talent to work with. It's something I really enjoy doing. I'm very lucky and I'm really looking forward to the next part of my journey."
Starc, Hazlewood, Lyon, Smith approaching retirement
Australia could lose as many as half a dozen Test regulars to retirement after this year's Ashes series with the likes of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon, Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja all in their mid to late 30s.
Cricket Australia said Paine would continue to help out with the women's team as well as with his coaching role at the Adelaide Strikers Big Bash League team.
Paine took over as test captain in the wake of the Newlands ball-tampering affair in 2018 and led Australia to the retention of the Ashes in England in 2019, only to resign before the 2021-22 series after a sexting scandal.

Its Going To Be A Big Four Games...: Young Australia Batter Eyes Strong Sheffield Shield Start To Secure Ashes Spot

Australia's young batting talent Sam Konstas knows the coming months will be critical if he is to retain his Test spot for the Ashes, but the 19-year-old is intent on shutting out outside noise and focusing on the processes he trusts. Konstas endured a tough time in the recent West Indies series, managing just 50 runs in six innings in challenging conditions where both top orders struggled. Those matches were his first Tests since bursting onto the scene against India last season. With the Ashes on the horizon in November, the New South Wales batter finds himself back in the selection mix and aware of the stakes. 'It's massive, it's going to be a big four games and I expect that,' Konstas told ESPNcricinfo on the day he signed a new four-year deal with Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League, which keeps him at the club until 2029. 'But for me, [it's about] just being in the present moment, don't get too fixated about the outcome and just be very process-driven in those games. Not getting too fazed about what other people say, and obviously have that inner circle that I trust.' Konstas has resumed training with New South Wales after taking a short break post-tour and will feature in the four-day leg of the Australia A tour of India next month. While selectors view that trip with the long-term goal of Australia's five-Test series in India in 2027, Konstas knows his immediate focus is the early rounds of the Sheffield Shield. 'For me it's just trying to best prepare, and then obviously trusting what I think is right in that current moment,' he explained. 'It was my first time playing in the West Indies, and first time facing those bowlers. They bowled well and hopefully I can build from that experience. Adopting the right mindset, training hard, not leaving any regrets. For me, that's the big thing, just the way I prepare, and especially with the people that I trust, having honest conversations with them when necessary and leaving it to that.' NSW captain Jack Edwards, who will also tour India with Australia A, praised his teammate's attitude in recent weeks. 'He definitely doesn't hold onto it [the tour] for too long,' Edwards told ESPNcricinfo. 'It's great to have him around. He's working extremely hard at his game as he always does, hitting a mountain of balls…such a young man, he's definitely going to have a long career for Australia.' Konstas revealed he has leaned on senior figures including Steven Smith and David Warner—his captain at Sydney Thunder—for guidance. 'I'm very lucky to be working with the best in the world,' he said. Picked for Australia after just 11 first-class games, Konstas has been learning much of his trade at the highest level. The coaching staff believe his struggles in the Caribbean won't do long-term harm. Konstas himself remains focused on growth. 'I'm still learning about my game and finding what works in different conditions,' he said. 'Understanding the situations, when to soak up pressure [and] when to attack the game.' Warner, in particular, has been an important sounding board. 'I just like his mindset, to be honest,' Konstas said. 'He takes the game on and he's very aggressive. He's always trying to dictate terms in the way he likes to.' Still a teenager - he turns 20 in October - Konstas is trying to keep perspective amid the ups and downs of international cricket. 'As an athlete, you're going to go through failures and successes, but I tell you, build from those failures and become a better person and cricketer,' he reflected.

Sam Konstas eyes strong Sheffield Shield run to retain Ashes spot

Melbourne [Australia], August 19 (ANI): Sam Konstas knows he will need a massive run of performances in the early rounds of the Sheffield Shield if he is to hold on to his Test place for the upcoming Ashes. The young batter, however, is trying to block out the outside noise and rely on the advice of his close circle, as per had a tough outing in the recent series against West Indies, managing just 50 runs in six innings. While the conditions were difficult for both teams' top orders, it was still a disappointing return in what was his first Test series since making his debut against India last taking a short break following the West Indies tour, Konstas has resumed training with New South Wales. He is set to return to competitive action on the four-day leg of the Australia A tour of India next month. His real test will come in the domestic circuit when the Shield resumes in October.'It's massive, it's going to be a big four games and I expect that," Konstas said on the day a new four-year deal with Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League (BBL) was announced that will keep him at the club until 2029, as quoted from ESPNcricinfo.'But for me, (it's about) just being in the present moment, don't get too fixated about the outcome and just be very process-driven in those games. Not getting too fazed about what other people say, and obviously have that inner circle that I trust," he added.'For me it's just trying to best prepare, and then obviously trusting what I think is right in that current moment," Konstas noted. 'It was my first time playing in the West Indies, and first time facing those bowlers. For me, that's the big thing, just the way I prepare, and especially with the people that I trust, having honest conversations with them when necessary and leaving it to that," he been fast-tracked into the national side after just 11 first-class matches, Konstas has been learning much of his craft at the highest level. The Australian management believes that although the West Indies tour was a setback, it won't hinder his long-term progress. (ANI)

Australia all-rounder Webster ready to fight for his Test spot, welcomes pressure from fit-again Cam Green

Australia all-rounder Beau Webster said he is okay putting up a fight and the need to prove himself and his spot in the Test XI after getting direct competition from Cameron Green. The lanky all-rounder has welcomed the compounding pressure from Green for his No. 6 spot in the upcoming blockbuster Ashes series against England at home. Webster has had a decent start to his Test career, playing several crucial innings for Australia in a short span. He scored a vital half-century on his debut against India and led his team to a win at Sydney Cricket Ground, from which Australia sealed the five-match series 3-1. He also shone with the bat in the World Test Championship final against South Africa, where the defending champion had lost their WTC title to the Proteas. 'When you're at the top level, you're fighting to hang on to your spot with all the wonderful cricketers around the country, especially a guy like Cameron Green,' said Webster to Cricket Australia. 'He's (Green) obviously going to be back bowling this summer, which is going to put a bit more pressure on my spot at number six as the allrounder. But I welcome it. I feel like I've been in this position before a lot in my career where I've got to score runs to either go to the next level or stay in a team. So it's certainly not unfamiliar,' said Webster who has signed a three-year BBL deal with the Hobart Hurricanes. 'I'm looking forward to once again showing what I can do at Shield level, and hopefully be lining up in that that first Ashes Test in Perth. It's going to be a massive summer, and I'm sure the team's going change a little bit throughout those five Tests, and I'm just going to do everything I can to make sure I'm there for all five,' he added. Webster took the No.6 spot from Mitch Marsh, who had been preferred over Green as the team's all-rounder since midway through the 2023 Ashes. Marsh subsequently played in the same XI as Green and now selectors are weighing up whether dual all-rounders is a viable ploy against England this summer.
