GOF cracks down on illegal sawmills in Kelantan, seizes timber worth over RM19m
GOF Southeast Brigade Commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said the first seizure involved 33 bundles of timber, round logs, timber-processing equipment and a lorry at a sawmill near Jalan Bukit Kechik.
'Investigations found that the sawmill was operating without a licence from the Forestry Department, and the timber was untaxed. The 60-year-old owner and a 27-year-old lorry driver were detained, with the seized materials valued at RM10.98 million,' he said yesterday.
He said the case is being investigated under the National Forestry Act 1984 (Act 313) and has been referred to the Kelantan Forestry Department for further action.
In another raid, Nik Ros Azhan said they seized various types of timber after checking a sawmill in Kampung Bukit Pauh, valued at RM8.2 million. The seizure included 45 piles of processed wood, five piles of logs, timber-processing equipment, and a heavy machine.
'Further checks revealed that the sawmill had repeatedly reused the forest product transfer pass to evade detection by the authorities,' he said.
He added that the seized items were handed over to the Kelantan Forestry Department for further action, and the case is being investigated under Section 3(2) of the Wood-Based Industries Enactment 1985. — Bernama

Kelantan forestry to work with police to curb illegal logging
KOTA BARU: The Kelantan Forestry Department will strengthen its cooperation with the police to curb illegal logging and other forestry-related offences in the state. In a statement today, the department said the initiative would focus on joint operations, official information sharing and standardising procedures for evaluating seized items. "This approach is aimed at ensuring all information released is accurate and reliable, while preventing public confusion," it said today. The department also took the opportunity to clarify news reports dated Aug 17, which claimed that seized timber in Tanah Merah was worth RM13 million and RM19 million, respectively. "The figures were inaccurate and misleading. "The official valuation of seized timber is only determined by the department after technical assessment and documentation in line with departmental procedures. "The actual value of the seized timber is RM36,288.92, which is far lower than the amounts reported by the media," it said. The confiscated logs and sawn timber comprised various species and sizes, but the department stressed that the market value cited in media reports did not match its official records.

36 Myanmar illegal immigrants arrested in Rantau Panjang
PASIR MAS: A team from the 8th Battalion of the General Operations Force arrested thirty six illegal immigrants from Myanmar travelling in a chartered bus this morning. The operation occurred in Kampung Serongga near Rantau Panjang following a tip-off received at midnight. Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid confirmed the details to reporters. The bus was intercepted at 6.30am during a routine inspection. All thirty six passengers aged between twenty and forty were detained along with the thirty seven year old local driver who also owns the vehicle. 'Out of the 36, four held passports without valid entry stamps, one had an expired passport, and 31 had no identification documents,' he stated. Nik Ros Azhan revealed the immigrants were collected from a factory in Meru, Klang. They were being transported to Rantau Panjang under the false pretense of going to a non-existent rice mill. A payment of RM2,300 for the bus service was reportedly made by the employer via a cashless transaction. Two women were among those arrested in the operation. The suspects are being investigated under the Immigration Act 1959/63. The local driver faces charges under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007. He is suspected of being involved in human trafficking activities. 'All detainees have been taken to the Pasir Mas District Police Headquarters for further investigation,' added Nik Ros Azhan. They will subsequently be handed over to the Immigration Department for further processing. - Bernama

GOF nabs 36 undocumented Myanmar migrants in Rantau Panjang
RANTAU PANJANG: The General Operations Force (GOF) nabbed 36 undocumented migrants from Myanmar after stopping a tour bus in an operation in Serongga here today. Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abd Hamid said the Myanmar nationals were arrested about 6.30am following public tip-offs received around midnight. He said a GOF team from the Eighth Battalion, comprising one officer and seven personnel, stopped the bus and found 37 people onboard, including the 37-year-old Malaysian driver. The Myanmar nationals comprise 34 men and two women, aged 20s to 40s. Ros Azhan said the Myanmar nationals told GOF personnel that they were on their way to work at a rice factory in Kampung Tok Deh near the border. "Checks revealed that no such factory exists." He said only four of the Myanmar nationals had passports, but they were all empty and had no immigration stamps. "This indicates that the four did not enter Malaysia legally. After interrogation, they admitted to slipping into the country illegally several years ago." He said another Myanmar national had an expired passport, while the remaining 31 had no travel documents at all. Ros Azhan said the driver, who acted as a 'tekong' (agent), admitted to receiving RM2,300 to transport the Myanmar nationals from Meru, Klang, to Kelantan. "The driver claimed the group was picked up from a factory in Meru to be sent to Kelantan, supposedly to work in rice packing, involving 5kg and 10kg bags of Thai rice. "All of them were detained and handed over to Pasir Mas police for further action."
