Kyiv — Russian ballistic missiles and drones have been launched toward Ukraine from multiple directions, the Ukrainian Air Force said on Telegram Friday.
Fires caused by falling debris and drone strikes were reported in buildings across Kyiv, as Ukraine attempted to repel the Russian attack, the Head of Kyiv City Military Administration Tymur Tkachenko said. A CNN producer in the Kyiv region reported hearing at least two explosions.
Tkachenko accused Russia of hitting residential areas with the drone attack, saying a high-rise building the the Solomyansky district of Kyiv was damaged.
Kyiv's Mayor Vitali Klitschko also reported fires in the districts of Holosiivskyi and Darnytskyi of the Ukrainian capital.
Ukrainian air defense units have been activated in the Obolon area of Kyiv, Klitschko said on Telegram early Friday morning local time.
'The attack on the capital continues. Stay in shelters!' the mayor said.
The Russian missile attack on Ukraine comes days after Ukraine's security service launched a series of daring, large-scale drone attacks deep inside Russia, striking airfields and hitting 41 Russian military aircraft.
On Tuesday, Ukraine also launched an attack on the Kerch Bridge, the only direct connection point between Russia and the annexed Crimean Peninsula, with 1,100 kilograms of explosives that had been planted underwater.

Canada's top soldier joins NATO talks on how allies secure Ukraine under a peace deal

Chief of Defence Staff General Jennie Carignan gestures during an interview in Calgary, Saturday, July 5, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Jeff McIntosh OTTAWA — The head of Canada's military is speaking with other top soldiers across the NATO alliance today seeking options for upholding peace in Ukraine if a ceasefire comes into force. Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Jennie Carignan is among those who were invited by her Italian counterpart for a virtual discussion with the top soldiers of 32 countries. A military spokesman said the discussion included an update on the situation in Ukraine and what countries might be able to contribute. The military says Canada welcomes 'the willingness of the U.S. to provide security guarantees to Ukraine,' saying these are essential to a durable peace agreement. The call follows discussions that Prime Minister Mark Carney has had with leaders from NATO countries as well as Japan and Australia on how to support peace in Ukraine. U.S. President Donald Trump is trying to broker a deal between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, though analysts fear a deal that rewards Moscow for its 2014 and 2022 invasions. Pope Leo sets day of fasting, prayers for peace on Friday

Pope Leo XIV waves as he arrives for his weekly general audience, at The Vatican, Wednesday, Aug.20, 2025. (AP Photo/Gregorio Borgia) VATICAN CITY -- Pope Leo has asked Catholics and other religious faithful to observe a day of fasting and prayers for peace in the Middle East, Ukraine and other war-torn areas of the world on Friday, August 22. 'As our Earth continues to be wounded by wars in the Holy Land, in Ukraine, and in many other regions ... I invite all the faithful to live the day of August 22 in fasting and prayer,' the pontiff said during his weekly audience at the Vatican on Wednesday. Leo suggested the faithful could ask God to 'grant us peace and justice and to wipe away the tears of those who suffer because of the ongoing armed conflicts.' Leo, the first U.S. pope, was elected by the world's Catholic cardinals on May 8 to replace the late Pope Francis. He has made several appeals to end the war in Ukraine during the first months of his papacy, and his first known phone call with a foreign leader in May was to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who the pope also met in person in July. Catholics have a practice of fasting on or before important spiritual holidays as a way of coming closer to God in prayer. Francis had previously called a special day of fasting and prayer last October, on the one-year anniversary of the Israel-Hamas war. Reporting by Joshua McElwee, editing by Gavin Jones, Reuters
