Coventry concert celebrates man's 50 years of composing music

BBC News11-03-2025
A concert will celebrate a Coventry music teacher's 50 years of composing in the city.Robert Ramskill from Finham has arranged and composed music for Songs of Praise, Aled Jones, and Russell Watson, as well as lots of local music groups. This includes approximately 200-300 arrangements for Songs of Praise."The great thing about writing for Songs of Praise you always know professional instrumentalists are going to play the parts you've written, and will play them perfectly, so the satisfaction in that is great," Mr Ramskill said.
Mr Ramskill moved to Coventry from Leeds in 1975, when he got a job at the Coventry School of Music, which eventually became a centre for performing arts before joining Coventry University. The composer built up his body of work through his teaching."Part of it is because I had to write music for the students sometimes," he told BBC CWR."You have a group of instruments, well there's no music actually been written for that particular group so you set about writing or arranging something."In Coventry in the 70s and 80s and early 90s there were lots of youth orchestras and bands and choirs and they were always looking for new music, so I was always happy to supply and develop my style based on that."He joked: "I must apologise to my wife and family for spending so long in the study composing."
'It was a big deal'
It was a surprising turn of events that led to him composing for Songs of Praise.Mr Ramskill had been asked to write an arrangement of The Teddy Bear's Picnic for the Coventry Youth Orchestra in 1989, by conductor Brian Chappell."He said I want you to go to town and make it a big deal," Mr Ramskill said."It was an elaborate arrangement with references to all kinds of different music. Wham got in there somehow. So it was a big deal."Songs of Praise conductor Paul Leddington Wright was in the audience at one of the performances, as his two daughters played in the orchestra, and asked Mr Ramskill if he wanted to compose for the programme.Reflecting on why Songs of Praise kept asking him to compose more arrangements, Mr Ramskill said: "Because I didn't have a church background I think they liked that I had a slightly novel approach to arranging hymns."The concert will take place at Drapers' Hall on 23 March at 14:00 GMT.

Only Men Aloud announce Monmouth and Cwmbran tour dates

The Welsh vocal group, who gained national fame after winning the BBC One competition Last Choir Standing in 2008, will perform at the Congress Theatre in Cwmbran on November 26 and the Savoy Theatre in Monmouth on November 29. The extended tour celebrates a quarter-century of performances that have taken the group from BBC's Songs of Praise to the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games and two Royal Variety Performances. Craig Yates, an original member of Only Men Aloud and now creative director of the Aloud Charity, said: "This is a celebration tour. "We've had a wonderful time with OMA, which has really evolved over the last 25 years." The group was founded in 2000 by Tim Rhys-Evans, who is now director of music at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. Originally a 25-member male voice choir, Only Men Aloud now performs as an eight-piece ensemble, with members balancing the group alongside careers in pharmacy, teaching, gardening, music, and musical theatre. Their breakthrough came in 2008 when they won Last Choir Standing, catapulting them to national recognition and a series of high-profile performances, including supporting Diana Ross at Cardiff Castle. Mr Yates said: "We're all adults now, with the range of family responsibilities which come with that. "We've all got jobs and OMA is a hobby – but what a hobby to have." Fans can expect an evening of stories, choral arrangements, and energetic adaptations during the anniversary tour. The tour will begin in Cardiff on September 27 at the New Theatre, where Only Boys Aloud will join them on stage. Other tour dates include Aberystwyth, Swansea, Llandudno, Llandrindod Wells, and Newtown. The group last performed an intimate five-date show last Christmas, but Mr Yates said this run is about more than just returning to the stage. He said: "It's been amazing and we are thankful that people still really enjoy listening to and seeing us. "It's lovely to be back." Tickets are available now through the Only Men Aloud website.

Stranger Things actor announces engagement to longtime partner

Stranger Things star Mason Dye has revealed that he secretly proposed to his girlfriend, Carmen Joiner. The actor, 31, is best known for starring in the hit Netflix sci-fi series as Jason Carver, Chrissy Cunningham's (Grace Van Dien) boyfriend, who became convinced Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn) killed her during the fourth season of the show. After four years of dating, Joiner said he had popped the question, and they planned to tie the knot on June 7 next year to mark their fifth anniversary. 'Valentine's Day felt way too obvious, so it completely went over my head,' She recalled. 'He had the whole evening planned, including fake dinner reservations at one of our favorite restaurants to throw me off.' After the proposal, Joiner said her beau surprised her with a star at North Georgia's Chateau Elan, where they celebrated together before returning home to yet another shock. She continued to People: 'When we got home, our family, friends, and our cat Willow were waiting with a party to celebrate! Mason's parents added to the surprise and even drove in from Oklahoma to make everything that much more special.' Wedding planning is well underway, with the lovebirds set to tie the knot at Wychmere Beach Club in Cape Cod, MA. 'When we started planning the wedding, we knew we wanted a destination in a fun place since our friends and family were from all over the states,' she said. 'We also wanted something that felt coastal and romantic, something on the water, and somewhere all of our friends and family would be excited to visit. Cape Cod checked all the boxes.' It comes ahead of the fifth and final series of Stranger Things, which is set to begin on the streamer on November 26. Dye presumably won't be returning to the series for its grand finale, seeing as his character was killed off in season four. Akers) Linda Hamilton (Dr. Kay) An official plot synopsis reads: 'The fall of 1987. Hawkins is scarred by the opening of the Rifts, and our heroes are united by a single goal: find and kill Vecna. But he has vanished — his whereabouts and plans unknown. 'Complicating their mission, the government has placed the town under military quarantine and intensified its hunt for Eleven, forcing her back into hiding. 'As the anniversary of Will's disappearance approaches, so does a heavy, familiar dread. 'The final battle is looming — and with it, a darkness more powerful and more deadly than anything they've faced before. To end this nightmare, they'll need everyone — the full party — standing together, one last time.' Familiar Hawkins faces that will feature in the new episodes include Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, and Sadie Sink. Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, and Maya Hawke also reprise their roles. More Trending At the end of season four, Max's (Sink) life was left hanging in the balance, comatose in a hospital after being attacked by Vecna (Jamie Campbell-Bower). Things also didn't look good as Vecna's plan came to fruition, and the Upside Down was unleashed onto Hawkins. The season ended with an earthquake that tore the town apart, and the Upside Down leaked into Hawkins. The series is set to be released in November, with more episodes expected to be staggered in their release and follow in the weeks after. The first of the three releases will be on November 26, with the second taking place on December 25, and the final episodes released on December 31.
