Four Kanwariyas killed in MP, CM announces Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia for families of deceased
The pilgrims, part of a 13-member group returning from Bhadavna after collecting holy water for Jalabhishek, were walking along the roadside when a speeding car lost control and rammed into them.
According to preliminary police reports, the accident occurred around 1 a.m. when the car's tyre burst, causing it to veer off the Shivpuri Link Road and crush the devotees before overturning into roadside bushes.
The term "Kanwariya" refers to a devotee who participates in the Kanwar Yatra, a pilgrimage undertaken by followers of Lord Shiva.
The word is derived from "Kanwar" or "Kavad," a bamboo pole with two pots attached, which the devotees carry on their shoulders to fetch holy water from the Ganges or other sacred sources.
"Three Kanwariyas died on the spot, while one succumbed to injuries at Jaya Arogya Hospital (JAH). Two others remain in critical condition," police officials said.
A total of six persons were hit by the car - three died on the spot, one died in hospital during treatment, and the remaining two are currently undergoing treatment, with their condition reported as critical.
In a statement posted on his X handle, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed deep sorrow over the loss and announced Rs 4 lakh in financial assistance to the next of kin of each deceased.
"I pray to Baba Mahakal to grant peace to the departed souls and strength to the bereaved families," the message read.
City Superintendent of Police Heena Khan confirmed that the vehicle was found abandoned at the scene, with no occupants inside.
Authorities have identified the car's owner and are actively searching for those who were inside at the time of the crash.
The deceased have been identified as residents of Simaria Panchayat, Ghatigaon, with three belonging to the same family.
The group had been walking back to their village, located about 35 km from the accident site, when tragedy struck.
Emergency teams from Kampu, Janakganj, Jhansi Road, and Madhoganj police stations responded swiftly, pulling victims from a roadside ditch and transporting them to the trauma centre.
The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the ongoing Kanwar Yatra, a sacred pilgrimage observed during the holy Shravan month.
The accident has reignited concerns about road safety during religious processions, especially on high-speed highways.
Police presence has been increased in the area to maintain order and prevent further incidents.

Police in Andhra Pradesh's Kakinada district have arrested the main accused in the murder of a woman and her two daughters in Samarlakota. The accused, Suresh, allegedly killed them after a fallout in his two-year extramarital relationship with the victims, 26-year-old Mulpurti Madhuri and her daughters, aged 8 and 6, were found dead inside their home in Seetharam Colony on August 3. She also allegedly asked him to buy her a gold-plated washing machine. After a physical encounter, Suresh attacked her with a wooden rod and killed her. He then allegedly killed the children, fearing they had seen took Madhuri's gold ornaments and two mobile phones from the house, hoping to make the crime look like a robbery. But police ruled out theft and arrested him based on further Bindu Madhav confirmed Suresh's arrest and said a detailed chargesheet is being prepared. UP: 2 criminals wanted in murder of journalist killed in encounter
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Sitapur (UP), Aug 7 (PTI) Two brothers wanted in the murder of a journalist, among other crimes, were killed in an encounter with a joint team of the Special Task Force (STF) and the local police here on Thursday, officials said. However, the late journalist's wife slammed the encounter and called for a CBI probe into the matter. 'We are dissatisfied with today's encounter and the police work. Everything revealed by the police was fabricated; we have never been satisfied with it," she said. Police received intelligence inputs suggesting the two criminals, wanted in the murder case of journalist Raghvendra Bajpai, were planning to cross the Hardoi-Sitapur border, Superintendent of Police (SP) Ankur Agarwal said in a statement. Acting on the tip-off, a joint team of the STF and the Sitapur Police launched combing operations in the Pisawan Police Station area and spotted the two accused, Raju Tiwari alias Rizwan Khan and Sanjay Tiwari alias Aqueel Khan, on a motorcycle, the officer noted. When asked to stop, the duo allegedly opened fire at the police team. In retaliatory firing, the two were killed, Additional Director General (Law and Order) Amitabh Yash said. Earlier, a reward of Rs 1 lakh each had been announced for their arrests. Bajpai (36), a resident of Vikasnagar in the Maholi area, was shot dead on March 8 near the Hempur railway overbridge on the Lucknow-Delhi National Highway while he was heading to Sitapur on a motorcycle. Listing the history of the criminals, the police said that Raju killed Sub-Inspector Parvez Ali in Lakhimpur in 2006 and looted his service pistol. Sanjay killed a woman in Sitapur in 2011. Expressing her dissatisfaction over the encounter, Bajpai's wife Rashmi Bajpai said, 'We have been demanding a CBI inquiry from the beginning, but it has not taken place because it would have revealed the identities of those involved in my husband's murder. We received no information about the encounter that occurred today. This is how justice is served." Rashmi asserted that she will go to Delhi to demand a CBI inquiry into the matter. SC relists case in which it barred HC judge from hearing criminal cases
Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 7 (PTI) Days after the Supreme Court pulled up an Allahabad High Court judge for allowing criminal proceedings in a civil dispute case, the Supreme Court relisted the matter for August 8. In an unprecedented order, a bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and R Mahadevan on August 4 stripped criminal matters of the roster of a Allahabad High Court judge 'till he demits office" after he 'erroneously" upheld summons of criminal nature in a civil dispute. According to the top court's causelist, the matter would be heard by the same bench. According to sources, senior judges in the apex court have taken strong exception to the bench's order and even Chief Justice of India B R Gavai was consulted in the matter. The high court judge had refused to quash a magistrate's summoning order against a company which was accused of not paying the balance monetary sum in a business transaction of civil nature. Justices Pardiwala and Mahadevan on August 4 directed removal of criminal matters from the high court judge's roster till his retirement while tasking him to sit with a senior judge in a division bench. The high court judge's order said asking the complainant to pursue civil remedy for recovering the amount was unreasonable being time intensive. Calling the order passed by the high court judge 'erroneous", the top court said the judge went ahead to the extent of saying that the complainant should be permitted to institute criminal proceedings for the purpose of recovery of the balance amount. The top court said the high court order was one of the 'worst and most erroneous" orders that it came across in their respective tenures as judges of the top court. 'The judge concerned has not only cut a sorry figure for himself but has made a mockery of justice. We are at our wits' end to understand what is wrong with the Indian Judiciary at the level of High Court. At times we are left wondering whether such orders are passed on some extraneous considerations or it is sheer ignorance of law. Whatever it be, passing of such absurd and erroneous orders is something unpardonable," the bench said. The top court was hearing a challenge to high court's order which dismissed an application filed by one M/S Shikhar Chemicals seeking to quash summoning order in a case of commercial transaction. In this case, the complainant (Lalita Textiles) delivered goods in the form of thread to Shikhar Chemicals worth Rs 52.34 lakh of which an amount of Rs 47.75 lakh came to be paid, however, the balance amount has not been paid, till date. Lalita Textiles filed a criminal complaint for the recovery of the balance amount. Thereafter, the complainant's statement was recorded and a magisterial court issued summons against the applicant. The company moved the high court against the order, contending the dispute was purely civil in nature. The high court, however, rejected the plea of the applicant. On August 4, the top court observed it was expected of the high court to know the well-settled position of law that in cases of civil disputes a complainant cannot be permitted to resort to criminal proceedings as the same would amount to abuse of process of law. Terming the high court's take on the issue as 'shocking", the bench said, 'It is an extremely sad day for one and all to read the observations contained in para 12 of the impugned order." The order continued, 'It was expected of the high court to understand the nature of the allegations levelled in the complaint. In substance the high court has said in so many words that the criminal proceedings instituted by the complainant in a case of pure civil dispute is justified because it may take considerable time for the complainant to recover the balance amount by preferring a civil suit." The bench said in such circumstances it was left with no other option but to set aside the high court order even without issuing notice to the respondents. 'We request the the Chief Justice of the High Court of Allahabad to assign this matter to any other Judge of the High Court as he may deem fit. The Chief Justice of High Court shall immediately withdraw the present criminal determination from the concerned Judge. The Chief Justice shall make the concerned judge sit in a Division Bench with a seasoned senior judge of the High Court (sic)," the top court said.
