A new action-thriller movie just crashed the Netflix top 10 — but there's a problem
A new military action-thriller has stormed into the Netflix U.S. charts, mere months after its digital debut.
The movie in question is "Sniper: The Last Stand", the 11th installment in the long-running "Sniper" franchise of military action movies.

Danishka Esterhazy's "Sniper: The Last Stand" sees ace sniper Brandon Beckett (Chad Michael Collins) and Agent Zero (Ryan Robbins) heading to Costa Verde for a dangerous new mission.
The task? To prevent an arms dealer (Arnold Vosloo) from unleashing a deadly superweapon. Together, the pair lead a group of elite soldiers against, and Brandon faces a new challenge when he's tasked with taking an untested rookie sniper with 0 confirmed kills under his wing.

If you guessed "Sniper: The Last Stand" would be another passable-at-best Netflix action movie, you'd be right.
I wouldn't want to rag too hard on something that's obviously a lower-budget effort, but the problem here is simply that I can't seriously recommend "Sniper: The Last Stand."
A lot of the acting oscillates between wooden and over-the-top; neither our main man nor the firefights themselves are all that interesting to watch, the dialogue falls pretty flat, and the characters couldn't be much blander if they tried.
It at least moves at a reasonable pace, and some of the hand-to-hand brawls are staged better than the shootouts. On the whole, though? It's just not that thrilling. And as an action movie chiefly designed to keep you on the edge of your seat, that's a problem.
Given the calibre of some of the high-octane watches that are streaming on Netflix, I wouldn't say I recommend making time to watch "Sniper: The Last Stand." Frankly, you can find better adrenaline-pumping action flicks on the streamer than this.

The movie hasn't received much critical attention yet, so it doesn't have a rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but elsewhere, it's garnered pretty average ratings from other viewers, too.
On IMDB, it's currently sitting at a 4.6/10, and it's got an average score of 2.9/5 on Letterboxd. In other words? Not the worst scores in the world, but it's equally not putting "Sniper: The Last Stand" in must-watch territory, either.
If you do just want to indulge in a bit of mindless, militarized action, the back half will serve you well, and you might want to stream "Sniper: The Last Stand" on Netflix now.

Gabrielle Nevaeh: New 'Stranger Things' heroine Patty Newby relates to lonely Creel
NEW YORK, June 8 (UPI) -- Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, Monster High, That Girl Lay Lay and All That actress Gabrielle Nevaeh says starring in Broadway's Stranger Things prequel, The First Shadow, helped her check two things off her professional wish list. "This is the first time that I ever got truly emotional when I heard that I got a job because I just never dreamed that i could ever be a part of the Stranger Things universe or be on Broadway, and I somehow got the best of all worlds," Nevaeh told UPI in a recent phone interview. "I figured that maybe the Duffer Brothers would see my audition and consider me for something else, but certainly not Stranger Things: The First Shadow. The blockbuster play follows the teen versions of Joyce (Alison Jaye), Hopper (Burke Swanson) and Bob Newby (Juan Carlos) -- beloved adult characters from the Netflix series -- 30 years before the denizens of Hawkins, Ind., learn a shadowy government agency is trying to weaponize some kids' supernatural powers. In the stage drama -- which goes into Sunday's Tony Awards ceremony with five nominations -- Nevaeh plays a new Hawkins heroine, Patty Newby. Patty is the adopted sister of Bob, who will eventually grow up to be the kind-hearted Radio Shack worker (played by Sean Astin) who dies selflessly protecting Winona Ryder's version of Joyce from Demo-Dogs in Season 2 of the sci-fi series. "She's a warrior. Patty has had a really hard life," Nevaeh said. "She doesn't have anyone," she added. "Bob's at the age where he's obsessed with Joyce. Her dad doesn't like her. She doesn't have a mom. She doesn't have friends, so she is a loner. She's alone, but she is an optimist and she tries to make the best out of her situation." These are some of the reasons why she reaches out to standoffish Henry Creel (Tony-nominated Louis McCartney), a troubled outsider who arrives in town with his family. Viewers of the Netflix show are wary of Henry, however, knowing he will eventually kill his family and become the powerful villain Vecna (played in the series by Jamie Campbell Bower). He is only starting to understand his abilities in the play. "We get to see her nobility really shine through her relationship with Henry Creel who we know is Vecna and we get to see her heroism and the goodness that can be found in the darkest moments," Nevaeh said. "When I was developing Patty, [I thought], it's so easy for it to be the 'I can fix him story,' and it's also easy for Patty to take the route of, 'OK, I give up,' especially when she finds out that Henry truly is not normal." What was most interesting to Nevaeh to explore was how the teen misfits truly connect about the bad parts of their lives. "Patty sees Henry in a way that nobody else does and Henry sees Patty in a way that no one else does and they kind of need each other because there's no one else like them," Nevaeh said. "No one else can relate to their situation. No one else knows what it's like to be rejected by every piece of your life. Patty tries to give Henry a sense of belonging and Henry is the first person to ever see Patty and accept her for who she is." Both the stage production and TV show strive to authentically recreate the atmosphere of a small town in their respective eras. "The television series does an excellent job of showcasing things that were happening in the 1980s, whether it was politically, socially, economically," Nevaeh said. "We do a great job with Stranger Things: The First Shadow of touching on 1959," she added. "We don't necessarily go deep into it, but the undercurrent of the story is a little bi-racial girl falling in love with a little White boy in the 1950s and what does that look like? We can explore those tensions through a few of the other characters and really highlight the romance of the time that was 1959." In addition to enjoying nightly standing ovations, cast members of the play also find crowds of adoring fans outside the theater stage door waiting for them. "It's been absolutely incredible," Nevaeh said. "Lots of kids are coming now because it's summer time, but I have quite a few people who have come to see the show because they knew me from my time on Nickelodeon, which is a beautiful arc for me to have grown up being a child star and then doing something as important and profound as Stranger Things: The First Shadow and seeing those fans carry over. "It's just mind-blowing," she added. "I'm eternally grateful for the incredible response that we've been having." ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — When spotlighting the most prominent Rochesterians — it's easy to quickly showcase Foreigner's lead singer Lou Gramm, abolitionist Frederick Douglass, and inventor George Eastman. Did you know these celebrities were born and raised right here in the Flower City? Known for providing the voice of Phineas Flynn on the Disney Channel animated series 'Phineas and Ferb' and playing the role of Chris Rock's best friend 'Greg' on 'Everybody Hates Chris,' Vincent Martella was born in Rochester before moving to central Florida during his childhood — according to the star's IMDB page. But the Martella family has stayed in the area — Captain Tony's Pizza & Pasta Emporium has been serving guests for more than 45 years, after Martella's relative Antonio opened in 1972. Vincent stopped by the pizza shop in 2017 for a special meet and greet before emceeing the Special Olympics that year. A new season of 'Phineas and Ferb' premiered on Disney+ on June 5. Did you know these movies were filmed around Rochester? His heart is a stereo — that was born and raised just 45 minutes from Rochester. Travie McCoy, co-founder and lead vocalist of the group 'Gym Class Heroes' was born in Geneva in 1981. McCoy formed the group with his friend, Matt McGinley, who he met in ninth grade at a Geneva High School. Gym Class Heroes has had top 20 albums on the Billboard 200 chart, and hit singles 'Cupid's Chokehold,' 'Stereo Hearts' with Maroon 5's Adam Levine and 'The Fighter' with OneRepublic's front man Ryan Tedder. McCoy was inducted into the Rochester Music Hall of Fame in April 2025. One of YouTube's first stars, Jenna Mourey — better known as Jenna Marbles — grew up in Rochester, New York and attended Brighton High School. Marbles' YouTube channel accumulated nearly 2 billion views, and 20 million subscribers at its peak. Marbles announced an indefinite hiatus on her YouTube account in 2020. Not born in Rochester, but spending a majority of his early years here, Gene Cornish is an original member of the popular 1960s group 'The Young Rascals.' The band recorded eight albums within five years, and had thirteen singles that reached Billboard's Top 40 chart. Cornish was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a founding member of The Rascals in 1997. Dubbed the greatest actor of the 21st century in 2014, Philip Seymour Hoffman was born to Rochester's nearby town — Fairport — in 1967. Hoffman attended Fairport High School, and before walking the stage, was accepted to New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. Hoffman won an Academy Award for 'Best Actor' in recognition of playing the role of author Truman Capote in 'Capote.' Other notable titles for Hoffman include 'Magnolia,' 'Charlie Wilson's War,' and 'The Master.' He died in 2014. 'Live from New York' comes naturally to the 'Saturday Night Live' star, since she was born near Rochester in Canandaigua in 1973! Kristen Wiig had a seven-season tenure on the hit TV show from 2005 to 2012, where she received four nominations for Primetime Emmy awards. Time Magazine named Wiig as one of the 100 most influential people in the world twice — in 2012 and 2025. After moving to Pennsylvania at the age of three, Wiig and her family returned to Rochester where she went to school at Allendale Columbia School and graduated from Brighton High School. Wiig's family has even closer ties as well. Wiig's paternal grandfather was a formed executive here at WROC-TV! Her mother ran a lake marina in Western New York, as well.
