CARPENTERSVILLE, Ill. - A 19-year-old man and juvenile have been charged—and may face hate crime counts—after a woman was seriously injured in an alleged anti-LGBTQ+ attack at a McDonald's in Carpentersville, authorities said.
What we know
John Z. Kammrad is charged with two counts of aggravated battery and one count of mob action, according to the Kane County State's Attorney's Office.
A second suspect, a juvenile, who has not been identified, is also facing charges related to the incident.
Kammrad was arrested on May 17. The juvenile turned himself in a day earlier, on May 16.
The backstory
The altercation occurred on Tuesday, May 13, at the McDonald's located at 1660 South Kennedy Drive.
Carpentersville police said the two suspects made derogatory comments about the woman's sexual orientation as they passed her, sparking a confrontation that escalated into a physical fight.
The woman, identified in a GoFundMe as Kady Grass, sustained serious injuries and was taken to a hospital.
What they're saying
Kane County State's Attorney Jamie Mosser said in a statement her office is reviewing the case to determine whether additional charges, including a hate crime, are warranted.
"I want to assure the public that my office is conducting a thorough and unbiased review of this case to determine if adding additional charges such as Hate Crime is appropriate. The Carpentersville Police Department is continuing its investigation, and we are actively reviewing all evidence to determine whether additional charges are warranted. I have been in direct contact with the police department and my office has been in contact with the victim. I am committed to pursuing justice based on the full facts of the case.
"The allegations involved here are deeply disturbing. My thoughts are with Kady Grass and her family, and I want her to know we will do everything within the law to hold those responsible accountable. Kane County is a welcoming community, and there is no place in a civilized society for the alleged behavior in this case."
The investigation remains ongoing.

Service dog reunited with blind owner two months after being stolen from Chicago backyard

A loyal service dog has been reunited with its owner nearly three months after being stolen from a backyard in Chicago, officials say. Bam Bam, the 14-year-old tan and white Dachshund, was stolen from the yard in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago on June 5, according to a GoFundMe created to help find him. His owner, Angel Santiago, who is legally blind due to glaucoma, spent days walking miles and handing out flyers with the hope of finding his beloved friend and aid. Santiago told police that two unknown people entered through his gate and took the canine. Although he heard the disturbance and even grabbed one of the suspects in an attempt to stop him, the men were able to get away with Bam Bam. He believes the suspect he grabbed sounded like a teenager. Santiago said that he could hear Bam Bam barking as the men ran away with him. 'Let your eyes be mine and look out for Bam Bam for me, please. I beg of you to help me,' he wrote in a desperate plea on the fundraiser. The GoFundMe totalled almost $20,000 as concerned citizens looked to support the cause. A Facebook Page set up for the search effort led several flyer events, petitions, and meetups in the city to help find the dog. On August 12, a post read: 'We are incredibly grateful to be working with an amazing group of volunteers who are organizing walking routes and flyering to reach local residents who may not have heard Angel and Bam Bam's story.| Thankfully, after nearly three months of desperate searching, Bam Bam was found. On Tuesday evening, Chicago police said an unidentified man and woman dropped off a white-and-yellow dachshund mix at the 16th District police station. Police quickly confirmed the animal to be Bam Bam. Santiago, who is both blind and has Type 2 diabetes, rushed to the station to be reunited with Bam Bam, say police. The dog was reportedly in good health when it was recovered, police said. As it stands, no arrests have been made. A team of detectives is continuing to investigate the circumstances of how the dog ended up at the station. The pair who dropped off Bam Bam refused to hand over any information to the police before leaving, according to authorities.

Bam Bam, the stolen service dog, reunited with his Logan Square owner; ‘I prayed every day and night'

Bam Bam is home. The 14-year-old Dachshund captured the hearts and minds around the globe after he'd been reported stolen in June from his Logan Square owner, Angel Santiago. Santiago is legally blind due to glaucoma and relied on Bam Bam as a service dog. The pair was reunited Tuesday night, police said, after a man and woman dropped Bam Bam off at Chicago Police's 16th District station. Officers said the dog appeared in good health. Detectives are still investigating the theft, and no one is in custody. Santiago told the Tribune Wednesday he thanked God for being reunited with his beloved Bam Bam. 'I prayed every day and night,' he said. Bam Bam was reportedly stolen from Santiago's yard on June 5, according to a GoFundMe created to help raise funds for Bam Bam's search. The news of the theft went viral on social media, and Santiago told the Tribune he'd received calls of support from as far away as Spain and New Zealand. Santiago walked several miles a day looking for his dog. 'No matter how many times I fall … I always get up,' Santiago said, kissing Bam Bam on the neck.

Veronika Rodriguez sentenced to jail time for wiretapping, false police report conviction

A judge ruled that Veronika Rodriguez will serve minimal time in jail for illegal wiretapping and filing a false report with police after she reported an alleged rape in 2023. Lebanon County Court of Common Pleas Judge Charles Jones Jr. sentenced the Middletown airman to 30 days in jail after she was found guilty on May 23 of intercept communications, disclose intercepted communications, and giving false information to a law enforcement officer. On Jan. 11, 2023, Rodriguez went to Fort Indiantown Gap Police Department to report a sexual assault she alleged happened on Jan. 8, 2023 involving Fahad Pervez. Rodriguez told police that she and Pervez had non-consensual sex while in his vehicle in the parking lot of the Keystone Conference Center, and that she recorded parts of the incident on her phone. Pervez was never formally charged in the alleged incident. According to Pennsylvania's wiretap act, it is illegal to record private conversations, which can include conversations in public places, without the consent of all parties to the conversation. An exception to the act is when someone is under a reasonable suspicion that they are recording a crime of violence, which includes rape. On Jan. 8, 2023, officers discovered an occupied vehicle in the parking lot of the Keystone Conference Center after hours. According to court documents, police contacted the occupants, identified as Rodriguez and Pervez, who were in the rear seat of the vehicle. Fort Indiantown Gap police then placed the incident in a police blotter, saying that Pervez, then a major, and Rodriguez, then an airman from the 193rd Squadron, were involved in an incident with police. On Jan. 10, 2023, Rodriguez was contacted by her first sergeant to provide a statement on the encounter. During a media event May 30, Lebanon County District Attorney Pier Hess Graf said Rodriguez lied about being the victim of sexual assault, and misrepresented a recording of a date and sexual encounter with Pervez in 2023. "Whatever her true motivation was, whether it was simply to get out of a reprimand for fraternization or whether it would get her more attention ... what she has done here has undermined the work of true sexual assault trauma survivors," Graf said after the conviction. "It is disgusting." Prosecutors played the 55-minute audio recording made by Rodriguez of the alleged sexual assault on Jan. 11, 2023 for the jury during her trial in May. The DA's office at trial also submitted evidence that Rodriguez attempted to delete the entire recording from her phone, and played select clips for law enforcement while they were conducting their investigation. Rodriguez has raised more than $21,238 on GoFundMe because of the January 2023 incident, with organizers saying that the funds will be going to support her appeal and "cover the crushing debt she has accrued during this two-year battle." "Evidence in this case was manipulated, minimized or flat-out ignored," organizers said on the GoFundMe page. "Veronika had audio recordings that captured her screaming 'NO' repeatedly. These were not vague or subtle, every person in that courtroom heard her voice. Yet somehow, justice was not served." When asked about an appeal after her trial in May, Rodriguez's attorney, Ian Ehrgood, said all of the options were on the table. This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
