Sparks head coach fumes after another sex toy is thrown on WNBA court in game against Fever: ‘It's stupid'
The WNBA has seen multiple games where a green sex toy has been launched on the court during games, resulting in at least one fan being arrested.
Tuesday night's game between the Sparks and the Indiana Fever saw a repeat of the incident when the object was thrown on the court near Fever guard Sophie Cunningham late in the second quarter.
Cunningham, who had earlier lashed out on social media over the seemingly viral trend, jumped back in surprise as Sparks star Kelsey Plum kicked the object off the court.
"I thought we did a great job, Indiana included, just playing on," Plum told reporters after the game. "Don't give it any attention. The refs, I really appreciate them too."
But Sparks head coach Lynne Roberts expressed her frustration with the repeated attacks.
"I think it's ridiculous. It's dumb. It's stupid," she said plainly. "We take – it's also dangerous. Player safety is No. 1, respecting the game, all those things. I think it's really stupid. That's all I'm going to say."
The WNBA announced last week that at least one person who allegedly threw one of the objects on the court during an Atlanta Dream game has been arrested and will face a minimum one-year ban for it.
"The safety and well-being of everyone in our arenas is a top priority for our league. Objects of any kind thrown onto the court or in the seating area can pose a safety risk for players, game officials, and fans," the league said in a statement. "In line with WNBA Arena Security Standards, any fan who intentionally throws an object onto the court will be immediately ejected and face a minimum one-year ban in addition to being subject to arrest and prosecution by local authorities."
Sex toys have been thrown at multiple WNBA games, including a Chicago Sky game on Friday. According to social media posts, additional sex toys were thrown during games in New York and Phoenix, none of which reached the courts.

5 soldiers shot by Army sergeant at Fort Stewart in Georgia, officials say
The alleged shooter, identified as 28-year-old Quornelius Radford, was tackled by other soldiers and arrested, according to authorities. Five soldiers were shot and wounded on Wednesday at a U.S. Army base in Georgia by a fellow soldier in a workplace shooting that prompted a lockdown, officials there say. In a post on its Facebook page, Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield said the shooting occurred in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area shortly before 11 a.m. local time. The alleged shooter was identified as Quornelius Radford, a 28-year-old automated logistics sergeant from Jacksonville, Fla., assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team. Radford joined the Army in January 2018 and has no deployments, according to the Associated Press. At a press conference on Wednesday afternoon, Brig. Gen. John Lubas, commander of the 3rd Infantry Division, said Radford was quickly "subdued" by fellow soldiers before law enforcement arrived. "Soldiers in the area that witnessed the shooting immediately, and without hesitation, tackled the soldier, subdued him and allowed law enforcement to then take him into custody," Lubas said. "These soldiers without a doubt prevented further casualties." All five of the wounded were transported to the hospital in stable condition, Lubas said. Three of the soldiers required surgery, and all are expected to recover. According to Lubas, the shooting occurred at Radford's place of work and involved his coworkers, but he would not speculate on a motive. Lubas said that Radford used a personal handgun, not a military-issued weapon, and that the incident remains under investigation. In an earlier alert announcing the lockdown, Fort Stewart said multiple 'casualties" had been reported in what was described as "an active shooter incident." Gates to the base were closed for several hours, and some schools in the area were briefly placed on lockdown. Fort Stewart, which is located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah, Ga., is home to about 10,000 people, including soldiers, family members and civilian employees, who live there, according to its website. The FBI in Atlanta said on X that its office in Savannah was aware of the incident and "coordinating with Army Criminal Investigation Division for any assistance that might be needed." President Trump was briefed on the shooting, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp wrote on X that he was "in close contact with law enforcement on the ground," adding that his family was "saddened by today's tragedy." "We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same," Kemp said.

Analysis-ESPN-NFL deal faces regulatory hurdles
By Jody Godoy and Dawn Chmielewski LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -The National Football League's deal with Walt Disney in which it will gain an equity stake in ESPN in return for prime media assets is expected to face scrutiny from the U.S. Department of Justice, according to legal experts and industry sources. The agreement, announced late Tuesday, involves Disney's ESPN acquiring the NFL Network and other media properties in exchange for the league receiving a 10 percent stake in the sports network. Andre P. Barlow, a partner at Doyle, Barlow & Mazard, said the transaction "surely raises competition concerns," because it could potentially give Disney greater control over televised sports carriage and reduce competition. "The deal could potentially result in higher costs for consumers, as Disney's dominance in sports media could limit options and drive up prices for streaming services or game access," Barlow said. The Justice Department is expected to conduct a substantive review of the new ESPN-NFL transaction, according to one source familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity. Another source said obtaining U.S. antitrust clearance could take up to 12 months. ESPN and the NFL declined comment. The expected review comes as the Justice Department's Antitrust Division is examining a separate deal Disney reached earlier this year to acquire a controlling stake in the sports streaming service Fubo TV. The division demanded further information from the companies in March to examine whether the deal would unduly concentrate the market for sports streaming. Meanwhile, the issue of rising costs for fans as games migrate to streaming services has reached the Senate, where the Commerce Committee held a hearing in May. "In an era of deep partisan division, sports might be the most powerful cultural unifier we have," said Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, who chairs the committee, noting it brings together Americans whether they're watching from their couches or in the stands. "But those millions of fans are asking a simple question: 'Why does it seem to be getting harder -- and more expensive -- to just watch the game?'" John Bergmayer, legal director of the non-profit Public Knowledge, voiced the same concerns. "The proliferation of streaming services -- and the fragmentation of content between them -- means that the costs of watching streaming video are rising, and for many people can approach what they were paying on their cable bill," said Bergmayer in testimony to the committee. "Some viewers feel like they finally broke free of the cable bundle only to watch it re-forming (before) their eyes." ESPN STREAMING SERVICE The NFL has done outreach to 30 congressional offices to discuss the terms of its deal with ESPN and how it would result in greater consumer choice, according to one of the sources. Under the agreement, ESPN would be able to add the NFL Network to its breadth of sports programming and incorporate it as part of its ESPN-branded streaming service. ESPN also plans to merge its fantasy football offering with that of the NFL. ESPN also will be able to distribute the NFL's RedZone to cable and satellite TV distributors, along with its other channels. The NFL will retain streaming rights to NFL RedZone, which is available online through YouTube TV. Disney won swift approval for its $71 billion acquisition of 21st Century Fox's entertainment assets in 2018, during President Donald Trump's first term, though it was required to divest Fox's 22 regional sports networks to address competition concerns. At the time, Trump called to congratulate the Fox's Rupert Murdoch on the deal. "It was worked out in record time," said Barlow, adding that this time around, he expects the Justice Department "to take a close look before approving the deal." One recent media deal, the $8.4 billion merger of Paramount Global and Skydance Media, became bogged down in a lengthy regulatory review, as President Donald Trump sued Paramount, claiming the CBS News program "60 Minutes" deceptively edited an interview with his Democratic rival for the White House, former Vice President Kamala Harris. The Federal Communications Commission approved the transaction within days of Trump receiving a $16 million settlement, though FCC Chairman Brendan Carr said the civil suit and regulatory review were unrelated. Politics could complicate the deal. Some sports industry insiders pointed to Trump's threats to interfere with a deal to build a new football stadium in Washington, D.C., unless the local NFL team, now known as the Commanders, changes its name back to Redskins, which was abandoned after decades of criticism that it was a racial slur. ESPN is currently 80 percent owned by ABC Inc as an indirect subsidiary of Disney, with the other 20% owned by Hearst. If the deal is approved, ABC's stake would drop to 72 percent and Hearst would fall to 18 percent to grant the NFL a 10 percent stake.

College football Top 25: Does No. 7 LSU have what it takes to get back into national title hunt?
College football officially begins this month. Now that it's August, there are less than three weeks until Kansas State and Iowa State meet in Dublin to begin the 2025 regular season. And since the season is quickly approaching, we're rolling out our preseason Top 25. Next up in our rankings is the No. 7 team, and the rest will be revealed in the coming days. LSU fell 27-20 to USC to start the season before reeling off six straight wins. That streak included a three-point victory at South Carolina and a three-point win over Ole Mis in overtime. Any chances LSU had of making the playoff disappeared after that, however. The Tigers lost three straight games after climbing to No. 8 in the AP Top 25. LSU lost 38-23 at Texas A&M, 42-13 at home to Alabama and 27-16 at Florida before beating Vanderbilt, Oklahoma and Baylor in the Texas Bowl to end the season. The quarterback Garrett Nussmeier The son of longtime college football coach Doug Nussmeier began his first full season as a starter on fire after taking over for 2023 Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels. Nussmeier threw for 18 TD passes over LSU's first six games. However, he threw just four TD passes over the next four games as LSU slumped away from the playoff race. Nussmeier rebounded as LSU did at the end of the season and threw for seven TDs over the final three games while completing over 70% of his passes in that stretch. He finished the 2024 season completing 64% of his passes for 4,052 yards and 29 TDs to just 12 interceptions. 'For one, just having last year to be able to go back and now and watch, study. This entire offseason has been about that for me, just watching all parts of the game, seeing the areas where I need to be critical on myself and improve at, whether it's taking care of the football or using my legs more in situations that I need to,' Nussmeier said. 'But it's also been about seeing the things I did well also. Having confidence in that and confidence this is what I was able to do in Year 1. And now it's just all I've got to do is raise the floor.' With LSU's offense adding even more skill position through the transfer portal, Nussmeier could be in line for an even bigger season. He's currently the No. 2 favorite for the Heisman Trophy at BetMGM with odds of +900. Only Texas QB Arch Manning (+600) has lower odds. Non-QB to watch WR Barion Brown How will LSU's offense utilize the speedy Kentucky transfer? Brown played a key role in each of his three seasons in Lexington, though his receiving numbers declined every year. After catching 50 passes for 628 yards and four touchdowns as a freshman, Brown had just 29 grabs for 361 yards and three TDs in 2024. Granted, Kentucky's quarterback situation didn't help matters. Brown will be playing with the best QB he's ever had in Nussmeier. His receiving stats should end up being better than they've ever been before. Brown could also be a real weapon in the return game for the Tigers. He has 50 career kick returns for 1,465 yards and five touchdowns. He and Zavion Thomas (24 returns for 633 yards in 2024) will be a fearsome duo for opposing teams to kick to. Best position group Wide receiver This group could be the best receiving corps LSU has fielded since its 2019 team had the likes of Ja'Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson and Terrace Marshall. Aaron Anderson returns after he had 61 catches for 884 yards and five scores a season ago. In addition to Brown, Nic Anderson also arrives in Baton Rouge via Oklahoma. He was hindered by injury all last season, but had 38 catches for 798 yards and 10 TDs as a redshirt freshman in 2023. Chris Hilton played in just six games in 2024 but had nine catches for 243 yards and three touchdowns. Thomas had only 218 receiving yards a year ago too, but had over 500 in 2023 at Mississippi State. It's a very deep unit that should open up things for a run game that struggled at times in 2024. Biggest game Aug. 30 at Clemson It's time for LSU to win a season opener. The team hasn't won its first game of the season since that 2019 title season. In 2020, LSU lost to Mississippi State. In 2021, LSU lost at UCLA. The next two seasons included season-opening defeats to Florida State and then there was that loss to USC a year ago. LSU head coach Brian Kelly knows the significance of being 1-0 for the first time in six years. 'We open up with a great program in Clemson. I know Dabo [Swinney] very well. Respect him and his program and the accomplishments they've had,' Kelly said. 'We played against each other several times when I was at Notre Dame and just have a ton of respect.' 'But we've also been 0-3 in openers at LSU under my watch. We needed to do some things differently this year. That is embrace this opener. Embracing it in a manner that this is a big game. It's a tangible goal for our football team to want to be 1-0. That's not,' let's warm up into the season.' We want to be ready for this football game. So we're doing everything in our power to give our players the opportunity for that success.' Why LSU is No. 7 The season is not lost with a Week 1 defeat at Clemson. Thanks to a monstrous SEC schedule, LSU will have plenty of opportunity to be in the playoff race. The Tigers have games against Florida, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Texas A&M, Alabama and Oklahoma in 2025. A win against Clemson will help the margin for error in that SEC gauntlet. Alabama missed out on the College Football Playoff a season ago with a 9-3 record. It only feels like a matter of time before a three-loss team gets into the playoff. But we're certain that LSU doesn't want to be the first team to test that theory. Along with what could be an explosive offense, the Tigers bring back three of their top five tacklers on defense and bolstered the unit via the transfer portal. Linebacker Harold Perkins should be fully healthy after an ACL injury cut short his 2024 season. He's also moved to the Star linebacker spot under defensive coordinator Blake Baker. It's yet another position change for Perkins after he had 13 sacks over his first two seasons with the Tigers. If he gets the chance to rush the passer more often in 2025, he'll have help from former Florida State edge rusher Patrick Payton. He's tallied 16 sacks over the past three seasons. Defensive back A.J. Haulcy also arrives from Houston, where he had 74 tackles and five interceptions in 2024. After five straight seasons with at least three losses, this is LSU's best chance to compete for a national title since that iconic 2019 campaign. The schedule is a gauntlet, but this team should be well-equipped to navigate it.
