
WOAH report: Infectious animal diseases affecting new areas and species
The WOAH report details that animal diseases are migrating into previously unaffected areas, half of which have zoonotic, or animal-to-human, potential.
The organisation has highlighted that outbreaks of bird flu in mammals more than doubled last year with 1,022 outbreaks across 55 countries compared to 459 outbreaks in 2023.
The authors of the report warn that while the risk of human infection remains low, the 'more mammalian species' – such as cattle, cats or dogs infected – the greater the possibility of the virus adapting to mammal-to-mammal, and potentially human, transmission.
Animal diseases
Bird flu – which has resulted in the culling or loss of more than 630 million birds in the last two decades – was according to WOAH, one of several animal diseases to affect new areas last year.
But it also identified a number of concerning developments including:
The spread of African swine fever (ASF) to Sri Lanka marked the most significant 'disease jump' of the year – travelling more than 1,800 km from the nearest outbreaks;
Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) once confined to the global south recently re-emerged in Europe, with outbreaks in Greece, Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary;
A total of 3,517 bluetongue outbreaks were reported by 23 countries;
Germany experienced its first foot and mouth disease (FMD) outbreak since 1988 and EU's first since 2011.
A zone within South Africa recorded the first occurrence of serotype SAT 3, while Iraq and Kuwait also reported an outbreak of serotype SAT 1;
The lumpy skin disease (LSD) was detected for the first time in northern Africa, with outbreaks reported in Algeria, Libya, and Tunisia, as well as Japan;
The report also highlights that half of the WOAH-listed diseases notified to the organisation between 2005 and 2023 were considered a threat to human health with zoonotic, or animal-to-human infection, potential.
The organisation has pointed to 'climate change and increased trade' among the key factors influencing the spread and prevalence of animal diseases.
According to WOAH, many of these diseases are preventable through a combination of vaccination, improved hygiene and biosecurity measures.
However the report also set out that access to animal vaccines remains uneven around the world.
Dr. Emmanuelle Soubeyran, director general of WOAH, said:' Alongside other measures, vaccination remains one of the most powerful disease prevention tools available, saving countless lives, preventing economic losses and reducing the need for antimicrobial treatments.
'To limit the spread of highly damaging diseases like avian influenza, foot and mouth disease and PPR, the global community must strengthen international cooperation and ensure equitable access to safe, effective vaccines, alongside other control measures.'
Since 2006, WOAH has supported access to animal vaccines through its vaccine banks and currently operates two, one for rabies and one for PPR.
In the latest report its stresses the importance of disease prevention for reducing the need for antibiotic treatment and limiting the development of drug-resistant diseases.
The latest figures indicate that antimicrobial use, including antibiotics, in animals fell 5% between 2020 and 2022, with use in Europe seeing the biggest decline of 23%, followed by Africa at 20%.
However, one in five countries continue to use antimicrobials as growth promoters, which is discouraged by WOAH.

ICMSA urges farmers to be 'bluetongue alert' over coming weeks
The Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers' Association (ICMSA) is urging farmers to be extra vigilant due to an increased risk of bluetongue virus. The chair of the association's livestock committee, Michael O'Connell said Ireland is currently one of the only countries in the EU that is free from bluetongue. Bluetongue is a notifiable exotic viral disease caused by bluetongue virus (BTV) which can cause severe clinical signs in ruminant species, such as cattle, sheep and goats, along with camelids. The virus, which does not pose a risk to human health or food safety, is primarily spread by the bite of infected midges, which are more active in warmer months. According to O'Connell, the disease is 'complex' in terms of control, noting there has been seven BTV cases in Britain since July 12. He said that the effects of the disease on herds and flocks include serious illness, death or, in cases where animals survive, immune system suppression, fertility issues, and milk yield suppression. O'Connell said the losses and economic impacts on farms across the EU have been "monumental" with some farms "unlikely to ever recover". 'Early detection is key and presently the midges which act as vectors for the disease are extremely active. "Midge activity increases once mean temperatures increase to over 12°C and considering the summer we have had so far, we have to assume more midge activity' he said. The ICMSA Livestock Committee chair said that farmers must be on alert till at least mid-October. O'Connell said that the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) are "doing everything possible". The department is running monitoring programmes across the southeast to ensure that any suspect case or fallen animal with unknown causes is being tested. 'Our colleagues in Northern Ireland have been able to access a vaccine for the most common known strain of the virus, BTV 3 since late July, but it is currently unavailable in the Republic of Ireland. "Reports from the UK is that uptake has been quite low, with majority of those being breeding herds. "It is vital that we give Irish farmers the opportunity and option to protect their herds and livelihoods, but there is the possibility of one strain of the vaccine 'camouflaging' and suppressing the virus in blood tests and that possibility needs to be acknowledged. "Is this causing more problems than it is giving reassurances? We have to take into account the potential accuracy and consequences regarding screening for the disease and trade restrictions," O'Connell said. The ICMSA Livestock chair said that if farmers are unsure of the health status of an animal or reasons surrounding deaths, they should contact their local district veterinary office or local vet. 'We are in a unique position at present in Ireland. We are the only country in the EU with a licence to export live animals due to our BTV free status. "It can be seen from this year's live export figures where we have an increase of roughly 35,000 head of cattle exported year to date that BTV-free status is hugely important. "Member states have had huge losses amongst their herds and are importing cattle to fill the deficit. "It is imperative that we do everything in our power to continue to fulfil the need for live cattle around the EU and our capacity to do that is hugely dependent on remaining bluetongue-free," O'Connell said.

Global phosphorous summit planned for Ghana
A global phosphorous summit is planned for Ghana next month (September 2025) as fears grow for the sustainable use of this key plant nutrient, particularly in Africa. The upcoming event will see scientists, policymakers and industry leaders from around the world meet to address the urgent need for sustainable phosphorus management. Phosphorus, a key component of fertiliser essential for crop and animal production, is now recognised as both a critical finite resource and a pollutant threatening aquatic ecosystems. With global demand rising and environmental concerns mounting, experts say coordinated global action is needed to avoid a crisis that could jeopardise food security and water quality worldwide. The 8th Sustainable Phosphorus Summit (SPS8), being held in Accra, is jointly organised by Lancaster University, the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH), Rothamsted Research, the Council for Scientific Research in Ghana, and the Forum for Agricultural Research Africa. It marks the first time the global conference has been hosted in Africa - a region where phosphorus use remains far below optimal levels, despite growing agricultural needs. Phosphorus use in African agriculture is generally sub-optimal and has declined sharply since the late 20th century. Experts warn that without urgent investment and innovation, the region's food production could falter under the twin pressures of population growth and climate change. While examples of sustainable phosphorus measures in Africa exist, including monitoring of water resources and recycling of biomass waste, these are often implemented only at pilot scale. Nevertheless, increasing fertiliser accessibility and optimising application remains a key priority to ensure improvements in farmer livelihoods and food security in the region. However, options for many African farmers are limited. While repeated use of cattle manure can contribute to recycling phosphorus to soil, this is not always practical for most smallholder farmers to achieve due to low numbers of livestock. The use of phosphate rock has been proposed as an alternative and is gaining momentum in Africa where the acidity of soils helps dissolve the phosphate. However, phosphorus can interact with other micronutrients which can be sparse in some of the continent's soils. For instance, it can affect zinc uptake in plants and subsequent dietary intake in humans, especially in communities reliant on plant-based diets. There is a need, therefore, for balanced phosphorus fertiliser application and increased recognition of its potential interactions with other essential nutrients. Meanwhile, inefficient phosphorus use elsewhere, particularly in high-income countries, has led to widespread pollution of rivers, lakes, and coastal waters, fuelling toxic algal blooms that threaten biodiversity and human health. Although current reserves of phosphorus are not at immediate risk of depletion, the uneven global distribution of phosphorus-rich rocks, coupled with rising demand for the mineral in lithium battery production and other industries, adds to concerns about long-term security and sustainability.

In a Word... Drink
We Irish are drinking far less these days, particularly the younger generation. Recent figures indicate that alcohol consumption per capita in Ireland has dropped 34.3 per cent since 2000. That's more than a 1 per cent drop for every year of this century, to date. What a falling off is there. It's embarrassing, really, and not just the fall, but its precipitous nature. Last year alcohol consumption in Ireland fell by an alarming 4.5 per cent compared to 2023. The Cliffs of Moher are not as sheer as that! Ireland is no longer a high alcohol consumption country, by EU/OECD standards. Another myth bites the dust. The `drunken Irishman', where are you now? With O'Leary in the grave? READ MORE This sudden sobriety is probably worthy of celebration. But with what? Water? Sparkling? The trend in abstemiousness is led by our younger generations, who are far less likely to reach for the bottle than those older. A report by Red C last April showed that 21 per cent of Irish 18 to 24 year olds drink `often', compared with 31 per cent of all adults. What worries me about this is where it might lead. Just look at the damage non-drinkers are doing and have done to this world. Donald Trump, for instance. Would the world not be a better place had he drank a bit, even developed an alcohol problem, in his youth? It is unlikely he would have entered politics then and who would now say that wouldn't have been a good thing? Speaking of polls and alcohol, a recent favourite found that the Japanese drink little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans. It also found that, while the Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine, they too suffer less heart attacks than the British or Americans and that, though the Germans drink excessive amounts of beer, they have less heart attacks than the British or Americans.
