Soccer-Tranmere's Finley gets 13-match ban for homophobic slur

(Reuters) -Tranmere Rovers midfielder Sam Finley has been handed a 13-match suspension and a 2,000-pound ($2,663) fine for homophobic language towards an opponent in a game against Walsall in January, England's Football Association said on Friday.
During Walsall's 5-1 win over Tranmere in January, Finley admitted to the referee that he had called Jamille Matt a homophobic term after the Walsall striker notified the match official.
The FA alleged Finley's language was "abusive and/or insulting and/or improper" and constituted an aggravated breach as it included a reference to sexual orientation.
Finley later admitted the charge against him and although the FA sought a six-month ban as it was Finley's third aggravated breach, an independent panel said there were mitigating factors.
The panel said the offending word was used only once and that the incident was not premeditated.
The panel added Finley showed remorse for the language used and he must now attend a mandatory face-to-face education programme. The 32-year-old also has the right to appeal.

Soccer-City midfielder Kovacic out of Club World Cup after Achilles surgery
MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) -Manchester City midfielder Mateo Kovacic will miss the FIFA Club World Cup after undergoing surgery to repair an Achilles tendon injury, the Premier League club said on Monday. The Croatian has been hampered by the injury for a while and sat out last month's 1-0 FA Cup final loss to Crystal Palace. "Mateo will spend the summer rehabilitating from the operation and everyone at the club wishes him a speedy recovery," the club said in a statement. The 31-year-old was not included in the squad for Croatia's World Cup qualifiers against Gibraltar on June 6 and the Czech Republic on June 9. Kovacic scored seven goals in 42 appearances for City this past season across all competitions. City kick off their Club World Cup campaign in the United States on June 18 against Wydad AC.
