Murray appointed as new Harriers boss

Kidderminster Harriers have appointed their former midfielder Adam Murray as manager following the sacking of Phil Brown. The 43-year-old took AFC Fylde into the National League as champions in 2022-23 and Harriers are hoping he can do the same for them after a near-miss under Brown. Murray left Eastbourne Borough last week after guiding them to a third-placed finish in National League South, just a point off the title. He took that job in January 2024, with Eastbourne 21st, and steered them to safety. He has also managed Mansfield Town and Boston United, as well as having two spells as caretaker manager at Barnsley. In addition to a season with Harriers in 2003-04, Murray's playing career also took in Derby County, Notts County, Burton Albion, Mansfield, Carlisle United, Torquay United, Macclesfield Town, Oxford United and Luton Town. Brown was sacked a fortnight ago after defeat by Southport on the final day of the season cost Kidderminster the National League North title, and they then lost to Chester in the play-off semi-finals. Club owner Richard Lane said of Murray on the club website: "His enthusiasm, commitment and passion for the position came through loudly when we met and his CV, as a player and a manager, speaks for itself."

Coach linked with Rovers steps down from his role at non-league club

Adam Murray has left his role as manager of non-league club Eastbourne Borough. The 42-year-old has been linked with a move to Ewood Park to become part of Valerien Ismael's backroom staff. Murray initially worked under Ismael at Barnsley and later followed the head coach to West Brom and Besiktas. He had a spell in charge at AFC Fylde before taking over at Eastbourne Borough in January 2024, leading the club to safety in the National League South. Murray's side finished third this season but were beaten by Maidstone United in the play-offs earlier this month. 'Today is an incredibly sad day as I say good bye to an amazing football club,' he told the club site. 'What a journey – from the miracle of survival to being so close to becoming champions – and I have loved every second of it. We have made some amazing memories and built some incredible relationships together. 'I would like to thank my boys and my staff, who have run through brick walls for me and I could not have asked for any more. The reason our home became a fortress was you and you being that 12th, 13th and 14th man. I will miss you! 'Finally thank you to Simon (Leslie). His backing and support has never stopped. He truly is a special man – his vision was what sucked me in and I hope I have played my part in moving it forward. Thank you. 'Unfortunately, home is calling and with five kids, I have to put them first. I have no doubt the future is bright for Eastbourne Borough under Simon's leadership. I will be watching from afar!'

Soccer-Tranmere's Finley gets 13-match ban for homophobic slur

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - FA Cup Second Round - AFC Fylde vs Wigan Athletic - Mill Farm, Fylde, Britain - December 1, 2017 Sam Finley of Fylde appeals for a penalty Action Images/Ed Sykes/File Photo (Reuters) -Tranmere Rovers midfielder Sam Finley has been handed a 13-match suspension and a 2,000-pound ($2,663) fine for homophobic language towards an opponent in a game against Walsall in January, England's Football Association said on Friday. During Walsall's 5-1 win over Tranmere in January, Finley admitted to the referee that he had called Jamille Matt a homophobic term after the Walsall striker notified the match official. The FA alleged Finley's language was "abusive and/or insulting and/or improper" and constituted an aggravated breach as it included a reference to sexual orientation. Finley later admitted the charge against him and although the FA sought a six-month ban as it was Finley's third aggravated breach, an independent panel said there were mitigating factors. The panel said the offending word was used only once and that the incident was not premeditated. The panel added Finley showed remorse for the language used and he must now attend a mandatory face-to-face education programme. The 32-year-old also has the right to appeal.
