Gary Neville unexpectedly cited in £2m Evangelos Marinakis lawsuit
Gary Neville became 'hostile' towards Evangelos Marinakis after a 'smear campaign' against the Nottingham Forest owner had attempted to 'influence' the Sky Sports pundit, according to documents lodged with the High Court.
Neville's 'hostile and ill-founded' criticism of Marinakis for walking onto the pitch after Forest's recent 2-2 draw with Leicester City was cited in a witness statement lodged as part of a £2.1 million libel action by the billionaire shipping magnate.
Marinakis, who also owns Greek Super League side Olympiacos, is suing Irini Karipidis, the owner of league rivals Aris, as well as Ari Harow, a former chief of staff to Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The lawsuit was launched last year after accusations were made against Marinakis saying he was the 'leader of a criminal organisation, guilty of match-fixing practices including extortion, fraud and arson, as well as there being strong grounds to suspect him of deep and active involvement in international heroin trafficking'. The Marinakis camp have called the allegations false and highly defamatory.
Karipidis and Harow are alleged to have orchestrated claims that appeared in three articles published on a website, 'nottinghamforestfire.co.uk', in November 2023 and that were repeated on an X account and in six YouTube videos. They were also displayed on mobile billboards driven around Forest's City Ground on two match days.
The latest documents emerged during a hearing on Wednesday and follow what David Sherborne, Marinakis's barrister, described as a 'settlement' between his client and US PR firm Harris Media LLC, 'which he said was instructed by the defendants to carry out this campaign on their behalf'. That settlement was said to have included the disclosure of 'new material', details of which were included in a witness statement submitted by Christopher Scott, Marinakis's solicitor.
Scott wrote: 'There has been significant document production which include over 500 documents that were provided shortly before this hearing on 20 May. The documents produced include WhatsApp chats, project plans, commentary and internal communications at Harris Media LLC, including congratulating each other on the impact of the campaign in Nottingham including being of in excess of 1.5 million views on social media, through to listing journalists and pundits to target to seek to influence their views of the claimant, including the likes of the Sky Sports presenter Gary Neville.
'It is notable that since the smear campaign commenced the claimant has been greatly aggrieved by the apparent change to a hostile attitude towards him by many such pundits, including Mr Neville. Indeed, Nottingham Forest FC recently had cause to complain about hostile and ill-founded criticism from pundits, including Mr Neville, of the claimant's expression of concern for a seriously injured Nottingham Forest player.'
Neville had been among those who criticised Marinakis for entering the pitch after Forest's game against Leicester and remonstrating with manager Nuno Espirito Santo.
That incident came after forward Taiwo Awoniyi had been allowed to play on injured after colliding with a post. Awoniyi was later admitted to hospital and placed in an induced coma. The Nigeria international has been recovering after an operation on a ruptured intestine.
Neville had branded Marinakis 'scandalous' and claimed Nuno should 'negotiate his exit tonight'. That prompted Marinakis to fire back in a remarkable statement, accusing the Sky Sports pundit of 'baseless and ill-informed outrage'.
The incident was not the first time Forest had clashed with Neville. In July 2024, Sky Sports issued an apology 'for any offence caused' by Neville after he accused the club of acting like a 'mafia gang'.
The broadcaster was hit with a legal letter from club lawyers after Neville had criticised a statement issued in response to Forest's 2-0 defeat by Everton in April 2024, in which they claimed they should have received three penalties and also highlighted VAR Stuart Attwell's support of Luton Town.
The libel claim against Karipidis and Harow is proceeding after they failed to get the case thrown out.
Matthew Hodson, for Karipidis, told a hearing in October that the social media campaign had 'limited publication', telling the court that it 'fared pathetically' and that there was no evidence of 'actual harm' to Marinakis's reputation.
Ali Reza Sinai, for Harow, stated that while there was 'obviously bad blood' between Marinakis and Karipidis, the allegations had 'no real connection' with his client.

Football transfer rumours: Garnacho off to Villa? Spurs in for Mbeumo?
Alejandro Garnacho will be allowed to leave Manchester United this summer if the price is right. One surprising potential suitor is Aston Villa, who could make a move for the winger. They took Marcus Rashford on loan from Old Trafford last season, revitalising his career somewhat in the progress, so Garnacho might feel it is a move in the right direction away from the current dead end. It will be a busy summer at United as Ruben Amorim attempts to assemble a squad that has the vague chance of fitting into his 3-4-3 constraints. One key area where improvement is required is centre forward. A potential plan to source an actual goalscorer could see United offer up Joshua Zirkzee to Napoli as part of a deal for Victor Osimhen. There could, however, be some very serious competition for the Nigerian as Liverpool might also fancy a nibble. Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike is another shortlisted name at United. The Frenchman scored 15 goals in the Bundesliga last season and, at 22 years old, could be getting better for years to come. If anyone does want to sign Ekitike, it will cost them €100m. 'If the price isn't right, then he'll just stay with us. We don't have to sell Hugo,' said the Frankfurt CEO Markus Krösche. Bayer Leverkusen and Erik ten Hag continue to sniff around the vicinity of the Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah. The 22-year-old defender struggled for regular minutes under Arne Slot last season but the homegrown centre-back is still valued at £40m around Anfield. Thomas Frank is now officially the new Tottenham head coach. When a manager moves from one club to another, there is always a few rumours that he will take some of his favourites from his previous employer with him. In Frank's case Bryan Mbeumo has already been heavily touted as someone of interest, while the midfielder Christian Nørgaard could be another name the new boss will whisper into Daniel Levy's ear, having word with his compatriot at Brondby too. Everton, Fulham and Bournemouth are also rumoured to be keen. Milan have gone on the blower to Arsenal to ascertain the availability of Oleksandr Zinchenko and Jakub Kiwior. If the pair do leave, it could prompt Mikel Arteta to firm up his interest in the Ajax defender Jorrel Hato but Chelsea are also interested. After impressing in the Scottish Premiership for Rangers, Hamza Igamane has gained a couple of admirers south of the border. West Ham and Brentford are somewhat eager to pursue a deal for the 22-year-old Moroccan, who netted 16 times last season. Leeds United are back in the big time and they want to bring the Udinese defender Jaka Bijol with them to the Premier League. The 26-year-old Slovenian, who has already amassed 63 caps for this country, is valued in the region of £15m. Anglian Water profits go up after price increases as debt swell to £7.7bn
Anglian Water has revealed stronger profits on the back of price increases for households, as the water supplier also reported another jump in debts over the past year. The utilities firm, which provides services to seven million people in the east of England, also revealed an increase in pollution incidents over the year. Anglian revealed on Friday that revenues grew by 7.5% to £1.75 billion for the year to March 31, compared with a year earlier. The rise was linked to price increases of 8.6% during the year. Earlier this year, the company said it was putting up bills by a further 19%, to an average of £626 a year, for the 2025/26 financial year from April. The firm also reported that operating profits grew by 15.2% to £496.5 million for the year to March. Meanwhile, the group said its net debts before derivatives grew by more than a tenth to £7.72 billion by the end of the year. Anglian said it grew its debt burden in order to help fund more than £1 billion in capital spending over the year for improvements to water resources and infrastructure in the region. The company is privately owned by a consortium including major pension funds and investment firms. Meanwhile, Anglian reported that its total pollution incidents increased last year, although serious ones were down 36% year-on-year. It also highlighted that the group's leakage performance fell below its individual target. Mark Thurston, chief executive of the business, said: 'We recognise the challenges ahead. 'The strategies and plans being implemented give us confidence in our trajectory and provide a clear road map for delivering consistent, high-quality outcomes for customers, colleagues, regulators, investors and the environment. 'In summary, 2024/25 has been a year of transition, focus and progress, setting firm foundations for a strong and successful AMP8 (Asset Management Period 8).' Last month, the water supplier was fined a record £1.42 million for drinking water failures that affected around 1.3 million people.
