Where is DeepSeek's next AI model? Speculation rises after OpenAI unveils GPT-5

China's leading artificial intelligence start-up,
DeepSeek , finds itself at the centre of speculation about the release of its next-generation R2 reasoning model, following
OpenAI 's launch of its GPT-5 model last week.
DeepSeek – which made waves in the industry with its V3 model in December and the R1 model in January – has not introduced major updates to its products in the past months, aside from two minor revisions.
While the market had expected DeepSeek to introduce a new foundation model within months of R1's release, the Hangzhou-based start-up – founded by computer scientist Liang Wenfeng as a side project of his quantitative trading firm – has yet to announce a schedule for the launch of the R2 model.
DeepSeek did not respond to a request for comment on Wednesday.
Developing and training an advanced model is an expensive and complex task, requiring substantial computing resources and training data, as well as sophisticated algorithms. It took OpenAI two and a half years to release GPT-5 after launching GPT-4 in March 2023.

According to a report by The Financial Times on Thursday, DeepSeek has delayed the launch of its new model owing to challenges in training it with Huawei Technologies' Ascend AI chips. The start-up has faced 'persistent technical issues' during the process, said the report, which cited an unidentified source.

China and Australia ready for ‘more productive' relationship, Beijing's ambassador says

China and Australia are ready to 'move beyond' stabilising relations and aim for 'more productive' economic cooperation, according to Beijing's ambassador Xiao Qian. There could be a 'closer alignment' between the Australian mining and Chinese manufacturing sectors through 'joint exploration, technology sharing and capacity enhancement', Xiao told a trade expo on Thursday. He said both countries had 'highly compatible' development strategies and 'can fully complement each other's strengths, collaborate in a coordinated manner and jointly build green, secure and sustainable' industrial chains. Earlier this week, the Australian mining giant Fortescue announced it had secured an offshore yuan-denominated loan worth 14.2 billion yuan (US$1.98 billion) from a syndicate led by Bank of China to support its decarbonisation plans. China has been Australia's largest trading partner, export market and source of imports for the past 16 years. However, after ties soured in 2019 and 2020, Australian goods were hit by a series of export curbs that Beijing only lifted at the end of last year.

China debuts first e-beam lithography machine for commercial use in chipmaking milestone

China is set to deliver its first domestically developed e-beam lithography tool for commercial use, advancing its chipmaking capabilities and taking a step forward in the race for technological advancement. Lithography systems – among the most sophisticated machines ever created – are crucial for the mass production of chips, though China remains in the very early stages of developing such tools domestically. Named Xizhi after the famed ancient Chinese calligrapher Wang Xizhi, the new machine was developed by a quantum technology lab at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou. It uses a focused electron beam to 'write' chip circuits onto silicon wafers. 'Due to export controls , such equipment has long been out of reach for leading domestic research institutions, including the University of Science and Technology of China and Zhejiang Lab,' Hangzhou Daily, a local media outlet, reported on Thursday. 'The delivery of Xizhi is expected to help break this impasse.' Beijing has ramped up efforts to localise advanced chip manufacturing in response to US export restrictions on hi-tech equipment, with recent progress strengthening its R&D capabilities.

Insta360's Antigravity unveils 8K full-degree drone, challenging DJI

Antigravity, a drone brand incubated by China's leading full-degree camera manufacturer Insta360, on Thursday unveiled its first product – the Antigravity A1 featuring a built-in 8K 360-degree camera and pilot goggles. Advertisement The machine is equipped with a dual-lens camera system mounted on both the top and bottom of its fuselage – a design that mirrors the capabilities of Insta360's popular X series action cameras, providing complete environmental capture without any blind spots, according to Antigravity. Included with the drone is a pair of goggles and a hand controller, enabling pilots to fly the craft using a drone's-eye view. Similar to Insta360's cameras, the A1 is said to be able to record all angles, allowing footage to be replayed in 360 degrees. Weighing 249 grams, the A1 'meets regulatory requirements in most countries and regions' and is set to hit global markets in January, according to the company. The drone maker said it was incubated by Shenzhen-based Insta360 in collaboration with third parties and developed by 'a global team of engineers, designers and creators'.
