Hugh Laurie's brutal response to podcast host who invited him on as a guest - and the massive disdain he showed for fans of House
Doctor Mike, whose real name is Mikhail Varshavski, is a family medicine physician who launched a podcast named The Check Up With Doctor Mike.
The podcast has featured a segment where Doctor Mike reacts to old House episodes and debunks what is medically accurate or not.
House saw British actor Hugh, 66, take on the role of the cantankerous Dr Gregory House in the medical drama from 2004 to 2012.
During a new episode with Noah Wyle, who played Dr John Carter in ER, Doctor Mike revealed Hugh's shocking reaction when he was asked to come on the podcast.
Doctor Mike said: 'We invited Hugh Laurie to our show because a lot of folks like when we do House M.D. reacts. And his staff was like oh this is a good fit. We're going to reach out to him and see what he thinks.
'I'm gonna read you quote-unquote what he said. 'He is not interested in opportunities like this, frankly doesn't care about the audience or reliving the show.'
Noah was clearly impressed with Hugh's line, and said: 'That's so baller'
While Doctor Mike added: 'It's just such a direct and honest reply.
Noah reiterated: 'So baller!'
Doctor Mike added: 'Not just that he won't do your show, he just doesn't ever wanna be House M.D. ever again.'
Noah insisted he is much more amenable, and said: 'I'm a gemini, middle child pleaser. I'll answer any question you'll ask me.'
Referencing his part in The Pitt, Doctor Mike said: 'But you do care about the audience. In fact, it's driven you to do this new show and continue season two and continue crushing it, representing for us.
Noah replied: 'I care about certain audiences.'
Doctor Mike asked: 'Okay, and that healthcare audience falls into that mix?'
He responded: 'This was scripted as a love letter to first responders and front line workers to say, we recognise what you guys have been going through.'
Hugh's response doesn't really come as that much of a surprise as he previously told how starring in US medical drama House turned into a 'nightmare' despite him being the best-paid actor on TV.
He was paid a reported £250,000 an episode and won two Golden Globes for his long-running role as curmudgeonly Dr Gregory House.
But he suggested to the Radio Times in 2013 that his huge success became 'a gilded cage', with the actor even fantasising about having an accident just so that he could take a few days off.
While filming the Fox show, Laurie had his car windows tinted to avoid being snapped by phone cameras and stopped buying his own groceries because he 'couldn't stand people photographing the contents of my shopping basket'.
He admitted: 'At this distance it all sounds absurd. Ridiculous! After all, what was I doing other than playing about, telling stories with a very nice bunch of people? What could be constricting about that?
'But the repetition of any routine, day after month after year, can turn into a bit of a nightmare.
'I had some pretty bleak times, dark days when it seemed like there was no escape. And having a very Presbyterian work ethic, I was determined never to be late, not to miss a single day's filming. You wouldn't catch me phoning in to say, 'I think I may be coming down with the flu'.
'But there were times when I'd think, 'If I were just to have an accident on the way to the studio and win a couple of days off to recover, how brilliant would that be?''
The actor lived in Los Angeles while his wife and three children stayed in Britain during his time on the show.
Asked if readjusting was difficult when he returned home after a near eight-year commitment to House, he replied: 'Yes, but probably more so for the family.
'For me it's been a delight to be back with them, to walk the dog, to listen to music and to read. I'm still appreciating and enjoying it.'
Hugh, the former comedy partner of Stephen Fry, said that he might not be physically able to take on such a gruelling role again.
At the time, he told the magazine that he would like a job directing, partly because it would allow him to wear his own clothes.
'If the opportunity presented itself, I'm not sure I'd either want or could physically do it. I imagine sportsmen come to a similar crossroads,' he said of taking a lead role in another major, ongoing series.
'Maybe there'll come a day when (footballer) John Terry says, ''I'm not up for the full 90 minutes any more. I can give you 60. Or perhaps I could just come on in the second half?'' The legs start to go and you realise you're feeling the pain a lot more.'
He said 'some very good' scripts, 'some not so good and others so weirdly like House that you wonder what they're thinking of' were still pitched to him.
He added: 'The big thing is that I'm a decade older than when I got that role. Even then the character was scripted as 10 years younger at 35 - and Fox would have preferred 28, to keep advertisers happy. Now if my name comes up for the lead, there'd be a shaking of heads. 'He could play the dad...''
He said of his future: 'I'd like to do something that involves wearing my own clothes for a while. It's an odd thing to go to work each day and wear someone else's.
'For House I also had a fake wallet with fake money in it, fake keys that didn't open anything and a fake watch that didn't tell the real time. All I can say right now is that there are things of my own I'm developing that I'm pretty excited about.'
Hugh, who has spoken previously about suffering from depression, said that he still expects disaster to strike.
But he added: 'When you assume that the worst is going to happen, you're freed up from any anxiety about the when and the where of it. Not that I'd ever be foolish enough to think I've finally got the hang of this life business,'
The actor, who is gearing up for the release of his second album and set to star in Tomorrowland with George Clooney, said of his Hollywood status: 'One great benefit of not being on TV every week is that people will be a lot less interested in what I have in my supermarket basket. I could even un-tint my car windows - or at least opt for a lighter shade.
'When the ship goes down, the waves very quickly roll over the top of it and attention shifts elsewhere. It's just the natural order of things in TV - in life - and is as it should be.'
In March 2020, Hugh briefly revisited the character to tell House fans what his iconic character would have made of the coronavirus pandemic.
He tweeted: 'I can't speak for House, obviously – no one's written clever words for me to say – but I'm pretty sure he'd tell you it's not a matter of 'solving' Covid.
'This is an epidemic, not a diagnostic problem. We solve it together by staying apart.'
He also praised healthcare workers, saying: 'When this is over, what say we all pitch in and buy health care workers, couriers, hauliers, farmers, millers, grocers, bakers, sewage workers, power workers, teachers, fire fighters and police officers a bottle of something?' he wrote.
He later added: 'Thanks to those who've taken the trouble to tell me that decent pay and conditions for essential workers might be preferable to a bottle of something. Bigger thanks to those who knew that's what I meant.'
Laurie also said: 'Chin up, everybody. This will work. However irksome it is for us, it's much worse for the virus. Picture the little bugger with its nose against the window, whining.'

Pierce Brosnan, 71, is supported by his stunning granddaughter Isabella Smith, 26, and dapper son Dylan, 28, at The Thursday Murder Club afterparty
Pierce Brosnan turned the premiere for his latest role The Thursday Murder Club into a family affair as he headed to the after party with his granddaughter Isabella and son Dylan on Thursday. The actor, 71, is starring alongside Helen Mirren, Sir Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie in the film adaptation of Richard Osman 's best-selling novel, which is set to be released on Netflix on Friday. After posing on the red carpet for the premiere, Pierce made his way into the after party with Isabella, 26, and his son Dylan, 28. The James Bond star, who plays Ron in the upcoming flick, looked handsome as ever as he arrived at the star-studded event in a brown double-breasted suit. Isabella, who previously joined her grandfather at the MobLand premiere after party in March, opted for an elegant purple satin gown. Dylan opted to match his dad with a sharp camel suit as they joined fellow star Helen Mirren, who had changed into a chic floral shirt dress, at the party. Pierce has kept a strong family bond with Isabella after her mother, Charlotte - who is his adopted daughter - died from cancer in 2013. Pierce adopted both Charlotte and her younger brother Christopher, 52, after their father, Dermot Harris died in 1986. Charlotte's mother later died of ovarian cancer in 1991, which left the siblings without their biological parents. She then welcomed two children of her own, Isabella and Lucas, with her partner Alex Smith. But Charlotte died just weeks after marrying Alex in 2013 from the same cancer her mother had. Before Cassandra's death, she and Pierce welcomed their biological son, Sean, 41, in 1983. Pierce, who has five children in total, is also a father to Dylan, 28, and Paris, 24, who he welcomed with his current wife Keely Shaye Smith, 61. The Thursday Murder Club centers on a witty group of retirees who spend their days in a peaceful retirement community—bonding over their shared hobby of solving cold cases. But their quiet pastime takes a thrilling turn when they stumble upon a fresh murder mystery that demands their attention. Helen leads the cast as Elizabeth, a sharp ex-spy with a knack for uncovering secrets. Pierce plays Ron, a former union activist with a passionate spirit, while Ben Kingsley portrays Ibrahim, an insightful ex-psychiatrist. Celia Imrie rounds out the group as Joyce, a compassionate ex-nurse who balances the team. Osman wrote the book in secret over 18 months, sparking a fierce 10-way bidding war before Penguin Random House secured the rights for a seven-figure deal in 2019. Upon its 2020 release, The Thursday Murder Club became the only novel that year to sell over one million copies, ranking as the third best-selling hardback behind Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol and JK Rowling's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The success led to three sequels: The Man Who Died Twice (2021), The Bullet That Missed (2022), and The Last Devil to Die (2023). A fifth installment is already planned for publication next year.

Car pool chaos as rock 'n' Rolls-Royce recreates The Who's swimming stunt
Readers with any mechanical sympathies may want to look away now, after a £500,000 Rolls-Royce Phantom ended up in the Tinside Lido swimming pool in Plymouth. However, this wasn't the climax of a drunken billionaire's wild night out. In fact, it was actually Rolls-Royce itself which deposited the six-metre long Phantom Extended – a retired prototype destined for recycling – in the pool. The stunt is part of the British marque's ongoing celebrations for the Phantom's 100th birthday, and a tribute to the car's role in music history over the past century – specifically, the debauchery and excess of rock 'n' roll. Advertisement - Article continues below The company was inspired by the antics of Keith Moon, the immensely talented and famously destructive drummer for sixties Mod legends The Who. The story goes that during his 21st birthday party, 'Moon the Loon', as he was known, drove a Rolls-Royce into the swimming pool of The Holiday Inn in Flint, Michigan. Accounts of the night vary wildly, and it's possible no car went for a swim, but nevertheless the story has become the stuff of legend. Moon died in 1978, but 23 August 2025 would have been his 79th birthday, so now at least one Rolls-Royce has definitely ended up wet because of him. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below If you fancy driving your very own Rolls-Royce into a swimming pool, then check out the Auto Express Find a Car service where you can find loads of great deals on used Rolls-Royce models . Rolls-Royce used the Tinside Lido not because it was the only place that would shut down its pool on a hot summer day, but because it was apparently part of the backdrop in a photograph of The Beatles taken in September 1967, when the Fab Four visited while filming for The Magical Mystery Tour. John Lennon was, of course, one of the Phantom's most famous owners, and in 1972 he unveiled his psychedelic yellow Phantom V. Countless other music legends have played a role in the car's history, including Duke Ellington, Fred Astaire, Count Basie, Elvis Presley, Sir Elton John and Snoop Dogg. Today, Rolls-Royce is mentioned in rap and hip hop songs more than any other car brand. 'From the Golden Age of Hollywood to the rise of hip-hop, over the last 100 years, music artists have used Phantom to project their identity and challenge convention,' said Chris Brownridge, CEO of Rolls-Royce. 'Their motor cars often became icons in their own right, with a lasting place in the history of modern music. 'This enduring connection reminds us that Rolls-Royce and the extraordinary people who are part of the marque's story are united by one ambition: to make their presence felt.' Kathy Griffin, 64, continues to show off THIRD facelift as she steps out in Malibu
continued to show off her third facelift during a solo outing in Malibu on Thursday. The 64-year-old comedian - who first unveiled the latest cosmetic procedure earlier this month - was seen stopping by a gym for a Pilates session during the daytime excursion. The TV personality confirmed that she underwent the surgery on an episode of her Talk Your Head Off podcast. Kathy kept it casual wearing a pair of fitted, blue leggings as well as a short-sleeved, dark navy shirt. She additionally slipped into a pair of black, Croc flats and easily carried a vibrant blue purse in her hand. Her reddish locks fell down past her shoulders in natural waves while her bangs fell onto her forehead. Kathy flashed a cheerful smile as she made her way through a crowded parking lot towards the gym. The My Life On The D-List star recently commented on her recent taut appearance during an episode of her podcast which aired earlier this month. 'Very taut is also very true!' the actress said, before confirming she had underwent another facelift. 'It's my third. I know that's so vain! I'm so vain for no reason. 'No one has ever gone to a Kathy Griffin show to see her beautiful, youthful face. You come to hear my jokes, which is what I want.' She continued, 'I don't want you to come to care what I look like. I'm in Lululemons today for God's sake. I'm in my fat pants. I don't have dysmorphia... I have a little.' Kathy gave candid details about the procedure and shared to her fans that her facelift was done by Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Ben Talei. The comedian - who previously presented him a Daytime Beauty Award in 2023 - then gushed, 'I love him, I can't say enough good about him.' Along with the facelift, the star also got a foxy eye lift, work done on her chin as well as a blepharoplasty - which 'removes excess skin from the eyelids,' per Mayo Clinic. 'There's a stitch in my chin, which you're probably not going to see unless you're under me, but not in that way,' she explained. 'I'm going to be honest. It's painful. So these bi***es that are like, "It's like getting a tooth filled! It's nothing!" No, it's painful.' Afterwards, Kathy went to a 'rich lady recovery place' and then returned home. 'You get out of that place and you come home and maybe you come home with a nurse, and it's disgusting. I'm not going to lie. The first night there's drains that come out of your chin. I know it's so gross. But the vanity takes over.' And last week, the Emmy winner unveiled her facelift and wrinkle-free appearance during an outing in Malibu. One month earlier in July, the actress l ooked nearly unrecognizable as she sported a wild hairstyle in L.A. Kathy - who had half of her left lung removed during a 2021 cancer battle - has opened up about ageism in the entertainment industry in the past, such as when she interviewed with Deadline back in 2016. 'I hear it all the time,' she said, referencing to comments she has gotten about her age over the years. 'I've been hearing it since I was 30, from managers, agents, studio heads and network executives.' Kathy continued, 'I'm sure I heard it in the last year. They really think nothing of saying to me, "You're really funny, but they've decided to go younger." It's so common for a woman to hear that. 'I don't think anyone ever told them you're not supposed to say that. They think it's still a legitimate reason for someone not to get a job...' The comedian's plastic surgery journey began back in 1986 when she had a nose job at the age of 26. Other procedures she has undergone in the past include a brow-lift, breast enlargement and near-fatal liposuction. Kathy is preparing to hit the stage later this year for two shows and referenced her latest cosmetic surgery in the tour name which is called: New Face, New Tour. On November 8, she is slated to perform in Las Vegas at the Criss Angel Theater at Planet Hollywood. And later that same month, the comedian will also hold a show in Anaheim, California on November 22. Kathy made the announcement in July and shared, 'Just when you thought I was done… I come back better than ever in classic Griffin fashion! 'I'm happy to announce two new upcoming shows this November. Find me in the glamorous Las Vegas on November 8th and Anaheim on November 22nd.'
