Kelsey Grammer reveals shocking cocaine and booze spiral following sister's grisly murder

Daily Mail02-05-2025

Kelsey Grammer is pulling back the curtain on a lifelong battle with grief, addiction, and guilt in his new memoir Karen: A Brother Remembers, which confronts the brutal 1975 murder of his younger sister Karen.
The Frasier actor, now 70, reveals that Karen's horrific death — she was raped and fatally stabbed just weeks before her 19th birthday — shattered his world and fueled a years-long descent into drug and alcohol abuse.
Adding to the trauma was Grammer's family history of violence: his father, Allen, had been shot and killed seven years earlier.
Grammer - who previously said that he 'forgives' his sister's murderer - admits he tried to escape the pain, but it only dragged him further into addiction.
Between the late '80s and mid-'90s, Grammer faced multiple arrests for DUIs and cocaine possession before finally checking into the Betty Ford Center.
'There was always this voice in my head saying, "Enough. You know why you're doing this,"' he told People on Friday. 'But another part of me wanted to let go completely — to let the pain take over.'
The Frasier actor, now 70, reveals that Karen's horrific death — she was raped and fatally stabbed just weeks before her 19th birthday — shattered his world and fueled a years-long descent into drug and alcohol abuse
Through it all, Grammer never let his personal struggles derail his career.
While battling his demons behind the scenes, he kept delivering laughs as Dr. Frasier Crane — first on Cheers (1984–1993) and then leading his own smash hit, Frasier (1993–2004).
'It seemed to make it more damning in a way, but you know what? I had to do it, so I'm okay,' he said to the outlet. 'I learned that I really am a 'I don't quit' kind of guy. I can look at the past and see, "Oh, well, you still did what you had to do."'
For years, however, Grammer said, happiness was out of reach.
'For a long time, the grief was so dominant that I couldn't access happiness,' he said. 'The book helped me get to a new place with that.'
In Karen: A Brother Remembers, Grammer recounts the harrowing details of his sister's murder in hopes of helping others navigate their own grief.
Grammer begins the book by reflecting on his and Karen's difficult childhood, according to excerpts from People.
The siblings were just kids when their parents divorced in 1957.
At a parole hearing in 2009, Grammer wrote a letter to the court which read, 'She was my best friend and the best person I knew. She had so much to live for. I loved my sister, Karen. I miss her. I miss her in my bones'; seen in 2022 in NYC
Kelsey, a toddler at the time, and Karen, only a few months old, moved with their mother Sally from St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands to New Jersey.
Their father, Allen, remained in St. Thomas. The siblings wouldn't see him again until 1967.
The family endured more loss when their grandfather Gordon passed away in 1967.
Then, in 1968, their father was shot and killed by a taxi driver during a wave of racial violence in St. Thomas.
The motive behind the killing was never fully understood, and the shooter was later found not guilty by reason of insanity.
Karen moved to Colorado Springs in 1975 to be with her boyfriend after a semester in Georgia.
Their last conversation was on June 30th, when she told Kelsey she planned to come home after the Fourth of July.
When he didn't hear from her again, Kelsey contacted the police. It was soon discovered that Karen had gone to her job at Red Lobster that night to wait for a friend.
There, she was kidnapped by Freddie Glenn and two accomplices who had planned to rob the restaurant.
When they saw Karen alone, they forced her into their car. After abandoning the robbery, the men drove her to an apartment, where they assaulted her. Glenn then drove Karen to an alley, where he fatally stabbed her 42 times.
Glenn was later convicted of her murder and several other killings.
The tragedies continued for Grammer.
In 1980, his half-brothers Billy and Stephen were killed in what's believed to have been a shark attack while scuba diving in the Virgin Islands.
Billy's body was never recovered, while Stephen's was found washed ashore.
In his memoir, Grammer talks about the legacy of loss in his family.
'There's a legacy of early death in my family, which is really interesting,' he wrote, per People. 'I pray to break that cycle and give my family longevity.'
Grammer shared the completed book with his wife, Kayte Walsh, who was supportive throughout the process.
'She said, "I've missed you,"' he recalled to People. 'I had to step away for a while — there were hours on end when I would just be staring off.
'But she was patient and loving through it. Writing this brought back some of the joy I had lost.'

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez's wedding in Venice is approaching: Everything to Know

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his fiancée, Emmy-winning journalist Lauren Sanchez, are getting set to tie the knot in one of the year's most anticipated weddings. '(I'm) very excited about it,' she told Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie while appearing on TODAY in November 2024. '(I'm) thinking about the dress, I have to say. I do have a Pinterest. I'm just like every other bride. So I do have a Pinterest board.' Sanchez, 55, is also a pilot and children's book author whom many fans may recognize for her work as a correspondent on 'Extra.' She said she is amazed at the trajectory of her own life. 'I never thought at 54 — I'm going to be 55 — that I'd be an author, that I'd be getting married,' she said on TODAY. 'I mean, life is just beginning. When I was 20, I thought, 'Oh my gosh, life is over at 50.' Let me tell you: It is not, ladies. It is not over. It is just beginning.' When is Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez's wedding? The couple's wedding celebration is expected to take place from June 24 to June 26 in Venice, Italy, a spokesperson for the mayor of Venice had told CNN. Where is it? The wedding will take place in Venice, Italy. The impending nuptials have sparked protests from people who are concerned that the couple are taking over the city and causing overcrowding, as tourists have descended upon Venice. Despite the outrage, the Municipality of Venice said in a statement in March that the city is ready to oversee the wedding. 'The many speculations and fake news circulating about Jeff Bezos' wedding are completely unfounded,' the municipality said. 'Only 200 guests will have been invited and therefore it will be easy for Venice to accommodate such an event, without any disruption whatsoever to the city, its residents and visitors.' Who is on the guest list? The guest list hasn't been released, but People reported Sanchez's bachelorette party in May featured the likes of Katy Perry — who flew aboard with Sanchez on Bezos' Blue Origin all-female trip to space in April — Kim Kardashian, Kris Jenner and Eva Longoria. Vogue reports the party had other heavy hitters on hand, too, including Fox Sports' Charissa Thompson and Veronica Grazer, whose husband is Hollywood producer Brian Grazer. When did Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez get engaged? The couple were first romantically linked in 2019, according to People. Bezos and Sanchez announced their engagement in 2023. Earlier that year, Sanchez gushed about Bezos in an Instagram post for his birthday. 'Happy birthday to the man of my dreams, who lights up my world with his laughter and kind heart,' she wrote. 'You have shown me that no great love is not bravely fought for. Thank you for always being by my side and for being the most loving and supportive partner. I am so grateful for the memories we have made and the adventures yet to come. Here's to many more birthdays filled with love and laughter. 'Te amo con todo mi corazon,' she ended the post, which is Spanish for, 'I love you with all my heart.' Bezos was previously married to MacKenzie Scott from 1993 to 2019. The couple have four children together. Sanchez was previously married to Hollywood agent Patrick Whitesell, with whom she has two kids. She also has a son with her former partner Tony Gonzalez, a retired NFL star.

28 Years Later director reveals 'nightmare' of shooting naked zombie scenes

28 Years Later director Danny Boyle has opened up on the challenges the crew faced while shooting nude zombies. The third film in the franchise hit cinema screens 23 years after 28 Days Later was released, revolutionising the zombie subgenre in the process. The film, starring Cillian Murphy and Naomie Harris, was followed by 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later, but 18 years of silence followed, with rumours constantly swirling that a third film was coming. Last year, Boyle and original writer Alex Garland confirmed 28 Years Later was in the works, and its eagerly anticipated release has been met with rave reviews from critics branding it 'a masterpiece.' The film has the same Rage-infected creatures we were introduced to more than two decades ago, with some interesting evolutionary changes upping the ante. Many of the monsters in the film appear naked as they chase after the ensemble cast, featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Alfie Williams, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The decision to have the zombies running around in the buff was a natural progression for them, given the setting of the film, almost 30 years after the events of 28 Days Later. 'I mean, if you're recently infected, you'd have some clothes, but if you've been infected for a long time, the clothes would just disintegrate with the way that you behave,' Boyle told People. However, the presence of 14-year-old newcomer Williams on set meant that actors portraying the zombies could not actually be naked around the minor under the Child Sex Offences Act. Boyle said the crew 'never knew that' when shooting, describing the process of creating a naked illusion as a 'nightmare.' 'Interestingly, because there was a 12-year-old boy on set, you're not allowed for anybody to be naked, not really naked, so they look naked, but it's all prosthetics,' he explained. More Trending The warning from intimacy coordinators meant that every zombie cast member had to have prosthetic genitals made for their scenes. 28 Years Later follows a group of survivors on an island who have managed to carve out a semblance of normality for themselves away from the mainland where the infected roam. Jamie (Taylor-Johnson) takes his 12-year-old son Spike (Williams) to the mainland to bag his first kill and learn about the horrors of the modern world, with Spike stumbling onto a discovery that could help his sick mother Isla (Comer). 28 Years Later is in cinemas now . Vanessa Feltz show guest apologises after remarks spark almost 2,000 complaints

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Vanessa Feltz's talk show has been hit with nearly 2,000 Ofcom complaints after a guest called a mother 'selfish' for wanting to breastfeed. Earlier this year, the 63-year-old announced she was leaving This Morning after 33 years. The broadcaster was a regular contributor to ITV, but now has her own show on Channel 5, which she has described as a 'politics-free zone'. However, after inviting fashion designer Karen Millen onto her sofa to speak, her programme has been hit by a wave of complaints from viewers. Vanessa reportedly asked Karen what she thought about breastfeeding a three-year-old child. Karen replied: 'There's no benefit, is there, for a child to be breastfed beyond six months really. I think it's quite a selfish thing on the mother's part.' She went on to say: 'I just think that's not good emotionally for that child. I mean, what does that child do later in life? 'The attachment – like you say it becomes an addiction and an addiction for that child too because they only know the boob. It's just not normal, is it? I'm sorry, I find it very weird.' Following the episode, 1,856 complaints were made to Ofcom, as some viewers also took to social media. Good Morning Britain – March 8, 2021: A discussion about the interview between Oprah Winfrey and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex received a whopping 54,595 complaints. Celebrity Big Brother – January 10, 2007: This episode, which focused on the alleged bullying of Shilpa Shetty by fellow housemates, received 45,159 complaints. Celebrity Big Brother – August 30, 31, and September 1, 2018: A huge 25,327 complaints were made following Roxanne Pallett's allegation of assault by Ryan Thomas. Britain's Got Talent – September 5, 2020: Diversity's performance generated 25,017 complaints after viewers perceived it as supporting Black Lives Matter. Love Island – August 6, 2021: In total 24,921 complaints were made focusing on Faye's behaviour towards Teddy. Julia Hartley-Brewer interview – January 3, 2024: Julia's interview with Palestinian politician Dr. Mustafa Barghouti received 17,366 complaints according to Ofcom. @richardbuka wrote on X: 'My god, Karen Millen is a moron. How do we live in a society where it is considered unnatural to breastfeed but ok to reconstitute freeze-dried whey protein from an animal that diverged in evolution from us 100 million years ago and shove that into a baby every four hours?' @keyboardgirl8 added: 'I thought Karen Millen dresses faded away in the 2000s. Glad I haven't purchased anything from them in a long time, what an ignorant woman.' @tichenekr also commented: 'Can safely say I'll never buy from Karen Millen again. Disgraceful.' Since her appearance on Vanessa's show, Karen has apologised, saying: 'I know I've upset a lot of your viewers and that was not my intention'. In a clip, she can be heard explaining: 'The question was aimed at a three-year-old being breastfed and my thoughts on that and my answers reflected that, not the subject of breastfeeding. 'I have three children and I breastfed all three of them up to six or seven months… 'I think my issue was more on the fact as a baby breast milk is the best and beyond being a baby, growing into toddler, I just found it more difficult to comes to terms with how it would benefit a three-year-old.. 'And as a woman to women, I do respect your choices and I do want to support you…' This comes after Vanessa was criticised for comments she made about people with coeliac disease in 2023, with her remarks being blasted as 'irresponsible' by viewers. A caller named Alison claimed she was 'being forced to have a gluten-free Christmas' because her mother-in-law insisted the meal be void of gluten to cater to one person, who has to have a gluten-free diet. Responding, Vanessa said: 'She's treating coeliac disease as if it's a kind of fatal, potentially fatal peanut allergy and that they can't have anything with gluten in the house, which is completely unreasonable.' More Trending Following the segment, the charity Coeliac UK released a statement lambasting what was said, and also posted an open letter that the organisation addressed to ITV. The tweet read: 'Today on ITV's @thismorning, coeliac disease was discussed during a phone in segment on the show. We are deeply concerned about the content and advice given to a caller attending a Christmas family event where all of the food will be gluten free to protect the health of a person with coeliac disease.' Metro has approached Karen Millen and Channel 5 for comment. View More » Vanessa is available to watch on Channel 5. Got a story?
