Marco Arop's coach hails world champion runner as 'once-in-a-lifetime athlete,' marvels at fast recovery time
Years before Marco Arop ran 800 metres to a 2023 world championship gold medal and Olympic silver the next year, he was a 400-metre sprinter and could be spotted red-lining, or pushing his body to its maximum effort, during high school workouts in Edmonton.
But he had zero sense of pace.
"If coach gave me three 400m [intervals] I would go all-out in the first one and struggle through the next two," Arop recalled during a break in training while preparing to race the 800 and 1,500 at Grand Slam Track this Saturday and Sunday in Philadelphia.
Arop would eventually understand his limits that enabled him to push through pain.
Most successful track and field athletes don't shy away from the pain of training, but Arop understands the pain pushes him a step closer to his ultimate goals, according to his coach.
"It means he's determined and committed to the craft, and he is not going to let anything get in his way," said Chris Woods, who has worked with Arop since becoming head track and field coach at Mississippi State University in 2019.
The 26-year-old Arop can buffer lactic acid, or hurt longer and more, than anyone Woods has seen in 12 years at MSU.Woods, who began coaching at the U.S. collegiate level in 2009, has guided several track standouts, including four-time Canadian 800m champion Brandon McBride, but none like Arop.
"He's a once-in-a-lifetime athlete. The way Marco can recover between fast, long and hard intervals, I've never seen anything like it," Woods told CBC Sports. "My best educated guess is it's genetics and his upbringing."
To illustrate his point, Woods cited one of Arop's recent workouts at MSU.
It consisted of broken runs of 700m (500/200), 600m (400/200) and 500m (300/200) that included a 48-second run in the 400.
"For me, that's just another day at the track," Arop told Toronto sprinter Aaron Brown and two-time Canadian Olympic hurdler Perdita Felicien for CBC Sports' Trackside show. "This [was] the first race pace workout [I've] done this year. I'm used to seeing those times in training, but it's cool to see the reactions [from others].
"To run [one minute 41 seconds over 800 metres], and potentially faster, [I] have to be able to run fast paces on short recovery."
"In the middle of that workout," Woods told CBC Sports, "he was running paces that would add up to a 1:36 800m run. In no way am I suggesting he would cover 800 in that time. It just shows how long he can hold paces such as that with minimal rest."
Talk of David Rudisha's seemingly untouchable 1:40.91 world record only grew louder when Arop ran a 1:41.20 personal best in the Olympic final last Aug. 10 to finish 1-100th of a second behind Kenya's Emmanuel Wanyonyi in Paris.
"It's been a goal of mine since I started running. That was the first race I watched before I did my first high school 800," Arop told Brown and Felicien.
"Watching David Rudisha run that world record inspired me to get to that level. Now that I'm knocking on the door, it's really cool and a testament to all the work that's been put in. I got to give a lot of credit to my coaches because without their belief, I don't think I would be near where I am now.
"To get to 1:39," continued Arop, "that's going to be another level, so that's the next step."In Philadelphia, Arop will aim for his first Slam title in three attempts after his combined point totals from the 800 and 1,500 placed him second in the short distance group in Jamaica last month and Miami on May 3.
After racing the 1,500 first at those events, the 800 will be contested first on Saturday at 4:57 p.m. ET, followed by the 1,500 Sunday at 5:01 p.m.
"That will be a new experience," said Arop, who has raced on back-to-back days in his career but not in different distances. "I'm confident in my ability to race the 800 with fatigue in my legs. I'm not sure what the 1,500 is going to feel like [fatigue-wise]."
Arop, who is using the Slam competitions as training for various aspects of his races, believes racing the 1,500 helps him stay consistent and deliver better finishes in the 800.
"I'm probably the strongest I've been [in my career]. My early [season] fitness is the best I've seen and [I'm] touching on the speed work now [in training] so I'm excited where it's going to take me," he said.
Added Woods: "Running the 1,500, in theory, will make him a more well-rounded middle-distance athlete. By the end of the season, I believe fans will see a middle-distance athlete that's in the lower 1:40s in the 800m and the lower 3:30s, if not 3:20s, in the 1,500.
"He'll be a very dangerous runner when that happens."
The final stop of the Grand Slam Track season is June 27-29 in Los Angeles.
Arop will race there before joining the Diamond League professional track and field circuit. He is scheduled to race in Monaco (July 11) London (July 19) and possibly Lausanne, Switzerland (Aug. 20).

Final 2025 NHL Draft Rankings: Ryan Kennedy's Top 100
The 2025 NHL draft is fast approaching, and with that, it's time to drop some final rankings. The top 100 you'll find below are very similar to the ones you will find in The Hockey News' Draft Preview because, duh, I wrote them both. But with the benefit of a few more weeks, I did tweak these – including in the top 10. Advertisement I will also point out that in the past few years, I've done a final 120. I've trimmed it this time because there were players I talked to scouts about who were seen as 'non-drafts' altogether, and I would rather have a top 100 with the least amount of uncertainty possible (as if that's possible, ha ha). I don't want to just list "guys" for the sake of. Final note: Perhaps the biggest X-factor in the class is Minnesota high school center Mason West. The big Edina Hornets star is also an elite football quarterback, and while he says he's focused on hockey, he also recently revealed he will be playing high school football again in the fall before heading off to the USHL. When I talked to scouts about this possibility during the season, they did not like it – they would have preferred to see him playing college hockey next year. How will this ultimately impact his draft stock? Well, it only takes one team to step up and take him, so we shall wait and see. In the meantime, here's how I see things: Matthew Schaefer (Brandon Soto / OHL Images) 1. Matthew Schaefer, D, Erie (OHL): An elite blueliner with great hockey IQ and skating acumen who can make an impact in all three zones. Schaefer brings a ton of skill to the ice, but also a lot of character. He's a pick you can build a franchise around. Advertisement 2. Michael Misa, C, Saginaw (OHL): Absolutely destroyed the OHL this season, winning the Red Tilson Award as most outstanding player in the process. Misa has one of the best shots in the draft, and he really improved his 200-foot game this season. 3. Porter Martone, RW, Brampton (OHL): A power forward in the mold of the Tkachuk brothers, Martone is a beast of a teen who earned time at the IIHF World Championship once his OHL year was done, playing on the same Canadian team as Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon. 4. Anton Frondell, C, Djurgarden (Swe.): Helped Djurgarden's pro team win the biggest series in Swedish history in getting promoted to the SHL over rival AIK. Frondell is a big center with a great shot who plays a very team-friendly game. 5. James Hagens, C, Boston College (NCAA): A super-smart and talented center who put up admirable numbers as a freshman in college, Hagens doesn't have ideal size, but he did play on Team USA's top line en route to world junior gold. Advertisement 6. Caleb Desnoyers, C, Moncton (QMJHL): Took his Wildcats to a QMJHL championship and a Memorial Cup berth. Desnoyers is a smart, 200-foot player with great details, and he can also blow your doors off in terms of offensive production. 7. Roger McQueen, C, Brandon (WHL): A suspected back injury had scouts a little leery, so we'll see who takes him on draft day. A healthy McQueen is a titan-sized center who skates well, drives the net and plays with a lot of skill. 8. Victor Eklund, RW, Djurgarden (Swe.): Frondell's teammate on that instant-legend Djurgarden squad, Eklund doesn't have a lot of size but plays like he does. He's got an excellent motor and already has a world juniors under his belt, where he was one of Sweden's best producers. 9. Brady Martin, C, Sault Ste. Marie (OHL): Farm-boy strong, Martin is just scratching the surface, and the early returns are already impressive. He was massive for Canada at the World Men's Under-18s and carried a Soo team that didn't have a lot of other options this season. Advertisement 10. Jackson Smith, D, Tri-City (WHL): Another World Under-18s standout, Smith got hot at the end of his WHL season and put up nice offensive numbers. But his skating and defensive work are really his calling cards, making him an attractive asset on the blueline. INDIANAPOLIS — Tyrese Haliburton used to have the video staff assemble clips of his made shots and assists. Then, Rick Carlisle became his coach with the Indiana Pacers. 'He's really helped me learn how to watch film, which I think is important,' Haliburton said. 'I think that's something that's not talked about enough. … If you're just watching and trying to find your highlights, that's much different than really trying to dissect things." Carlisle and Haliburton are spending time dissecting video of Oklahoma City's defense on Haliburton and the Pacers through the first two games of the NBA Finals. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continues to make his case While the series is tied at 1-1, the Thunder have led for all but one minute and 53.3 seconds of the 96 minutes over two games. Headed into Game 3 Wednesday, June 11 (8:30 p.m. ET, ABC), attention is on Haliburton and his ability to break down Oklahoma City's top-ranked defense. 'We've gone through these situations many times, not only during the playoffs but during the regular season, not just this season but prior seasons,' Carlilse said. 'We're going to have to adjust and create better situations. We're going to have to be better.' In the Thunder's 123-107 victory in Game 2 on Sunday, June 8, Haliburton scored 17 points and had six assists, but 12 points came in the fourth quarter when the Thunder had established control. It doesn't mean the Pacers can't learn from those points and help Haliburton create better offensive opportunities. Carlisle and Haliburton acknowledged that it is difficult playing against the Thunder's top-ranked defense. 'Oklahoma City has more people to throw at a great player – really at both of our All-Stars,' Carlisle said. 'They can throw bigger, smaller, medium guys at Tyrese and at Pascal (Siakam). It's one of their strengths.' The Thunder made a change to their lineup at the start of the Finals, inserting Cason Wallace into the starting lineup and putting Isaiah Hartenstein on the bench. That gives the Thunder more versatility with a smaller but still strong lineup. That decision takes away some of Indiana's ability to find favorable matchups. According to player-tracking data, Oklahoma City's Lu Dort, a first-team All-Defensive selection this season, Jalen Williams, a second-team All-Defensive selection this season, Alex Caruso, an All-Defensive choice in 2023 and 2024, and MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander are guarding Haliburton the most. They are using their size, strength and speed to help defend Haliburton. 'They got more guys than most teams in the NBA that are high level at the point of attack,' Haliburton said. 'They're really connected on the defensive end. I feel like they mix up coverages. I think (Thunder) coach (Mark) Daigneault isn't afraid to do things on the fly. He doesn't do everything that's like very traditional.' Haliburton hinted at a couple of solutions. Getting into the offense quicker in the shotclock and curtailing pick-and-roll sets. 'That starts with me just getting us in better positions, playing out of different spots, all those things,' Haliburton said. 'Definitely got to mix it up against these guys.' OPINION: Pacers cannot keep relying on crazy comebacks. They must start quicker, finish stronger. During the regular season, 37.7% of Indiana's shots were taken with 15 or more seconds remaining on the 24-second shot clock. In the Finals, just 30.5% of the Pacers' shot attempts came with 15 or more seconds on the shot clock. 'I feel like I probably got caught in too many high pick-and-rolls where they can really pack it in and end up getting shots late against the clock, especially the first half of both games,' Haliburton said. In the fourth quarter of Game 2, the Pacers found success getting Haliburton the basketball on the go, using multiple screens to give him space in the paint and at the 3-point line. None of that is easy, especially with the Thunder using their physicality, and Haliburton is a banged up with what he termed a 'lower (right) leg thing' but he says he is fine and will be ready for Game 3.
