Chittoor collector slams officials over illegal sex determination tests
Chittoor: Chittoor district Collector Sumit Kumar has expressed strong dissatisfaction over the lack of coordination between government departments in preventing illegal sex determination tests being carried out in violation of the PCPNDT Act, 1994. Chairing the District Level Advisory Committee meeting on Saturday, the Collector questioned why health officials were unaware of such critical violations happening for a long time in the district.
He pointed out that despite the presence of grassroots workers like ASHAs and ANMs, there was no awareness when a woman conceived for the third time after having two girl children—a crucial indicator in such cases. 'Why is this information not reaching the department? Why haven't departments like Health and Women & Child Welfare held coordination meetings over the past ten years involving CDPOs and medical officers?' the Collector asked.
He noted that even the way Anganwadi workers distribute nutritional supplements to pregnant women could be a clue to their health condition—an area being overlooked due to poor inter-departmental coordination. To better understand field-level issues, he directed that two senior district officials personally interact with ASHAs, ANMs, and Anganwadi workers.
He urged the health department staff to work responsibly to curb illegal sex determination practices. He also highlighted that regions bordering other states like Nagari, Palamaner, Punganur, and V Kota – had a higher incidence of unauthorised abortions in private hospitals.
The DM&HO was directed to hold division-wise meetings with RMP doctors to address the issue. Field-level officers were also instructed to conduct visits and gather ground realities. Additionally, the Collector instructed the Drugs Inspector to ensure that no medical shop dispenses medicines without a doctor's prescription. He also responded to concerns raised by the Women's Police CI regarding unauthorised sale of scanning machines and ordered a complete review of related records.

Govt launches ‘Saheli': ASHAs to help check illegal abortions in Haryana
Gurgaon: 'Saheli' is changing the lives of women like never before. Fifty thousand Sahelis — 20,000 ASHAs and 30,000 ANMs — are making daily calls and visits to pregnant women across the state for real-time monitoring and swift reporting of miscarriages. With a view to preventing unsafe and illegal abortions, a new initiative — Saheli programme — was launched by the health department on Wednesday, with ASHAs (accredited social health activists) directed to alert medical officers immediately on any miscarriage. Gurgaon has already implemented the new initiative. Seventeen villages that have less than 700 sex ratio at birth (SRB) for the last three consecutive years are being monitored more strictly. These villages are located in Bhora Kalan, Pataudi, Farukhnagar and Ghangola areas. Chief medical officer (Gurgaon) Dr Alka Singh said, "To tighten regulation, all registered medical practitioners (RMPs) must now source MTP kits exclusively from Life Line Medicare, Sushant Lok, while the supplier is mandated to submit monthly sales data for cross-verification." "Under the Saheli initiative, 3,120 ASHAs are now making daily calls to pregnant women for real-time monitoring and prompt miscarriage reporting in Gurgaon," the CMO said. Haryana's SRB fell from 916 in 2023 to 910 last year. Haryana has for decades struggled with a skewed sex ratio, often attributed to practices like female foeticide and a strong preference for a boy child. \ At 834, Haryana's SRB was the lowest among all Indian states when data was studied in the 2011 Census. The state improved its count to 923 by 2019 but started seeing a downward trend thereafter. Meanwhile, this constant care is not appreciated by all. "I understand they want to help, but it feels like I am under a microscope. Every day, a call, a visit — like I am being watched more than cared for. I am pregnant, not a suspect," Urmila Singla, a resident of Pataudi, said. Between Jan and May 2025, the district registered seven FIRs under the MTP Act and two under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PC-PNDT) Act, reflecting increased vigilance and enforcement. Senior medical officers (SMOs) have been tasked with conducting fortnightly meetings with frontline health workers and monitoring birth and death registrations. Any unusual trends must be reported with explanations. Interestingly, in Gurgaon, 712 MTPs were recorded among women with more than one girl child, but none were flagged as suspicious, prompting the department to initiate reverse tracking in suspected cases involving over-the-counter MTP kit misuse. "We have also started to reverse trace the cases. Sahelis are told to inform about any miscarriages to their respective medical officers," the CMO added. Additionally, 23 suspected illegal MTP cases are under investigation by BAMS doctors, while 50 BHMS and 328 BAMS practitioners have been registered to support the initiative. The Saheli initiative is being hailed as a model for community-based maternal health surveillance, combining technology, grassroots engagement and regulatory oversight to protect women's health and uphold the law.

Nullifying violations of PCPNDT Act should be ensured, says Coimbatore collector
Coimbatore: Dr R M Meenakshi Sundari, the joint director (Acts) of the Directorate of Medical and Rural Health Services (DM&RHS), Chennai, has stressed the need to strictly enforce the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act. "Although the Act is in force, achieving 100% compliance remains a challenge," Dr Sundari said while addressing a one-day training programme for medical staff from across the Coimbatore region in the city on Thursday. Health officials, medical practitioners, and representatives of diagnostic centres from both government and private sectors from Tirupur, Nilgiris, Erode and Coimbatore districts participated in the programme. District collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar released an exclusive PCPNDT Act book during the programme. While addressing the participants, the collector said, "The Act pertains to addressing the ethical and social issues of sex determination of a child. Due to the effective enforcement of this Act, Tamil Nadu has been showing a better sex ratio when compared to other states. Even then, achieving 100% compliance and nullifying violations of this Act should be ensured, for which the training programme is necessary. The programme is organised to underscore the legal nuances and provide a platform to discuss the improvements or changes required in the Act. " Dr Sundari presented a few litigation cases from 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2008 that led to streamlining the Act and providing clarity on its enforcement.

Integrate yoga into daily routines for better health: Collector Sumit Kumar
Chittoor: Chittoor district Collector Sumit Kumar stressed the importance of integrating yoga into daily routines, stating that regular yoga practice can prevent many health issues. Speaking at a yoga awareness programme held at Puligundu village in Penumuru mandal of GD Nellore constituency, the Collector highlighted the significance of yoga in promoting physical and mental well-being. The programme, organised under the Yoga Andhra initiative and coordinated by the District Tourism Department, saw the participation of Chittoor SP Manikantha Chandolu as the chief guest alongside the Collector. They both addressed the gathering and stressed the importance of yoga as a part of daily life. Collector Sumit Kumar mentioned that yoga awareness campaigns have already been conducted at prominent tourist locations like Kanipakam temple, and the current event at Puligundu witnessed the participation of over 2,300 people. So far, nearly 2.5 lakh people have registered under the Yogandhra 2025 initiative, reflecting the widespread interest. He further noted that practicing yoga for at least half an hour every day can significantly reduce mental stress and improve productivity. He urged everyone to make yoga a part of their daily schedule and emphasised that 5,000 trained yoga instructors are currently available across the district to support the initiative. SP Manikantha Chandolu shared practical tips for maintaining good health, such as getting sunlight exposure before 8 am for vitamin D, eating a diet rich in vegetables, breathing fresh air, and combining these practices with yoga for overall wellness. As part of the event, experienced yoga instructors explained the importance of yoga and demonstrated various asanas. The programme was attended by District Tourism Officer Gowri, DRDA PD Sridevi, DSDO Balaji, Chittoor RDO Srinivasulu, among others.
