From Dubai to Osaka to Riyadh: Expos mark decade of global dialogue, says UAE official

Arab News11-04-2025

DUBAI: The move of expos from Dubai to Osaka and soon to Riyadh presents a 'unique opportunity to shape a decade of global engagement' in the Middle East and Asia, according to Shihab Al-Faheem, the UAE pavilion commissioner general.
The sequence of the three locations 'offers continuity for themes such as innovation, sustainability, and cultural dialogue,' Al-Faheem said in an interview with Arab News Japan.
'It also strengthens connections between our countries. The UAE, Japan, and Saudi Arabia each bring distinct strengths and perspectives,' he added. 'By working together through these global platforms, we can create long-term partnerships that deliver meaningful outcomes for people and the planet.'
Al-Faheem, who is also the UAE's ambassador to Japan, said the Osaka-Kansai Expo this year carries special meaning for the Gulf country.
The UAE's first expo journey began in Osaka more than five decades ago, and the commissioner-general explained that returning to Japan was 'an opportunity to continue engaging with the world and to contribute to shaping a future grounded in cooperation and collective progress.'
As the baton was passed from Dubai Expo 2020 to Osaka, Al-Faheem said the most important insight the UAE valued was that of creating experiences that are immersive, inclusive and people focused.
'We also learned that strong logistical planning and a flexible, responsive approach are essential to hosting a successful expo,' he told Arab News Japan. 'We believe these lessons will resonate with Japan as it welcomes the world in 2025.'
When it comes to the UAE's participation in Osaka this year, the country's pavilion will continue its 'immersive and multi-sensory journey' giving visitors a chance to 'engage on an emotional and intellectual level.'
The UAE Pavilion's theme is 'Earth to Ether,' which expresses the Gulf country's journey from a heritage rooted in the land to a future defined by innovation.
With sustainability and technology in mind, Al-Faheem said the pavilion uses eco-conscious materials such as Datecrete and palm-based architectural elements to reflect environmental values.
'The content of the pavilion also showcases our leadership in clean energy, smart healthcare, and space technologies,' the ambassador said.
The architectural design draws inspiration from traditional Emirati structures and uses materials from the date palm. Inside the pavilion, visitors will be able to experience stories that reflect the UAE's values and vision for the future.
Given that the UAE and Japan have both hosted World Expos, Al-Faheem said that this has allowed the two countries to strengthen 'an already deep and multifaceted relationship. These global events provide a powerful platform to showcase shared values and to develop partnerships across sectors such as energy, education, culture, and technology.'
The UAE Pavilion at Expo 2025 is expected to honor the relationship between the two countries and create new opportunities for joint initiatives.
Al-Faheem said he hopes that through the upcoming expo, the UAE will be able to deepen people-to-people ties with Japan and to create cultural and educational exchanges.
Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai will run from April 13 to Oct. 13, with an official opening ceremony on April 12.

Bacteria suspends water shows at Japan's World Expo

The discovery of high levels of bacteria has led the World Expo in Japan's Osaka to suspend daily water shows and use of a shallow play pool, organizers said. It comes after visitors also complained that swarms of tiny flying insects had invaded the vast waterfront site where Expo 2025 runs until mid-October. Nearly six million people have visited exhibits from more than 160 countries, regions and organizations since it opened in April. Although polls showed that public enthusiasm for the Expo was lukewarm before its opening, organizers say crowds have been growing, especially in recent weeks. But concerns were raised over environmental conditions at the reclaimed island site in Osaka Bay, which was once a landfill. Organizers said Thursday that high levels of legionella bacteria had forced them to close an area with shallow water where visitors, including children, could cool off. That followed a statement released Wednesday saying daily fountain shows with music and lights at an artificial pond had been suspended for the same reason. They said they were cleaning the affected areas, adding that a decision would come on Friday on whether the shows could resume. Days before the Expo opened, a level of methane gas high enough to potentially ignite a fire was detected at the site. More recently, organizers sprayed insecticide to deter swarms of non-biting midges bothering guests. Also known as a World's Fair, the Expo phenomenon, which brought the Eiffel Tower to Paris, began with London's 1851 Crystal Palace exhibition. It is now held every five years in different global locations.

Ministers of Hajj and Health visit Arafat to review its preparedness for Hajj

Saudi Gazette Report MINA — Minister of Hajj and Umrah Tawfiq Al-Rabiah and Minister of Health Fahad AlJalajel visited Arafat on Wednesday to inspect the elaborate arrangements and preparations made to extend the best possible services and facilities for the Hajj pilgrims who head to the vast plains of Arafat on Thursday for performing the ritual of wuqoof Arafat, the climax of Hajj. Al-Rabiah carried out a field inspection tour of various locations within the holy sites, as part of the ongoing preparations for the Hajj 2025. He examined readiness of pilgrims' camps, facilities, and services before pilgrims commence their movement to Arafat for the most important ritual of Hajj. The tour included a detailed field visit to assess Arafat's readiness to receive pilgrims. The minister reviewed the efficiency of the camps, accommodation facilities, and logistical services, as well as the integrated health, technical, and service equipment—all to guarantee the smooth and safe performance of rituals. Al-Rabiah also closely followed the progress of the shading and cooling project for the courtyards surrounding the Namirah Mosque. This project stands as one of the unique initiatives dedicated to improving the environment in Arafat, covering an area of 85,000 square meters. It incorporates 320 canopies and 350 misting fans to provide a pleasant atmosphere, in addition to the planting of 2,000 trees in the eastern courtyards to expand vegetation cover. A comprehensive infrastructure, including water and electricity networks, has been prepared to ensure the project's sustainable operation. Al-Rabiah emphasized the crucial importance of integrating efforts among all participating entities and operating according to the highest standards of operational efficiency to serve the pilgrims. He stated that these actions are in direct implementation of the directives of the wise leadership, aspiring to achieve a model Hajj season that reflects the Kingdom's distinguished position and leadership in managing this grand ritual. Minister of Health Fahad Al-Jalajel visited several field health units operated in collaboration with health associations in Arafat. This visit was part of his inspection tour to assess the readiness of health services for pilgrims during the Hajj season 2025. Al-Jalajel reviewed the medical units' equipment and the health teams' preparations to ensure the delivery of health services at the highest efficiency. This aligns with the objectives of the Health Sector Transformation Program and the Pilgrim Experience Program under Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to enable pilgrims to perform their rituals in a healthy and tranquil environment.
