SMA Brings Digital Connectivity, Opportunities To Remote Long Busang Community
The two-day programme, held from July 9, attracted more than 200 residents of all ages and represents the latest effort by SMA to build on its initiatives since introducing telecommunications infrastructure to the area in 2019 - a move that has since reshaped the digital landscape of this once-marginalised community.
The programme was made possible through the collaboration of various agencies, including the Sarawak Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD), Sarawak Public Service Digitisation Unit (SCSDU), SiliconNet Technologies Sdn. Bhd (SNT), the State Library, Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC), Sarawak Skills and a smart agriculturel entrepreneur, Cooplay Nyipa Aji.
SMA General Manager Datuk Dr Anderson Tiong Ing Heng said the agency hoped the telecommunications network would serve not merely as a platform for social media but as a catalyst for the community's active participation in the digital economy.
"This programme is designed to empower the community with digital knowledge and skills, encourage community participation in the digital economy and promote the Sarawak government's digital applications and services," he said at the closing of the programme last Thursday (July 10).
The text of Tiong's speech was read out by his deputy, Dr Suhaila Jaafar.
Tiong said the presence of SMA, along with other participating agencies, was not merely to introduce new ideas and technologies, but also to engage with the Long Busang community and better understand their needs and potential.
'This is crucial to ensure that every digital initiative we implement is truly beneficial and tailored to local needs,' he said.
Meanwhile, Dr Suhaila told reporters that the programme also served as a platform to assess the progress of the community in Long Busang since the 4G and Wi-Fi services were launched by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in 2019.

In June, US imports of Chinese goods fell by 7.5 per cent to US$18.95 billion from US$20.49 billion in May. The last time imports were lower was in February 2009, when they amounted to US$18.85 billion. Sibu traders urged to join Kedai MyKasih for wider market reach

The initiative aims to expand market reach and increase income for local traders. Sibu MP Oscar Ling Chai Yew highlighted that participation allows traders to serve low-income households eligible for Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA). 'Traders who sell at least 70 per cent of the 14 listed essential goods categories can apply,' he said in a statement. The categories include white rice, beverages, bread, eggs, seasonings, and toiletries. Other eligible items are medicines, instant noodles, biscuits, flour, stationery, and canned food. Cooking oil and household cleaning products are also part of the approved list. Ling's parliamentary service centre recently launched a mobile counter in town to assist with registrations. Though registration numbers remain below target, Ling called it a vital step in raising awareness. Interested traders can visit the Sibu DAP headquarters for application support. Approved partners will receive a government-provided POS system and barcode scanner. The programme simplifies access to essentials for SARA beneficiaries using MyKad. Malaysia pledges data-driven ASEAN progress as 2025 chair
Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin. - BERNAMA KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has reaffirmed its dedication to fostering a united, inclusive, and data-centric ASEAN during its 2025 chairmanship, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM). The nation aims to enhance statistical capabilities, align regional indicators, and ensure measurable progress that strengthens governance and regional solidarity. Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin emphasised the need for accurate data to reflect both regional performance and the lived realities of ASEAN citizens. He stated that ASEAN member states and national statistics offices are pivotal in driving evidence-based development. The 8th Working Group Meeting on Sustainable Development Goals Indicators recently convened 29 delegates, including virtual attendees from Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar. Held in Putrajaya on Aug 5 and 6, the meeting finalised agreements on the ASEAN Statistical Indicators–Consolidated Template. Discussions also covered the ASEAN SDG Indicators 2025 Progress Report, slated for release in September. The working group's multi-year plan for 2026–2030 aligns with the ASEAN Community Statistical System's vision and action plan. The ASEAN Helping ASEAN Framework will be reinforced through collaborative efforts to identify regional needs and expertise.
