Jefferson Parish Schools decrease teacher vacancies ahead of school year
JEFFERSON PARISH, La. (WGNO) — As Jefferson Parish students arrived Monday to start the new school year, they were met with smiling faces, many of them new. 'It's one thing when you kind of see, you know, the preparation gets in place to start the school year. But when the babies show up and you see the smiles on their faces, the smile on their parents' faces is just a good thing to see that they're excited about being back in our schools,' said Superintendent James Gray. Over the summer break, the parish school system made a major turnaround in teacher vacancies, going from close to 150 openings last year to fewer than 70 this year. Chief Academic Officer Laura Roussel says that number is a great place to be in. 'We don't want any vacancies, but that at least equates to about one per school or less. Many of our schools are fully staffed. We've been putting measures in place to really get our teachers here and to really recruit and retain,' said Roussel. Single mom invents the scents of New Orleans Roussel explains that many teachers left due to the COVID pandemic. To help fill the openings, the school system turned to job fairs and a partnership with Reach University. The program helps staff members become teachers. 'Allows us, these people, to be in school right now, receiving that four-year degree while working and teaching in Jefferson Parish. So, it's a great way to invest in our workforce,' said Roussel. Gray said a boost in pay also helped fill the openings. But he says pay is something he wants to continue fighting for. 'We have another small raise, but another raise that we've been able to self-fund again this year. So it's two years in a row. We were able to make some cuts in some places and put it in the places where we really need it. And that's in trying to make sure we reduce teacher vacancies,' said Gray. Both Gray and Roussel say they want to see more jobs filled throughout this school Posts Powerball jackpot hits $526M: Are these numbers 'due' for a win? 2 Juarez police officers killed in attack White House launches review of Smithsonian museums Charge upgraded for man accused in hit-and-run killing BRPD Sgt. LSU grad transforms his disability into a game-changing career
James Robert III was born with no fingers on his left hand, and he is using his disability to fuel a passion to help others like him. The recent Louisiana State University graduate is pursuing a master's degree in prosthetics and healthcare administration while serving as chief print technologist at Make Good NOLA, a New Orleans-based organization that creates custom prosthetics for children with limb differences. When Robert was 2 years old, he underwent a toe-to-hand transfer surgery to improve functionality in his left hand. The procedure, however, didn't work as hoped. Still, he went on to play multiple sports, learn to play the trumpet and develop skills in archery and marksmanship, all with just the five fingers on his right hand. "Putting a positive spin on it, it was hard. Not impossible, but very, very, very, very, very hard," he said. "I had to take whatever anyone could throw at me and just keep kicking." That included name-calling, insults and exclusion, he said. Robert said he found motivation in his grandfather's advice: "People with small minds hate dreamers. They can't see the dream." Robert is turning his lived experience into solutions for others. Working with mentor Noam Platt, founder of Make Good NOLA, Robert has co-created the first 3D-printed wheelchair and numerous other adaptive devices using state-of-the-art 3D printing technology. "We've found, with most of our staff who are disabled, is that they're the best problem-solvers, the smartest, hardest workers I've ever met," Platt said. "Being here and doing the right thing at the right time, being in the right place," Robert said. "It's beautiful." Robert's mother, Deidre, was beaming with pride during a surprise reunion arranged by CBS News. "I want to say that I'm so proud of the man that you are, the man that you've become, and how you give of yourself so selflessly to others, and you burn the candle at both ends to do it. It just speaks volumes about who you are, and you really are the change that we wanna see in the world. You're our future. I'm so proud that you're part of it," she said. "That's how you raised me to be," said Robert.
