Nipsey Hussle's Popular Marathon Burger Is Opening Its Next Location Just Steps From the Beach

Eater27-05-2025

One of Los Angeles's hottest burgers is about to make a major splash in Venice. After receiving a warm reception for its Melrose shop in March, Marathon Burger will debut its second location on Saturday, May 31. Samiel 'Blacc Sam' Asghedom (brother of the late rapper Nipsey Hussle) and his team will sling crispy-edged smash burgers on the Venice Beach Boardwalk next to the pickup basketball courts and Muscle Beach in a space once occupied by another LA burger favorite — the Window.
In fall 2024, Marathon Burger started as a pop-up in Fairfax's former Johnny Rockets space while interior construction was underway. Since opening for full service in March, fans queue up regularly to order wagyu smashburgers, chicken wings, and fries, including a regular stream of notable music industry visitors like Young Thug, Boosie, and retired NFL player Marshawn Lynch.
Though a Venice outpost was in Asghedom's sights for the future, he didn't plan to open a second Marathon so quickly. 'When opportunities present themselves, you gotta kind of jump on it,' Asghedom. 'We had an opportunity to present itself for that location on the boardwalk, and I'm like, 'Oh, we gotta do it.''
The Marathon team has quickly transformed the red-and-yellow exterior into its signature white with red and black accents for this weekend's opening. Asghedom says the team will serve a pared-down menu with smash burgers, hot wings, and a vegan patty. They'll also debut a new double cheeseburger with grilled onions, lettuce, Fresno peppers, pickles, ketchup, mustard, and a proprietary sauce. Breakfast will run from 7 a.m. until noon, with French toast waffles, a breakfast sandwich, orange juice, and coffee; ice cream, a boardwalk favorite, will be served daily. The Venice location will omit the salads, mushroom burger, and milkshakes served at Melrose to help eliminate long wait times. Outdoor seating is available.
Asghedom and Hussle grew up working in a family restaurant. Hussle launched his Marathon brand in 2010 and was active in opening businesses in Los Angeles until he was murdered in 2019. Fans have long appreciated Hussle's focus on economic independence for Black entrepreneurs — the Marathon brand is music, fashion, entertainment, and restaurants. Asghedom says that future locations are in the works. 'We have a location we're eyeing, but I don't know if it will be location four or five. We're trying to figure out the best strategic location,' says Asghedom.
The Venice Beach Boardwalk consistently has its share of restaurant flips and closures. After the Window closed, it became the vegan fast-food restaurant Mr. Charlie's, which eventually split into a group of adjacent restaurants that opened in early 2025: Epic Taco, Ubatuba Açaí, Mr. B's Mediterranean Grill, and Cane Man. In its new location at one of Southern California's most famous tourist draws, Marathon Burger has a good chance of being embraced by Venice locals and travelers during the high-volume, fast-paced summer season.
Starting May 31, 2025, Marathon Burger Venice will operate from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. with late-night delivery from 10 p.m. until 3 a.m. at 1827 Oceanfront Walk, Venice, CA, 90291.

Sony Touts ‘Strong' Marathon Engagement, Confirms Release Window

Marathon The future of Marathon after the last month or so feels rather unsteady, but in a new SIE presentation, Sony is reinforcing that it's an important game in its lineup, and it's projecting confidence. Sony's Herman Hulst took some time during his overview of PlayStation's offerings to single Marathon out as 'an innovative and bold take on the extraction shooter genre.' This was joined by a slide that under the banner 'FY25 Focus,' which said that there is 'Strong early engagement for Bungie's bold and innovative new title.' Marathon If you've been following the saga of Marathon, all this is a bit eyebrow-raising. For starters, at least the presentation reinforces a window for Marathon, Fiscal Year 2025, in a time when most players believe it will be delayed out of its current September 23, 2024 release date. FY25 ends in March 2026, so it would not be something huge like a year delay. Even six months is pushing it, so if there is one, it would not be all that long, and you would wonder what might be able to be changed or fixed in that time. That leads to the next aspect of this, this supposed 'strong engagement.' Sure, there's been strong engagement, but that consists of a lot of negativity about its gameplay reveal, then an overwhelming sense that the Closed Alpha was underwhelming, then an industry-wide scandal where it was revealed that plagiarized art had made it through the game's pipeline over a number of years and had ended up in the game itself. So yes, there was 'engagement.' FEATURED | Frase ByForbes™ Unscramble The Anagram To Reveal The Phrase Pinpoint By Linkedin Guess The Category Queens By Linkedin Crown Each Region Crossclimb By Linkedin Unlock A Trivia Ladder Either Sony is completely divorced from the online conversation surrounding Marathon, or they see where things are headed and feel forced to project strength regardless. Saying nothing about Marathon or waffling on it here would do nothing to help them or the game so of course, yes, you say you believe in the game, even if you're dancing around what's actually happening by bragging about 'engagement.' But internally, even Bungie is extremely concerned about where things are, and where things are going from here. Live services The chart of Sony's live service prospects is bleak. There's no real getting around that. It considers its eternal baseball game, The Show, a live service. Destiny 2 has been bleeding players and is now entering a very risky new era that seems unlikely to return the game to its glory days. Marathon is on the edge of oblivion at this point. It's hilarious they're even saying Fairgames is still actually coming out. The unequivocal bright spot here is Helldivers 2, which has been true since it launched. But its developer, Arrowhead, will not be working with Sony for its next game. Over the course of the past two months, I have arrived at the conclusion that Marathon is just not going to work. The vibes are awful, the problems with the game are mostly etched in stone, and now we have an art theft scandal on top of that. I do expect a delay to be announced, but it won't be lengthy, and I do not believe this is going to be the release that both Sony and Bungie need, whatever they're saying in their slideshow. Restaurant charges $17 fee for customers who commit this common dining practice: ‘Going a bit far'

People are expressing 'reservations' about this new policy. A French restaurateur has been ripped online after announcing a new fine on dining parties whose number of members didn't match their original booking. Olivier Vincent, chef and manager at L'îlot in Amboise, had reportedly become fed up with parties that either exceeded or fell short of the number of patrons they had reserved for, local media reported. Advertisement The problem — which reportedly occurred on a 'weekly' basis, per the boss — was particularly damaging as his venue only has 20 seats. 4 L'îlot (pictured) currently boasts a respectable 4.7 stars on Google, where it's described as serving 'inventive gourmet plates prepared in a down-to-earth restaurant with an open kitchen.' The Island Restaurant / Facebook Vincent announced in a Facebook post, which has garnered 27,000 views in the first 24 hours, that diners who fail to arrive with the number of guests specified on their reservation 'will be charged 15 euros ($17.27) per missing or additional person.' Advertisement 'Thank you for your understanding,' the Frenchman wrote. 'We're here because we need to make people responsible.' L'îlot currently boasts a respectable 4.7 stars on Google, where it's described as serving 'inventive gourmet plates prepared in a down-to-earth restaurant with an open kitchen.' 4 'From now on, if you do not come with the number of guests for which you reserved, you will be charged 15 euros per missing or additional person,' Vincent announced in the Facebook post (pictured). The Island Restaurant / Facebook According to Vincent, the incorrect booking issue had been ongoing since COVID, but things came to a head last Sunday when one customer exchanged multiple messages trying to change the booking. Advertisement 'After about ten emails with one person, she told us there would be eight, then nine, and finally, they arrived at seven without warning, without apology,' he recalled. 4 The incorrect reservation issue had been piling up since the COVID-19 pandemic, per Vincent. Scott Griessel – Vincent said there's no excuse for this mistake in a day and age where 'everyone has their phone on them, 24/7, in their pocket.' 'If we are able to reserve, we are able to call to say if we will be less, or more, or that we are not coming,' he declared. Advertisement 'If we are here, it is to work. It is not to have tables, not to have customers,' Vincent vented. 'We organize ourselves so that everything is serene. We have staff. We work with fresh products. We do not pay employees and suppliers with Monopoly tickets. My restaurant is a business.' 4 The issue was particularly damaging as the venue (pictured) only has 20 seats. The Island Restaurant / Facebook However, the policy received mixed reviews with some critics claiming that it was unfair to diners who had to cancel last-minute due to unforeseen circumstances. 'A bit of a limiting business practice if there are only one or two people missing from a large table,' said one. 'Emergencies exist. You're not going to get great publicity for yourself.' They added, 'Even if abuses exist, you are going a bit far. Imagine an on-call doctor who can't join their family for dinner, or someone who has a family emergency.' 'A last-minute unforeseen event,' said another. 'Getting left outside the restaurant (it's happened to me before)… Well, I might as well go somewhere else then. It seems pretty counterproductive to me.' However, many were on board with the issue, which they felt was the perfect antidote to an epidemic of inconsiderate diners. Advertisement 'I think it's completely normal, people just have to give enough notice, it's a lack of good manners, that's what reservations are for,' said one defender. 'You have guests, you count 8 people, two don't come without warning, you've done the shopping and the cooking accordingly.' They added, 'Personally, the next time I don't invite them. This is his livelihood, he loses two places, so I completely understand his approach.' Meanwhile, a fellow restaurateur claimed that 'this kind of situation has unfortunately become commonplace.' 'Between phantom reservations, last-minute cancellations, and customers arriving very late hoping to be served anyway, it's become a real headache,' they wrote. 'For a small establishment, every table counts. Service isn't just about dishes coming out, it's about meticulous organization, a kitchen team, precise timing—and when things go off the rails because of careless behavior, the loss of revenue is very real.'
