Diamonds star wants golden end to Vixens netball season

West Australian24-05-2025
The tiny West Australian mining town of Kambalda has unearthed two gems with Diamonds and Vixens netball star Sophie Garbin still shining bright.
Garbin is set to play her 100th Super Netball match on Sunday while her older sister Darcee turned out for the Opals before taking her basketball career overseas.
Located 60 kilometres from Kalgoorlie and more than 600km from Perth, and with a population of less than 3000, Kambalda amazingly also produced three football players who made it into the AFLW.
With sport pretty much all that was on offer and coached by her mum Kym, whom she credits for her athleticism, Garbin said she played both netball and basketball and almost followed her sister's path.
"I always grew up wanting to be Lauren Jackson and going to the Olympics, and in a way I have kind of achieved that going to the World Cup with the Diamonds," Garbin told AAP.
"I wasn't actually that tall when I was younger and I didn't have very good ball skills - my brother and sister used to watch me play and tease me how I used to do lay-up.
"But I probably had more friends in netball and there was probably a little bit of me that didn't want to do the same thing as my sister."
The 28-year-old goal shooter proved she made the right choice, winning two Super Netball titles with NSW before moving to Melbourne to join the now-defunct Collingwood.
When the Magpies folded she signed with Melbourne Vixens with the team losing a grand final battle to Adelaide last year.
Garbin also shone on the international stage and was rewarded with the Liz Ellis Diamond as Australia's best player.
This season the Vixens have struggled to find their groove and sit second last with two wins from six matches.
But a win in Brisbane over the sixth-ranked Queensland Firebirds could see them jump to fifth, with the top four playing finals.
Looking to send departing coach Simone McKinnis out a winner, Garbin said she still felt positive about their 2025 season and had extra motivation with Melbourne hosting the grand final.
"We're just not playing our best," she said.
"It'd be a bit more disheartening if we felt like we were giving it our all and still losing, but I don't think we've had all 10 of us firing at the same time.
"I still feel quite positive, like I've been at many different clubs and have had different seasons, and sometimes successes come later on in the season.
"We're two and four, but that doesn't mean the season's over.
"Our mindset going into this weekend is just focusing on beating the Firebirds rather than looking too far ahead and looking into finals, but I'm still very much thinking that we're playing finals and we're not out of the race just yet."

AFL Draft: West Coast Next Generation Academy prospect Koby Evans to miss season with syndesmosis injury

Top West Coast Next Generation Academy prospect Koby Evans is facing the possibility of surgery after scans revealed he sustained a syndesmosis injury while playing for Perth on Saturday. Evans injured his ankle in the final quarter of the Demons' 13-point loss to Claremont at Mineral Resources Park and had scans on Sunday to determine the extent of the injury. The 17-year-old will miss the rest of the season, a blow for the exciting potential draftee given he was set to play a part in Perth's finals campaign. Evans will find out later this week if he requires surgery, which could force him to miss the National Draft Combine which begins on October 3 in Melbourne. It's a blow for the talented forward-midfielder who missed WA's Under-18 National Championships campaign with a stress-related injury in his back. Evans returned to the field earlier this month with 25 disposals and seven in the colts, before making his league debut in Perth's round 18 win over Peel Thunder down in Mandurah. He is the second Eagles NGA prospect to sustain a season-ending injury after The West Australian revealed last week exciting Swan Districts forward Tylah Williams wouldn't play again in 2025 after he injured his hand while training at the AFL club. Williams had an impressive WAFL league debut for the Eagles with 12 disposals, three tackles and a goal against East Perth in round 17. The 18-year-old played two games for the West Coast reserves and was set to line up against them and play league football for Swan Districts on Saturday before the untimely injury. Meanwhile, Claremont forward Cody Curtin is a chance to return after missing the past month with shin splints. Curtin last played in round 15 when he kicked six goals for the Tigers in a victory over Subiaco down in Albany.

Pick up the phone, Popa: Socceroos could lose another rising star to Croatia

Five months ago, Adrian Segecic sent a clear message to Socceroos coach Tony Popovic, delivered with the subtlety of a sledgehammer ... which, incidentally, is also how he describes his left foot. Segecic celebrated one of his 17 goals last season for Sydney FC by raising his thumb and pinkie finger to his ear as if to mime a phone call, just days after being contentiously overlooked for an international call-up. He still hasn't spoken to Popovic. And now Australian fans aren't the only ones worried they could lose him. Supporters of Segecic's new club are already bracing for him to be poached by a Premier League club amid the 21-year-old's sensational start to life in the English Championship, scoring two goals and setting up another in his first three games for Portsmouth. That form will surely be rewarded with a spot in Popovic's squad for the upcoming Soccer Ashes series against New Zealand, due to be unveiled late next week - and that's his first preference, but Segecic is also keeping the door ajar to a possible switch of allegiance to Croatia. 'I haven't heard anything yet,' he told this masthead. 'Obviously, I've played for the Aussies in every age group, so to play for the Socceroos in a World Cup would be a dream. If that's what Popa wants, if I'm welcomed into the Socceroos, definitely. It's a goal [of mine] … with the World Cup coming up as well, it would be unbelievable to have a good season here in England and follow it up with the World Cup. So it's definitely the plan. 'But we'll see what happens. The Croatian national team is there ... being in Europe, being in the UK, I think everything's a lot closer.'
