Record-breaking indoor solar cells pave way for battery-free future

A team led by scientists at University College London (UCL) said the breakthrough could lead to a battery-free future where devices such as remote controls and headphones are powered solely by ambient light.
Perovskite has been hailed for its potential to revolutionise renewable energy due to its remarkable properties, which allow it to convert light into electricity far more efficiently than conventional silicon solar cells.
Perovskite solar cells are also low-cost and can be produced easily. However, the presence of high-density traps can disrupt the flow of charge and cause energy to be lost as heat.
By introducing the chemical rubidium chloride, the UCL researchers were able to reduce the density of these traps and break the world record for harvesting indoor light.
Tests of the new solar cells found that they could convert 37.6pc of indoor light into electricity, while also retaining more than 90pc of their performance after 100 days.
'Currently, solar cells capturing energy from indoor light are expensive and inefficient,' Dr Mojtaba Abdi Jalebi, an associate professor at the UCL Institute for Materials Discovery, said.

Nowadays, companies use dye-­sensitised solar cells to power electronics from light sources ranging from sunlight to candlelight.
One of the world's largest producers is Stockholm-based Exeger, whose Powerfoyle solar cells are flexible and durable enough to be embedded in bike helmets, leather bags and Bluetooth speakers. The skin-like material is ­waterproof, dustproof and shockproof. However, it does not offer the same efficiency levels that UCL produced with perovskite in the lab.
The UCL researchers are currently exploring ways to commercialise the technology with various industry partners.
The breakthrough was published in the journal Advanced Functional Materials, in a study titled 'Enhancing indoor photovoltaic efficiency to 37.6pc through triple passivation reassembly and n-type to p-type modulation in wide bandgap perovskites'.

Granite said the acquisition of Zesty reinforces the firm's position as Ireland's largest independent digital agency, and expands its geographic footprint. The combined group has 170 employees and more than 1,200 clients. Conor Buckley, the CEO of Granite Digital, said the acquisition of Zesty is another 'transformative milestone' for the company. 'This deal strengthens our ability to deliver end-to-end digital solutions while expanding our technical expertise and geographic reach,' he said. Granite Digital has made a number of acquisitions in the past. Last year, it bought Limerick-based data science and digital marketing firm Coalface, and Dublin-based digital design agency Wondr. That added companies including An Post and the ESB to Granite's client list. In 2023, Granite bought Galway-based digital design firm Armour, and acquired a majority stake in New York-based creative agency LCM247. In June 2024, the company announced plans to create 50 jobs in New York by 2027 as it expands its business there.

THE GOVERNMENT'S NEW data centre has been delivered on time and on budget. This afternoon, Minister of State with special responsibility for Public Procurement, Digitalisation and eGovernment Emer Higgins, paid a visit to the new Government Data Centre at Backweston in Co Kildare. Construction on the data centre began in 2023 and was completed last month. However, work is still underway on the internal fit-out, which is due to be completed by the end of the year. This state-of-the-art building was developed under the European Union's recovery plan, NextGenerationEU. This recovery plan provides financial aid to EU States to combat the economic and social effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and make the European economy 'more resistant to future shocks'. Advertisement Ireland's allocation is €1.15 billion, and the government submitted its third payment request, with a value of €240 million, earlier this week. Ireland has already received its first and second payments of €324 million and €115 million respectively. The third payment request includes the expansion of the rehabilitation of peatlands, as well as further works on electrification of the transport networks in Cork and Drogheda. Meanwhile, a government spokesperson said that the new data centre will 'provide secure operations that will future proof the reliable delivery of essential digital services to the public'. Once the fit-out of the building is complete, the migration of services to the new facility is scheduled to begin early next year. Higgins said Backweston Data Centre is a 'fantastic example of how the NextGenerationEU funding is delivering real, tangible results'. She said the fact that the 'complex' build was completed on time and on budget is a 'testament to the skill and dedication of everyone involved'. She said the new data centre will use the 'latest and most efficient technologies to ensure that vital Government data is stored in a secure and energy-efficient way'. She also described it as a 'significant step forward in our digital transformation journey' and that it will 'ultimately help us to provide better public services'. AN IRISH solar panel firm has furthered its plans to expand within Britain with the acquisition of a renewable energy company in Lancashire. Activ8 Solar Energies, which is based in Co. Monaghan, has moved for Burnley-based firm Low Carbon Energy as part of plans to secure more commercial infrastructure projects in Britain. It follows the Irish firm's recent work on a £3m solar farm at John Lennon Airport in Liverpool that will provide 25 per cent of the airport's electricity when it goes live next month. "This acquisition marks a transformative moment for Activ8 as we accelerate our UK growth ambitions," said CEO Ciarán Marron. "By combining the strengths of Activ8 and Low Carbon Energy, we're better equipped than ever to deliver innovative, large-scale energy solutions for clients seeking sustainable energy security. "Low Carbon Energy's impressive track record, technical capability and prestigious client base complement our vision perfectly. "Together, we're poised to scale nationwide and play a central role in supporting the UK's transition to a low-carbon economy." Activ8 — which is 50 per cent owned by SSE Airtricity, an Irish subsidiary of SSE — is planning to double turnover and installed solar capacity over the next few years as it sets its sights on expanding beyond Ireland. It aims to become the biggest commercial and industrial renewable energy provider in Britain. The solar sector is going from strength-to-strength in Britain thanks in part to the popularity of power purchase agreements. The funding model, which allows companies to install solar at no cost, has become an important lever in rolling out solar generation in commercial and industrial sites nationwide. 'Exciting step forward' Low Carbon Energy will continue operating under its existing brand in the near term, ensuring continuity for its existing customers while benefiting from Activ8's resources and scale. Founded in 2009 by Ged and Maura Ennis, the company has worked across more than 300 sites nationwide, delivering more than 60MW of installed solar capacity. Its client portfolio includes BMW, Porsche, Co-op, Boeing, Drax Power, Tata Steel, Wickes, United Utilities and the NHS. It opened an office in Galway in 2015. As part of the deal, Activ8 has acquired 100 per cent of LCE's shareholding. Benedict Ennis will continue to lead the business as Managing Director, while founder Ged Ennis will remain as a non-executive director, providing strategic guidance as the business enters its next phase of growth.
