Umno leaves issue of alleged corrupt assemblymen in MACC hands

KOTA KINABALU: Umno trusts the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission in its investigations into alleged corruption involving Sabah assemblymen over the issuance of mineral exploration licenses in the state.
Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said MACC was taking action based on strong information and credible witnesses, while the assemblymen have the right to present evidence in court to clear their names.
"We place our trust in enforcement agencies, especially the MACC, not only to conduct investigations but to gather reliable evidence and witnesses.
"If these two elements exist, then charges can be filed, and we trust the MACC to take the necessary action.
"If an individual has witnesses and evidence to refute the prosecution's case, then they should clear their name in court," he told reporters after opening the Sabah Women Empowerment Programme here today.
Zahid was responding to questions regarding Umno's stance on MACC's move to detain two Sabah assemblymen, who were later released on bail, one last Wednesday and another yesterday.
Also detained was a businessman Datuk who was linked to videos exposing the corruption scandal. He too was later released on bail.
All are expected to be charged by the end of the month, MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki had said.
It is understood that one of the assemblymen is a state assistant minister while the other serves as the chairman of a Sabah government-linked company (GLC).
Yesterday, Tanjung Batu assemblyman and Kalabakan member of parliament Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy was reportedly among those called by the MACC to provide a statement in connection with the case.
He is an Umno member who had his membership suspended after defying Sabah Umno's decision to withdraw from cooperation with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in January 2023.
Zahid confirmed that Andi was still suspended.

No Barisan-Pakatan clashes in Sabah polls, says Ahmad Zahid

SHAH ALAM: Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says seat distribution between the coalition and Pakatan Harapan for the upcoming Sabah state polls has been finalised, with no overlaps. Ahmad Zahid, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, further informed that no negotiations have been held between Barisan and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) regarding seat distribution or cooperation for the state election, in order to respect Pakatan. However, Ahmad Zahid anticipated that at least three-cornered contests would be unavoidable, following the likelihood of participation from other and new parties. "What has been finalised is Barisan-Pakatan, and we respect Pakatan-GRS. There are no direct negotiations between Barisan and GRS. So far, any other discussions to avoid three-cornered contests or seat overlaps have been conducted behind the scenes. "However, I feel that since there are too many new parties in Sabah wanting to contest this time, three-cornered fights will certainly be unavoidable, possibly up to eight-cornered. That is up to them, as that is the political landscape in Sabah. BN-PH has no overlapping seats,' he said. He said this when met after attending the 16th National-Level Civil Defence Student Corps (Kor Sispa) Training Completion Parade and Commissioning Ceremony here on Saturday (Aug 16). Ahmad Zahid was earlier reported as saying that negotiations on cooperation and seat distribution within the BN, PH, and GRS alliance for the state election were nearly completed. - Bernama

Zahid: Don't take members from coalition partners

SHAH ALAM: Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has verbally reminded Unity Government parties to uphold the convention of not accepting members from other component parties. Zahid, who is also Barisan Nasional chairman, said a protest note was being prepared to be sent to parties that have admitted Umno members. "The protest note is a decision of the Umno Supreme Council. We have long stated that parties in the Unity Government should not accept members from other component parties. "This must be respected; it is a convention that should be honoured by every party in the coalition. "The note is being prepared, but I have already conveyed this verbally to the respective party presidents," he said. Zahid, who is the deputy prime minister, told reporters this after attending the 16th National Civil Defence Student Corps Commissioning ceremony. His comments follow news that Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz had his application to join PKR accepted. Zafrul resigned as an Umno Supreme Council member and Kota Raja division chief on May 30. Earlier, Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the party would submit protest notes to coalition partners that had admitted or planned to admit former Umno members. He said the move was a stern warning to safeguard ties within the Unity Government. Asyraf said the decision was made at the Supreme Council meeting held on Aug 13.

Tok Mat calls for calm over flag issue

Mohd Amin Jalil SEREMBAN: Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has called for calm over the issue of an upside-down national flag. "Every action leads to a reaction. We don't want things to get out of hand," said Mohamad, who is also the foreign minister. Speaking on the sidelines of the Rembau Umno divisional meeting, Mohamad said it was important that all parties avoid causing tension that could threaten national harmony. Mohamad, who is commonly known as Tok Mat, was commenting on the ongoing war of words between Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh and several DAP leaders over the matter. On Thursday, Dr Akmal led more than 300 supporters from Umno, Bersatu, and Pas in a 1.4km march to protest a hardware store that had displayed the Jalur Gemilang upside down. This prompted criticism from DAP leaders who accused Dr Akmal of bullying and intimidation. The party's secretary-general, Anthony Loke, also called on DAP members to lodge police reports against Dr Akmal. There were also calls from DAP Socialist Youth leaders for the party to sever ties with Dr Akmal. Police are investigating Dr Akmal for sedition, criminal intimidation, and misuse of network facilities to transmit offensive content. Mohamad said any action taken in relation to the issue must be fair, and this included action against those who hoisted the flag wrongly. The store owner, Pang Chin Tian, who is being investigated by the police, has apologised for the incident last Saturday, saying it was unintentional.
