Tough-guy actor Joe Don Baker, a prolific performer in movies as varied as GoldenEye, Cape Fear and Mud, as well as the BBC TV series Edge of Darkness, has died aged 89.
Born in 1936, Baker grew up in small town Texas, and studied business administration at North Texas State College. After a period in the army, Baker moved to New York and joined the Actors' Studio in the early 1960s, where he was a contemporary of Rip Torn. Baker made his Broadway debut in 1963 with the Actors' Studio company, appearing in Marathon '33, about the dance marathons of the Great Depression, and made his film debut in an uncredited role in 1967 in Cool Hand Luke. He also appeared in numerous TV series, including the pilot episode of a western show called Lancer in 1968, the making of which was fictionalised by Quentin Tarantino in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, with Leonardo DiCaprio's Rick Dalton in Baker's role.
However it was a role as Steve McQueen's character's brother Curley in Sam Peckinpah's 1972 rodeo drama Junior Bonner that got Baker noticed. He was then cast in a rare lead role, as real-life lawman/vigilante Buford Pusser in 1973 film Walking Tall, directed by Phil Karlson; it became a surprise hit and Baker followed it up with other hard-bitten crime films including Charley Varrick, directed by Don Siegel, and The Outfit opposite Robert Duvall and Karen Black.
Baker had more lead roles in the late 70s, but remained better known as a reliable supporting actor in the following decade, appearing in baseball drama The Natural (as 'the Whammer', modelled on Babe Ruth), Chevy Chase detective comedy Fletch and thriller Getting Even. In 1985 Baker was cast as CIA agent Darius Jedburgh in Edge of Darkness, the landmark political thriller TV series starring Bob Peck and Joanne Whalley.
Baker's performance in Edge of Darkness got him attention from the producers of the 1987 Bond film The Living Daylights, in which he was cast as arms dealer Brad Whitaker. Baker would make the rare switch from Bond villain to Bond good guy when he was cast in 1995 in GoldenEye as helpful CIA agent Jack Wade, a role he reprised in Tomorrow Never Dies.
A stream of smaller roles kept him busy, appearing in Martin Scorsese's Cape Fear remake, Gen X satire Reality Bites, and Steven Soderbergh's noir drama The Underneath. He later appeared in the feature film version of The Dukes of Hazzard and his final film role in Mud, which starred Matthew McConaughey, after which he retired.
Baker was married to Marlo Baker between 1969 and 1980, and is not known to have had any children.

Star Trek actor reveals more details about Quentin Tarantino's abandoned film

Simon Pegg revealed that Quentin Tarantino 's unmade Star Trek film would have been "bats*** crazy," fitting expectations for a Tarantino project. Pegg, who portrays Montgomery "Scotty" Scott, was given a detailed description of the R-rated script by JJ Abrams and producer Lindsey Weber, though he never read it. Tarantino successfully pitched the film in 2017 but later distanced himself from the project, which was never officially greenlit. Pegg previously indicated that the Star Trek film franchise might be over due to high production costs and lower box office returns compared to other major franchises. However, Pegg now expresses hope for another film following the merger between Paramount and Skydance, as Skydance founder David Ellison supports the Kelvin timeline.

Kim Kardashian's hairstylist Chris Appleton thrown thinly-veiled dig by White Lotus star ex-husband

Chris Appleton's ex-husband had a scathing retort to news of the hairstylist's new self-help book this week. White Lotus star Lukas Gage, 30, who split from Kim Kardashian's BFF, 42, in November 2023 after just six months of marriage, weighed in on Appleton's new tome, Your Roots Don't Define You in a candid chat with TMZ. Gage is set to publish his own memoir, I Wrote This For Attention, in October, a mere three months before Appleton's - and said: 'I'm honored to be influential on someone else's release date of their book.' When quizzed about the close release dates of the book, Gage said: 'Maybe it's coincidental.' Lukas and Chris wed in front of only six guests at Little White Chapel after applying for a marriage license in Clark County. It was the same wedding venue where Kourtney Kardashian & Travis Barker, Joe Jonas & Sophie Turner, Bruce Willis & Demi Moore, and Frank Sinatra & Mia Farrow previously walked down the aisle. Two of the other guests were Appleton's two children - 22-year-old son Billy and 20-year-old daughter Kitty-blu - whom he welcomed with Leicester salon owner Katie Katon before he came out as homosexual at age 26. Gage and Appleton made their romance public in February 2023 when they shared vacation snaps from The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort in Mexico. 'I'm very happy. Very much in love. And I feel very grateful to be able to share my time with someone very special,' Appleton gushed on The Drew Barrymore Show on March 17. 'Love is a really special thing and I think meeting someone that you really connect with is really really special.' In turn Gage said he felt 'very happy, very lucky, and very much in love' while appearing on the March 27th episode of TODAY. 'He's a good-looking man. Something about being in London, I got a taste of the Brits and couldn't help myself.' Gage is known for his role as Dillon on season one of The White Lotus, Adam Pratt on season four of You and Tyler Clarkson on Euphoria. He also has a recurring role as Lars Olmstead in the 2019-set fifth season of kidnapping black comedy Fargo, which premieres later this year on FX. Meanwhile, Chris has a client list that includes Kardashian, Daytime Emmy-nominated host Drew Barrymore, two-time Grammy nominee Jennifer Lopez, and three-time Grammy winner Dua Lipa. They wed in Vegas in April 2023 with Kardashian officiating. She also organized for music superstar Shania Twain to serenade the couple. Shania sang: 'Chris, Lukas, looks like you made it, get over here, let's do this.' Both Chris and Lukas said: 'We love you!' as Shania broke into her 1997 classic You're Still The One.

Taylor Swift shows off $40k worth of jewelry on Kelce's podcast

Taylor Swift will never go out of style - as she showed off $40,000 worth of classic jewelry from Cartier in a sneak preview for her upcoming appearance on boyfriend Travis Kelce 's New Heights podcast. On Monday night, Swift revealed that she would be dropping her twelfth studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, which she announced in a preview clip for New Heights. In the video, it showed the pop star sharing the news with Travis' brother, Jason, who he co-hosts the podcast with. 'So I wanted to show you something,' Taylor said as she sat next to Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis. She then pulled out a white case with 'TS' written on the side in orange block letters. 'This is my brand-new album, The Life Of A Showgirl,' Taylor said proudly as she held up a vinyl version of the album, which was censored in the video. Travis' brother Jason Kelce let out a piercing scream of joy as soon as the album title escaped her lips. 'TS 12!' Travis cheered excitedly, referencing The Life Of A Showgirl's status as her twelfth studio album, as the announcement clip came to an abrupt end. Another teaser clip showed Taylor and Travis enjoying a flirty conversation before they started recording for the show, as he called her 'sweetie.' In addition to the album announcement, it looks like Taylor has already made a splash for her New Heights debut, as she can be seen wearing a fancy watch and necklace worth $40,000 as she sat beside her man. Around her neck, the Bad Blood singer could be seen sporting a Panthère de Cartier Necklace from the famed Cartier, which features their signature panther in gold. Taylor's version of the necklace was encrusted with diamonds, and it will cost you a pretty penny at $22,500. But that wasn't the only bling she showed off. Taylor also wore a gold Santos Demoiselle Watch by Cartier, which costs $18,330, according to the Taylor Swift Styled Instagram page. The watch's face is decorated with small diamonds and features an elegant square timepiece. In total, her jewelry costs $40,830 - which might not be much for the star, who is worth $1.6 billion. Taylor seems to be a big fan of Cartier, as she has been spotted in other pieces by the high-end jeweler. While supporting Kelce during a December 2023 Kansas City Chiefs game, she wore an 18 karat Agrafe Herringbone twisted necklace was made by Cartier in the 1980s. Though it is no longer available at Cartier, it can be purchased on secondhand retail sites like 1stDibs for $35,000.
