Bahrain Brings DEF CON to GCC

Daily Tribune26-06-2025
Bahrain is set to make regional history as it welcomes DEF CON, one of the world's most respected cybersecurity conferences, for the first time in the Arab world. The event is being held through a strategic partnership with the Arab International Cybersecurity Conference & Exhibition (AICS).
The third edition of AICS will take place on November 5th and 6th at Exhibition World Bahrain, under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister. Hosted by the National Cyber Security Center (NCSC), the event will bring together global cybersecurity experts, decision-makers, and industry leaders.
Landmark Partnership
This year's edition marks a pivotal moment, with Bahrain becoming the first country in the Arab region to collaborate formally with DEF CON. Organisers say the move will significantly raise the technical calibre of the event while offering a new level of interactivity and innovation to attendees.
As part of this partnership, AICS will introduce interactive DEF CON Villages focused on emerging security domains such as artificial intelligence, industrial control systems, cloud technologies, and space cybersecurity.
Participants will also experience cutting-edge Demo Labs where students, researchers, and startups can showcase cybersecurity tools and ideas directly to global experts. The goal, organisers said, is to nurture talent and encourage disruptive thinking across sectors.
Beyond demonstrations, the two-day summit will feature technical workshops, specialised training, high-level panel discussions, and an expansive tech exhibition led by top cybersecurity firms worldwide.
Bahrain's Cyber Role
Officials say the event strengthens Bahrain's growing reputation as a cybersecurity leader in the region, offering a collaborative platform for public-private dialogue and high-level strategy sharing.
The partnership between AICS and DEF CON positions the Kingdom at the forefront of regional cyber capability-building and knowledge exchange.

Israel to partially reopen Gaza private goods trade

Undefined Israel will partially reopen private sector trade with Gaza to reduce its reliance on humanitarian aid, the defence ministry civil affairs agency for the Palestinian territories said on Tuesday. 'As part of formulating the mechanism, a limited number of local merchants were approved by the defence establishment, subject to several criteria and strict security screening,' COGAT said. Israel has been fighting Hamas in Gaza for 22 months and imposed a total blockade on March 2, partially lifted in May to allow a US-backed private agency to open food distribution centres. Aid convoys and airdrops by Arab and European militaries resumed last month, as UN-mandated expert reports warned famine was unfolding in the war-torn territory. The COGAT statement said private sector deliveries would be paid for by monitored bank transfers and be subject to inspections by the Israeli military before entering Gaza, 'to prevent the involvement of the Hamas terrorist organisation'. Permitted goods under the new mechanism will include food staples, fruit, vegetables, baby formula and hygiene products, COGAT said. The agency said more than 300 aid trucks entered Gaza on Monday, a larger number than in previous days, and that hundreds more were 'still queued up for UN pickup'.

Online investment scam

A ruling is expected on 26 August in the case of three defendants, two Arab and one foreign, along with their company, accused of laundering nearly BD500,000 linked to a series of online frauds. Prosecutors say the accused lured victims through online adverts claiming to offer investment opportunities in cryptocurrency, stock trading and gold. People transferred money, believing they were securing future profits, only to realise later that the entire operation was a sham. The Financial Intelligence National Centre (FINC), drawing on confidential sources, identified a company established by the second and third defendants. It was registered as a gold investment business but is believed to have served as the main vehicle for the fraud. The group allegedly ran online campaigns promising stable returns, backed by doctored images of growing financial portfolios sent to reassure investors. Investigators estimate that over BD400,000 were collected. The money was then sent out of Bahrain and converted into cryptocurrency, with the aim of concealing its origin. Transfers were carried out through several overseas banks. The matter came to the attention of the authorities after a number of victims filed complaints. Each had responded to adverts, deposited funds and later found themselves ignored. The court is due to rule on the charges against the three accused and their company later this month.
