Jesse Lingard's grandad to face retrial over alleged child sex offences
Jesse Lingard's 86-year-old grandad, Kenneth, will be back in court next year, having been charged with indecent assaults on a woman, who claimed that he'd abused her from the age of five
The grandfather of footballer Jesse Lingard will face a retrial on charges of historic sexual abuse. Kenneth Lingard, 86, stood trial at Liverpool Crown Court charged with indecent assaults on a woman who claimed he abused her from the age of five.
The jury in his trial was discharged earlier this month, it can now be reported. On Monday, Judge Katherine Pierpoint fixed a retrial for May 11 next year.
During the trial, the court heard the complainant contacted police after watching a documentary in which former Manchester United player Lingard spoke about the positive influence his grandfather had on his career. The footballer travelled from South Korea, where he plays for FC Seoul, to give evidence as part of his grandfather's defence case.
The jury was told the woman contacted the former England international in November 2022 after watching Channel 4 documentary Untold: The Jesse Lingard Story. In a message, she said to him: 'Shame on you Jesse Lingard. Loads of lies. Your grandad Kenneth Lingard molested and sexually abused me and you know he did.'
Lingard told the court he had not heard about the allegations before. He said: 'I would have cut ties with him straight away.' Kenneth Lingard told the court the abuse 'never happened.'
Lingard, who wore a black suit with a white shirt and black tie, said last month when asked if the trial had caused him difficulties: 'A few sponsorship deals in Korea have fell through. I've had to hold off on some more sponsorship deals in Korea at the moment.'
The 32-year-old also replied when asked why he made the documentary: 'I made it for mental health reasons and just to show my family, show people how footballers live. At the end of the day, we're all human. To share that footage and to have my family in it was amazing.'
Lingard told the court about his grandfather: 'He basically taught me football, taught all the skills, drove me up and down motorways from Liverpool to Manchester, Crewe, Barnsley, Stoke, to watch me play football. He's been the man that's got me here today.'
The midfielder joined Korean side Seoul in February 2024 and has played all 13 of their K League 1 matches this season. Lingard has four goals and one assist.
He moved to Asia following a spell with Nottingham Forest in the 2022-23 season, having been released by United. Lingard joined the club aged seven and spent two decades there.

EXCLUSIVE Daniel Bedingfield breaks 10-year silence to slam Leigh Francis for claiming he was DEAD on Celebrity Juice telling the Keith Lemon comic 'f*** you'
Leigh Francis has been blasted by another of his comedy victims, who claims the controversial comic went 'too far' with an outrageous death 'gag.' Chat show host Trisha Goddard and singer Craig David have previously slammed the Bo' Selecta! creator, 52, for his offensive portrayals of the pair on his Channel 4 series. Plus ex-TV host Melanie Sykes also hit out at Leigh for making personal remarks about her during an appearance on ITV series Through The Keyhole, which he hosted in the guise of another of his alter egos, Keith Lemon. And now 10 years after the comic claimed he had passed away while appearing on ITV2 's Celebrity Juice, also in the guise of Lemon, singer Daniel Bedingfield has broken his silence and slated Leigh for the impact the viral gag had on his family. The Gotta Get Thru This hitmaker, who was a showbiz recluse at the time, revealed many loved ones feared Leigh's claim was true and the 'joke' caused much distress. Daniel, who referred to Leigh by the name of another of his comic creations - Avid Merrion, accused the funnyman of taking great 'delight' in tricking the public he had passed away. He said: 'The delight in Avid Merrion telling people I was dead - f**k you, Avid Merrion. 'All my friends called me saying, are you dead? Not cool, man. 'He said I was dead as a human, it's not cool bro. It's too far.' Speaking on the Nicky Byrne HQ podcast, Daniel, 45, added Leigh was part of a culture who enjoyed 'taking down' celebrities and lauded one of his other targets, 7 Days singer Craig, for speaking out about it. He said: 'There's a delight in taking apart the people we respect in Britain, tearing people down. Craig's been really open about that.' Leigh's gag went viral shortly after it was mentioned on Celebrity Juice, which was axed after 14 years in 2022. Daniel became one of the most searched artists on Google in 2015, due to fans desperately trying to find out if Leigh's claim was true. The joke was particularly sensitive for Daniel given he nearly lost his life for real in 2004 following a near fatal car crash in New Zealand, which left him with serious head and neck injuries. Leigh no longer performs as Keith Lemon, or any other of his characters, following a backlash in recent years. The comedian, who now presents a drive time show on Virgin Radio as himself, issued an apology to both Trisha Goddard and Craig David after they criticised him for his 'racist' depictions on Bo' Selecta! Channel 4 have since removed all episodes of from their streaming platforms. Speaking in 2020 in BBC2's Newsnight, Trisha, 67, said: 'A couple of times I bumped into Leigh, I couldn't even talk to him I felt so sick.' She also said Leigh had since 'had a long talk' with one of her daughters and had been 'absolutely horrified' to learn of the bullying she endured at school as a result of his portrayal. And Craig, 44, told in 2023 he moved to America to escape the 'reaction' to his mocking, likening the abuse to childhood bullying. He said: 'It was very reminiscent of days at my school, when I was growing up, when I'd been bullied, not for long periods of time but just the experience of bullying. 'Once you've experienced it, it's like a trauma that sticks with you. Even then, it was that when the teacher's there, you sort of lean in to that 'everything's OK' and it's a smile, and the guy's holding you, he's gripping you like 'if you say anything it's not just going to be here, it's going to be outside the school gates. 'And I felt that all over again with this, it was being ridiculed and bullied all over again on national TV. The fact that he was wearing a black rubber mask, I mean that throws open the whole thing of him blackfacing, which just wouldn't be acceptable now.' Leigh made a public apology in 2020, expressing his regret at mimicking the black stars. He said: 'I portrayed many black people. Back then I didn't think anything about it, people didn't say anything, I'm not going to blame other people. 'I've been talking to some people and I didn't realise how offensive it was back then. 'And I just wanna apologise and, you know, say sorry for any upset I caused.' He added: 'I guess we're all on a learning journey.' Former Big Breakfast presenter Sykes, 54, claimed Leigh's offensive remarks about her while she made a guest appearance on Through The Keyhole left her 'crying all night.' Melanie Sykes told how she even complained to producers about the comments. She said: 'I went into the studio and I didn't think Keith was going to be like he was on the other show that he does (Celebrity Juice) where it's all sex and b*** jobs and talking about people's a***holes and all that. 'I sat there for a three-hour record and he did all of that stuff to me verbally to entertain the live audience – because it was never going to make the edit of the show, because it was a family, Saturday night show, so he used me to entertain the audience. 'I had Jonathan Ross to my right and Jordan Banjo to my left and the first thing that Keith said to me, in character, was: 'I bet your a***hole smells of flowers.' It makes me want to cry right now because I was so caught in the headlights and wasn't expecting it.' She added: 'It went from bad to worse, I kept thinking, what am I going to do? I can't get up and storm out because it will be all over the newspapers that I've walked out and it will, of course, be my fault, everybody in the audience has a mobile phone so they could see.'

Channel 4 sparks fury after using Southport killer's mugshot in 'sick' advert as viewers beg 'please stop this!'
Channel 4 has sparked fury after using the Southport killer's mugshot in a controversial advert. Recently, an ad on Facebook for the broadcaster's new shows featured a photograph of Axel Rudakubana and said: 'More of the shows you love, more of the shows you will love. Stream now on Channel 4.' The killer was convicted for the murders of Bebe King, six, Elsie Dot Stancome, seven, and Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, at a Taylor Swift dance class in Southport in July 2024, as well as the attempted murder of 10 others. He was sentenced to a minimum of 52 years in January. The advert contained a link to a news special about the case, titled Southport Killer Sentenced, according to The Sun. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Recently, an ad on Facebook for the broadcaster's new shows featured a photograph of Axel Rudakubana (pictured) and said: 'More of the shows you love ❤, more of the shows you will love. Stream now on Channel 4.' Patrick Hurley, who is a Labour MP for Southport, took to social media to express his outrage and posted on X: 'I'm really disappointed to see @Channel4 actively promote this image to Southport residents on Facebook, by buying ads targeting them. 'Please stop this, @Channel 4. 'And as for the text in the post - 'More of the shows you love, more of the shows you will love. Stream now on Channel 4' - is this some sort of sick joke?' The broadcaster has since apologised and removed the photograph from the advert. A Channel 4 spokesperson told The Sun: 'We apologise for any offence or upset this has caused.' Ofcom also confirmed to the publication that Mr Hurley had filed a complaint about the advert. The watchdog commented: 'Decisions on how news is covered, including the choice of images, is an editorial matter for broadcasters.' It comes after it was revealed Rudakubana is allegedly allowed to buy treats in prison such as Maltesers and crisps despite throwing scorching water over a prison guard last month. It is also claimed that he is allowed to call his family, have religious visits and receive money from relatives while in the south east London prison. Patrick Hurley, who is an MP for Southport, took to social media to express his outrage and posted on X A source told The Sun that Rudakubana has been 'spending £5.50 a week' since he attacked the guard and is allowed to buy 'anything he likes as long as it's not dangerous'. They added: 'He's still allowed to buy things like Maltesers and Pringles crisps if he fancies them.' Since Rudakubana attacked the guard he has been on a 'basic' level of treatment behind bars meaning he no longer has access to a TV and that his time out of his cell has been restricted. He is also said to be no longer permitted to purchase butter or baby oil which could be heated for an attack.

Police to begin new search for Madeleine McCann in area where she went missing
The searches will be the first in Portugal for more than two years, with the operation led by German police. The search comes after evidence that Madeleine is dead was said to be on a hard drive discovered in a former factory that belongs to the prime suspect in her disappearance, Christian Brueckner, who lived in the area at the time Madeleine went missing in 2007, while on holiday with her family in Praia De Luz, Portugal. German police suspect the three-year-old was killed by Brueckner, who has recently been acquitted of unrelated sexual offences in Germany. According to the Sun newspaper, the drive was found in 2016 at a shuttered factory that Brueckner had bought for £20,000 in 2008. The suspect allegedly admitted to killing Madeleine at a music event, according to an insurance document that investigators discovered. There have always been doubts about his credibility. Masks, chemicals and firearms were reportedly found at the abandoned property, along with children's clothing and toys. Two memory cards and six USB sticks were also found in a wallet by German police. A dog discovered the evidence in 2016. In one case, the suspect described drugging a mother and daughter outside of a nursery school, while in another, spoke of abusing a four-year-old girl. It was also found that he had Skype talks with other paedophiles, in which he expressed his desire to 'capture something small and use it for days'. Police reportedly discovered over 75 bathing costumes, toys and miniature bikes during the searches, along with pictures of four- and five-year-old girls being abused. Brueckner had also visited the Algarve in the years following Madeleine's disappearance, according to a satellite navigation system. A Channel 4 documentary, to be broadcast tomorrow, will present the claims in their entirety. Last October, Brueckner was cleared at the court in Brunswick of three charges of aggravated rape and two of sexual abuse of children. Prosecutors had argued for the German national to be handed a 15-year sentence and are expected to appeal against the decision. Brueckner (48) is already serving a seven-year prison term in Germany for raping a woman in 2005 in the Algarve region of Portugal where Madeleine went missing. He had been on trial since February over the offences he was alleged to have committed in Portugal between 2000 and 2017. A former prison cellmate of Brueckner's had told a German court that he heard him bragging about abducting a girl in Portugal. Prosecutors in Portugal officially declared Christian Brueckner an arguido (suspect) in 2022. It is thought he visited the area around the time Madeleine went missing. Despite the British government dedicating millions of pounds to police investigations, Madeleine has never been found.
