Indo-Canadians welcome PM Modi's visit to Canada for G7 summit
Brampton [Canada], June 17 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi's arrival in Canada for the G7 Summit has been warmly welcomed by members of the Indo-Canadian community, who hope the visit will mark a turning point in strained India-Canada relations.
Sumit Singh, a Brampton-based Indo-Canadian businessman and immigration consultant, expressed optimism about the visit.
'I wholeheartedly welcome Prime Minister Modi to Canada,' he said. 'I appreciate Prime Minister Mark Carney's invitation to Mr. Modi. This is a positive step and I hope it leads to the restoration of normalcy in India-Canada relations.'
Singh also voiced concern over the impact of diplomatic tensions on the Indian diaspora.
'More than 1.5 million people of Indian origin live in Canada. The deterioration of ties over the past two years has been disheartening for them,' he said, adding, 'This visit is a sign of hope.'
Canadian broadcaster Haleema Sadia also hailed the visit as a diplomatic breakthrough.
'To attend the G7 Summit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Canada. Our Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has done a tremendous job by extending the invitation and easing tensions,' she said.
'There has been a prolonged period of discomfort and concern among Canadians. This invitation, and PM Modi's acceptance, will make a significant difference in improving India-Canada relations,' Sadia said.
Vishal Saini, Director of Hindu Forum Canada, also welcomed the visit and emphasised the contribution of Indo-Canadians.
'There are approximately 1.5 million Indo-Canadians who are contributing significantly to both the Indian and Canadian economies,' he said. 'Prime Minister Modi's visit will further strengthen the cultural and economic ties between the two countries.'
After arriving in Canada's Calgary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday (local time) said that he will meet various leaders at the G7 Summit and share his thoughts on important global issues.
PM Modi said he would also emphasise the priorities of the Global South. This visit is part of his three-nation official tour, which began with Cyprus and will conclude with Croatia.
In a post on X, PM Modi stated, 'Landed in Calgary, Canada, to take part in the G7 Summit. Will be meeting various leaders at the Summit and sharing my thoughts on important global issues. Will also be emphasising the priorities of the Global South.' (ANI)

A significant proportion of EMDE respondents (48 per cent) anticipated an increase in their gold reserves within the next 12 months, whilst only 21 per cent of advanced economy respondents shared this outlook, showing an increase from the previous year. For EMDEs, inflation (84 per cent) and geopolitical circumstances (81 per cent) were primary considerations for holding gold, alongside interest rates. Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar apologises for hurling slippers at Sikh officer
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s West Bengal chief Sukanta Majumdar on Tuesday apologised for allegedly hurling a pair of slippers at a Sikh police officer during a protest rally in Kolkata last week. The apology came three days after a case was registered against him on a Sikh body's complaint. 'If this unfortunate and unintended incident has hurt the religious sentiments of any member of the Sikh community, I offer my deepest and most sincere apologies. It was never my intention to cause any offence or disrespect,' Majumdar said on X. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) shared on social media a video purportedly showing Majumdar hurling slippers during the protest after communal clashes in Kolkata's fringes. It attacked the BJP, saying that it was 'an insult to every Sikh, every uniformed officer, every Indian who believes in dignity and decency'. Census directly related to public welfare, must be done honestly: Mayawati
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Tuesday (June 17, 2025) said the census is directly related to the welfare of people and must be conducted honestly and on time. In a series of posts in Hindi on X, the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister targeted the BJP over its 11-year rule at the Centre, asking if it has been able to eradicate poverty and unemployment from the country. "The national and caste census was pending since the time of the Congress... the process has now begun. The census is directly related to public welfare, and it should be completed honestly and on time in the interest of the country," she said. The government on Monday (June 16, 2025) issued a notification for conducting India's 16th census. It will be carried out with a reference date of October 1, 2026, in the snow-bound areas like Ladakh and March 1, 2027, in the rest of the country. In the upcoming census, caste enumeration will also be done, the first such exercise since Independence. The last comprehensive caste-based count was done by the British between 1881 and 1931. Caste was excluded from all census operations conducted since Independence. The decision to include caste enumeration in the upcoming census was taken by the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on April 30. In another post, Ms. Mayawati said preparations are going on to formulate a strategy for the upcoming Bihar assembly elections. Commenting on the 11-year rule of the BJP at the Centre, she asked if the achievements that the party claims to have made are really benefiting the people. "Has the BJP been able to eradicate poverty, unemployment, pain and sufferings of the people? The people will give the answer at the right time," she said.
