Three private education institutes fined for defacing Odisha government buildings
JEYPORE: The Jeypore municipality authorities on Friday imposed penalty on three educational institutions for defacing government establishments by sticking banners and posters for commercial purpose.
Sources said, the private educational institutions have been using the walls of government establishments, especially schools and colleges, for luring students to their campus which evoked resentment among the residents. The walls of Vikram Deb University were particularly defaced by the posters and banners of the private institutions.
Taking cognisance of the issue, Jeypore sub-collector-cum-municipality executive officer A Sasya Reddy ordered three private educational institutions to remove the banners and posters immediately and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on each for disfiguring public property.
The institutions are Royal Junior college, Times Degree College and Ganesh Coaching Centre. Reddy informed media that the institutions were first asked to remove the posters and banners but they did not respond. However, if they repeat the violations, stringent action will be taken by the administration.
Meanwhile, the municipality has urged the private agencies to seek permission for sticking banners and posters in public places and assured to provide permission as soon as they apply.

DHFL case: Expeditiously decide Kapil Wadhawan bail plea, SC tells Delhi HC
The Supreme Court on Friday asked the Delhi High Court to decide within two weeks the bail plea of Dewan Housing Finance Ltd's former promoter Kapil Wadhawan in the multi-crore bank fraud case investigated by the CBI. A bench of Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Manmohan said Wadhawan was in custody since July, 2022 and his bail plea was coming up for hearing on July 18 in the high court. The bench asked the high court to decide the bail plea within two weeks from the date of hearing. Wadhawan moved the top court aggrieved by the orders of adjournment in his bail plea by the high court and sought an expeditious disposal of his petition. Senior advocate Siddharth Luthra, appearing for Kapil Wadhawan, referred to his client's long custody period aside from the non-adjudication on his bail plea on multiple occasions. The Wadhawan brothers -- Kapil and Dheeraj -- were arrested in this case on July 19, 2022. Dheeraj was granted interim bail by the high court on September 9, last year on medical grounds. The chargesheet was filed by the CBI on October 15, 2022 and cognisance was taken by the trial court. The FIR in the case was based on a complaint made by the Union Bank of India. The CBI alleged that Dewan Housing Finance Ltd (DHFL), its then CMD Kapil, then director Dheeraj and other accused persons conspired to cheat the consortium of 17 banks led by the Union Bank of India. The accused and others induced the consortium to sanction huge loans aggregating Rs 42,871.42 crore. Much of the amount was allegedly siphoned off and misappropriated by alleged falsification of the books of the DHFL and dishonest default in repayment of the legitimate dues of the consortium banks, the CBI claimed. The complainant alleged that a wrongful loss of Rs 34,615 crore was caused to the consortium banks in as much as such was the quantification of the outstanding dues as on July 31, 2020.

ED seizes 322 mule accounts, dummy firms in ₹2K cr 'Delhi classroom scam'
The Directorate of Enforcement (ED), during its search operations on June 18, 2025, at 37 locations across Delhi under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, in the 'Delhi Classroom Construction Scam', recovered 322 bank passbooks linked to mule accounts opened in the names of labourers and used to divert government funds under the guise of legitimate transactions. 'Furthermore, forged letterheads of various private contractors and shell entities, which were used to generate fake procurement records and fictitious purchase bills, were found and seized. Evidence relating to fake invoices submitted to Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) departments, showing inflated or entirely bogus claims, was found and seized,' said an ED press statement. The ED initiated investigation on the basis of a First Information Report (FIR) registered by the Anti-Corruption Branch, GNCTD, against Manish Sisodia (the then education minister), Satyendar Jain (the then public works department minister), and others pertaining to financial misappropriation exceeding Rs 2,000 crore in the construction of approximately 12,748 additional classrooms by the Public Works Department (PWD), Government of NCT of Delhi, between 2015 and 2023. The ED further said that several dummy firms were found during the search which had no real infrastructure, documentation or operational legitimacy, but were shown to have received substantial payments for construction activities relating to the additional classrooms. 'Additionally, substantial incriminating documents and digital evidence have been recovered and seized during the search,' said the ED. 'Despite an initial requirement for 2,405 classrooms, the project scope was arbitrarily increased to 7,180 equivalent classrooms, and subsequently to 12,748 rooms without proper sanction or approvals, resulting in massive cost escalations,' said the ED press statement. The ED further said that there was unjustified adoption of richer specifications proposed by M/s Babbar & Babbar Associates, and execution of duplicate and inflated works. Cost escalations of up to 49.03 per cent were observed across Priority-I and Priority-II phases. During the operation, the investigative agency unearthed substantial incriminating evidence from the premises of private contractors. 'Among the materials seized were original departmental files belonging to the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi, as well as rubber stamps bearing the names and designations of officials from the Public Works Department (PWD),' said the ED.
