Telangana to reconcile Bhoodan land records amid rising disputes

Time of India02-05-2025

Hyderabad: As the Bhoodan land movement completed 74 years and entered its 75th year recently, Bhoodan lands in Telangana remain entangled in a host of unresolved and persistent issues. These include mismatches in land records, missing survey numbers, unclear physical possession, and widespread encroachments.
Recognising the scale and complexity of the issue, Telangana Bhoodan Board officials have decided to initiate a reconciliation process to align Bhoodan land records with revenue department data across districts. The problem is particularly severe in areas surrounding Hyderabad, where large tracts of prime Bhoodan land are located.

Sources in the govt said reports are being compiled on Bhoodan lands from various districts and cross-checked with the records maintained by the chief commissioner of land administration.
According to official data, Telangana has approximately 1.6 lakh acres of Bhoodan land. The largest portions are in the erstwhile Mahabubnagar district (41,700 acres), followed by Khammam (30,700 acres), Nalgonda (28,000 acres), Ranga Reddy (21,000 acres), and Warangal (20,000 acres).
Rangareddy district, particularly the mandals of Maheshwaram, Ibrahimpatnam, and Hayathnagar, is a hotspot of Bhoodan-related issues due to the high commercial value of the land. Officials say that several unauthorised transactions have already taken place on these lands.
A former district collector explained, "The core problem is the absence of a final gazette notification for many Bhoodan lands. There should be both initial and final notifications specifying the exact extent and survey numbers, but in many cases, these details were never properly recorded by donors."
Another complication stems from inconsistencies in land classification, especially before and after the launch of the Dharani land records portal. "For several years, land records would list a parcel as 'patta' land and in other years, the same land would be classified as 'Bhoodan.' This created confusion and led unsuspecting buyers to purchase such lands believing them to be private holdings," sources said.
Revenue department sources revealed that many Bhoodan lands lack proper documentation. While CCLA maintains centralised records, Bhoodan officials argue that district collectorates are responsible for local record maintenance and dispute resolution.
Encroachments remain another major concern. Though tahsildars are empowered to remove illegal occupations on Bhoodan land, enforcement has been lax. In Kuntloor, for instance, despite govt claims over large tracts of Bhoodan land, nearly 2,000 huts sprang up last year. Sources said revenue officials reportedly failed to act, citing political pressure.

UG admission portal for Bengal colleges to open on June 17

Kolkata: More than a month after the board results were declared, the state education department on Thursday notified that the centralised undergraduate (UG) admission portal will be rolled out from Tuesday (June 17. ) The portal will have 17 universities and 460 colleges, the notice states. This has brought relief to the students. The UG admission in Bengal through a centralised admission portal (CAP) was stalled owing to the OBC-reservation-related dispute. However, the minority and private colleges had started their admission soon after the board results were declared. While the ISC results were declared on April 30, the West Bengal Higher Secondary (WBHS) results were published on May 7, followed by the CBSE class 12 results on May 13. State education minister Bratya Basu had repeatedly hinted last week that the UG admission process would begin earlier than last year after resolution of the OBC issue. He had said the amended rule would be placed before the state assembly soon. Last year, the admission portal was inaugurated on June 19 and turned functional from June 24. CAP was launched last year after the plan was put on hold several times. "The online portal will become accessible on June 17 after 4:00 pm," said a Bikash Bhavan source, adding, that the admission portal was ready to function, and only last-minute fine-tuning was underway. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 오스템 임플란트 받아가세요 임플란터 더 알아보기 Undo Sources said students can choose among 460 colleges and will have 25 options, including subjects and colleges, for applying to UG courses. Students will be informed about the seats they secure and name of the institutes they can get admitted to. They will also be informed about remaining seats and waiting list. This year too, the upgrade option will be available. "There is a plan to introduce a chatbot in the portal to answer applicant's queries on a real-time basis," an official said, Lady Brabourne College principal Siuli Sarkar said she was apprehensive that the quality of students would be compromised due to the delay as many would have shifted to other states or taken admission in minority colleges. Besides, it may impact academic schedule. Surendranath College principal Indranil Kar recalled how such delays had affected admissions last year. Principal of New Alipore College Jaydeep Sarangi feels that the delay will not affect filling up of seats. Update your Aadhaar for free till June 14, or pay later

Hundreds of people are visiting the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) regional office in Gomti Nagar daily, with just two days left before the June 14 deadline for free Aadhaar updates. Authorities have deployed extra staff at the centre to manage the rush and are urging people to come with all necessary documents to avoid delays. UIDAI (Regional Office, Lucknow) deputy director general Prashant Kumar Singh confirmed that after June 14, document updates at Aadhaar centres will cost ₹50. Online changes will get charged at ₹25, while updates for documents like address proof will remain free. However, demographic changes such as name, date of birth, or gender can only be done at the centre with valid supporting documents. Changes in demographics which includes name, mobile number, date of birth, or biometrics - fingerprints, iris scan - is charged at ₹50 at Aadhaar centres. If one were to have both demographics and biometrics updated, then a maximum ₹100 would be charged. A senior official reveals that a proposal has been sent to the state government officials regarding the extension of the deadline for the free services on the online services. Officials said the office receives around 350 visitors each day, and more than 10,000 people every month, mostly to correct their date of birth, name, and address in Aadhaar, which remained unresolved at Aadhaar centres. According to a senior UIDAI official, 60–70% of the visitors who visit the regional office of the Aadhaar seek correction in their date of birth, a majority of which were wrongly entered previously by entry operators of the private company during Aadhaar registration. 'We are seeing a heavy rush. One student came right after finishing Class 12 and had to update his birth details because the wrong date was recorded during enrollment by the operator. He submitted a valid birth certificate with a QR code and got it corrected after verification,' the official said. Many people realise such discrepancies only when they apply for jobs, passports, or higher education, leading to last-minute rushes. Officials said Aadhaar-related mistakes can delay important applications, making timely updates crucial. 'Aadhaar holders who haven't updated their data in the last 10 years must update their proof of identity and address. This online facility is free only till June 14 while the centre charges the same rate of ₹50,' Singh said. UIDAI officials also advised citizens to update their biometrics every 10 years, including their photograph, fingerprint, and iris scan, to ensure smooth authentication during services like banking, subsidies, and mobile SIM verification. People can also lock their biometrics online by logging into the UIDAI portal using their Aadhaar number, which helps prevent unauthorised use. Additionally, users can check their Aadhaar usage history, including the number of OTPs generated or services accessed using Aadhaar. 'There's a lack of awareness about these features. We encourage people to use the transaction history and biometric lock to keep their Aadhaar secure,' said another official.
