Maroons guns of past help Dolphins spine shine: Katoa

Maroons guns of past help Dolphins spine shine: Katoa

Yahoo10 hours ago

Dolphins star half Isaiya Katoa is a true NSW Blue in waiting, but he has credited video sessions watching one of Queensland's greatest spine combinations for the dazzling attack of his side.
The Dolphins have scored a combined 100 points in their past two matches, with a record-breaking 56-6 win over St George Illawarra on Friday night following a 44-8 demolition of competition leaders Canterbury before their bye.
"We have a spine meeting where our nine, six, seven and one come together," Katoa said after his man-of-the-match display against the Dragons.
"Some of the clips we look at are Cameron Smith, JT (Johnathan Thurston), Cooper Cronk and Billy Slater all connecting (for the Maroons).
"The more they connected the more success their team had. We are trying to build that into our own games and still try to play to our individual strengths. It is a work in progress for us."
Built on steely defence, the past two Dolphins wins have also featured the creative wares of halves Kodi Nikorima and Katoa at their best.
Dazzling fullback Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow was on Origin duties for the Canterbury clash, but scored a try double against the Dragons.
Hooker Jeremy Marshall-King returned from an extended break with a leg laceration against the Red V. With bench hooker Kurt Donoghoe chiming in to perfection, the Dolphins attack, when on song, is as good as any side in the NRL
Centres Herbie Farnworth and Jake Averillo have been in great touch, which is due to Nikorima and Katoa connecting so well together as a duo and not just sitting on their own sides of the field.
"We speak about (combining) all week. Over the pre-season we were working really hard at trying to find each other on the field, whether I come over to the left side or Kodi comes over to the right side," Katoa said
"The more we can find each other the more we can find guys like Hammer (Tabuai-Fidow), Herbie and Jake on the outside. With the speed and strike they have, you need to keep giving them the footy."
Once again it is the old Maroons halves pairing that Katoa has learned so much from.
"The two that come to mind are Cooper Cronk and JT, just the way they were always talking to each other, playing both sides of the field and mixing it up at times," Katoa said.
"It is something me and Kodi base our game off."
The Dolphins are now in seventh position on the ladder and play North Queensland away next Saturday night.

Steelers' Pro Bowler trade buzz shot down by insider Ian Rapoport

Steelers trade buzz burns bright — but flames out just as fast. Insider Adam Schefter broke the news that the Dolphins and Steelers engaged in trade talks regarding Miami's Pro Bowl TE Jonnu Smith — and while it was surprising, insider Ian Rapoport believes it's unlikely anything more will come of it. Advertisement In a recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Rapoport was asked how real the trade news really was — and here's what he had to say: 'I think Jonnu Smith wants to make money,' Rapoport said. 'He is actually a part of what the Dolphins want to do. It feels to me that he wants more money and would like to stay [with the Dolphins]. I know he wants a lot — we'll see what [the Dolphins] end up doing.' Hopefully nothing more comes out of the trade speculation, as Steelers TEs Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington are underrated pieces of Pittsburgh's offense — and paying the soon-to-be 30-year-old Smith a massive extension makes zero sense for the Steel City brand of football. Report: Steelers back to pursuing Dolphins Pro Bowl TE

The Steelers-Dolphins trade rollercoaster continues — as insider Adam Schefter has provided a surprising update regarding Miami's Pro Bowl TE Jonnu Smith. Earlier in the day, Schefter reported that the Steelers were unlikely to pursue a trade for Smith — but that stance has since changed, as the well-respected insider presented the following update on the situation: Advertisement "Back in it: the Steelers renewed conversations today with Dolphins TE Jonnu Smith, who is seeking a new contract. The trade between the Steelers and Dolphins is still alive, per source." Acquiring Smith is beginning to emulate that of the Steelers' pursuit of Brandon Aiyuk — which featured new and conflicting updates on a daily basis. If the Steelers pull off the blockbuster trade for Smith, it remains to be seen how his inclusion will impact TEs Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington's usage on offense. Steelers' Connor Heyward dismisses Jonnu Smith trade rumors — questions his fit on offense

It's safe to say one Steelers tight end isn't thrilled by the recent Jonnu Smith trade rumors. Connor Heyward, who serves as a FB/TE hybrid for the Steelers, isn't sold on how well Smith fits the offense — as the Dolphins Pro Bowler would enter an already crowded TE room with Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington. Advertisement PennLive's Nick Farabaugh was caught up with Heyward — and the young Steeler explained why the trade rumors make little sense: "We all see it, but let's be honest. It would be complicated having him and Pat. They're kind of the same type of tight end,' Heyward said. 'They both got to have 100 balls a year thrown their way. You've seen that. We all have produced — me, Darnell, and Pat. If that was to happen, we'd welcome it, but at the same time, we know Pat's our guy right now." Heyward wasn't finished there, however, as he continued to tell Farabaugh that the Steel City runs through Freiermuth — and that the trade is unlikely to happen: "People aren't just saying Muth for no reason. Pat's here. If that was happening — and I don't think it's going to happen — but Pat's here." Advertisement Insider Adam Schefter recently reported that the Steelers were back in trade talks with the Dolphins regarding Smith — and if he were acquired by Pittsburgh, Heyward may have some explaining to do.
