Maroons guns of past help Dolphins spine shine: Katoa

Dolphins star half Isaiya Katoa is a true NSW Blue in waiting, but he has credited video sessions watching one of Queensland's greatest spine combinations for the dazzling attack of his side. The Dolphins have scored a combined 100 points in their past two matches, with a record-breaking 56-6 win over St George Illawarra on Friday night following a 44-8 demolition of competition leaders Canterbury before their bye. "We have a spine meeting where our nine, six, seven and one come together," Katoa said after his man-of-the-match display against the Dragons. "Some of the clips we look at are Cameron Smith, JT (Johnathan Thurston), Cooper Cronk and Billy Slater all connecting (for the Maroons). "The more they connected the more success their team had. We are trying to build that into our own games and still try to play to our individual strengths. It is a work in progress for us." Built on steely defence, the past two Dolphins wins have also featured the creative wares of halves Kodi Nikorima and Katoa at their best. Dazzling fullback Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow was on Origin duties for the Canterbury clash, but scored a try double against the Dragons. Hooker Jeremy Marshall-King returned from an extended break with a leg laceration against the Red V. With bench hooker Kurt Donoghoe chiming in to perfection, the Dolphins attack, when on song, is as good as any side in the NRL Centres Herbie Farnworth and Jake Averillo have been in great touch, which is due to Nikorima and Katoa connecting so well together as a duo and not just sitting on their own sides of the field. "We speak about (combining) all week. Over the pre-season we were working really hard at trying to find each other on the field, whether I come over to the left side or Kodi comes over to the right side," Katoa said "The more we can find each other the more we can find guys like Hammer (Tabuai-Fidow), Herbie and Jake on the outside. With the speed and strike they have, you need to keep giving them the footy." Once again it is the old Maroons halves pairing that Katoa has learned so much from. "The two that come to mind are Cooper Cronk and JT, just the way they were always talking to each other, playing both sides of the field and mixing it up at times," Katoa said. "It is something me and Kodi base our game off." The Dolphins are now in seventh position on the ladder and play North Queensland away next Saturday night.

The prop has been handed a one-match ban for a careless high tackle . He caught Dolphins front-rower Harrison Graham high in the 77th minute at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday and was sent to the bin. Fisher-Harris had only just returned from injury, which had kept him out of the team for a month. Had he chosen to fight the charge at the judiciary and been found guilty, he would have missed two games. From the same game, Dolphins playmaker Kodi Nikorima was fined $2000 after entering an early guilty plea to a grade 1 careless high tackle charge. The Warriors are second on the NRL table and on a five-game winning streak. They take on the third-placed Raiders on Sunday.

‘A few honesty sessions': Tough conversations inspire Dolphins to crucial win in Sydney thanks to late defensive heroics

A couple of honesty sessions throughout the week proved telling for the Dolphins as they recaptured their defensive resolve from earlier in the season to leave Sydney with two valuable points thanks to some late heroics against the Eels. After a slow start to the year, the Dolphins conceded just 64 points from rounds 4 to 7, but that number ballooned to 76 in their previous two games as the Raiders and Roosters piled on the tries in the second half. The Dolphins had every right to fall apart on Thursday night as the penalty count swelled to 8-1 against them, but they held their nerve and defended stoutly to survive a furious late comeback from the hosts. 'We spoke about it all week and had a few honesty sessions,' five-eighth Kodi Nikorima said. 'We spoke about the last two weeks before this game and that our defence wasn't where it needed to be. 'We had to talk about it because there was no point beating around the bush. We leaked 76 points in the last two weeks, and we'd actually leaked fewer points in the previous month. 'It was hard, but we needed it. We showed we can turn it around when we want to. 'We want to be a top-eight team, and you see in the finals that the teams there are good defensively. We hadn't been like that for the past two weeks, so we made it a focus for us tonight against a Parramatta side that loves to shift the footy.' The Eels made several late breaks and looked certain to tie things up in the final minute when Josh Addo-Carr got into the clear and found Dylan Brown, who tried to turn Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow inside out but lost the ball in contact. 'Not many fullbacks can make that play,' Nikorima said, equally impressed by Herbie Farnworth's tackle on Will Penisini moments earlier. 'He's wonderful with the ball, but to see him do that defensively is a credit to himself and it's him showing that he's got a care for this team.' Tabuai-Fidow has done some special things in attack, but his calmness in defence was the difference on Thursday as the Dolphins picked up a rare win in Sydney. 'I just had to keep my feet steady,' he said. 'I know I've got the speed if he does want to burn me on the outside, so I just had to have my antennas up and be where he was trying to be. 'It's probably instinct for me. 'The last two weeks, we've come out firing but have let the second half slide. We're a hard team to beat if we defend well and get our discipline in order.'

Dolphins players pull out of NRL clash to stay in Brisbane as Tropical Cyclone Alfred nears

Dolphins duo Kodi Nikorima and Mark Nicholls have withdrawn from the clash with South Sydney as Cyclone Alfred makes a beeline for the southern Queensland coast. Kenny Bromwich, who was slated to be 18th man, has also pulled out of Friday night's clash in Sydney. Sean O'Sullivan comes into the side to replace Nikorima while prop Josh Kerr is on the bench in place of Nicholls. Concern for family members being left behind, and the fact their homes are in the firing line of the cyclone, were behind the players' decisions to stay at home and not leave with the team on their flight to Sydney on Wednesday evening. Their decision has the blessing of the club. Nicholls was seen sandbagging his home on Wednesday. He has a young family and lives in Redcliffe, which is expected to feel the brunt of Cyclone Alfred when it hits land between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast on Friday morning. The Dolphins and Rabbitohs showdown, originally slated for Suncorp Stadium, was shifted out of Brisbane to Sydney's CommBank Stadium. Bree Nikorima, the partner of Dolphins playmaker Kodi Nikorima, is six months pregnant and has two young children. She took to social media to lash the NRL for families being left behind during a cyclone to play a game of football, labelling the move 'disgusting' in a now-deleted story on Instagram. She also made the point her home is prone to flooding. Brisbane and Dolphins club bosses have made moves to ensure the safety of staff and players' families left behind. The Broncos flew to Sydney on Tuesday to prepare for Thursday night's NRL clash with Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium and are scheduled to return on Friday. Loved ones of players and staff from both clubs face nervous days. Brisbane CEO Dave Donaghy has flown back to the Queensland capital from Sydney to oversee support. Donaghy's Dolphins counterpart Terry Reader said the NRL had helped the club with their contingencies. 'Any of our players and travelling staff's partners that are worried about not having their partners around, we are going to put them up in a hotel in the city so they have more security around being with each other,' Reader said. The Bureau of Meteorology's technical bulletin has warned there is a possibility, although low, of the Category 2 cyclone becoming a low-grade Category 3 as it gathers momentum. With 26,000 homes in danger of flooding, the Broncos will ensure those left behind have the support needed to prepare for what may unfold. Broncos coach Michael Maguire addressed the situation on Wednesday morning in Sydney when he fronted reporters. Sign up to Australia Sport Get a daily roundup of the latest sports news, features and comment from our Australian sports desk after newsletter promotion 'The club has been really proactive,' Maguire said. 'Our chief executive [Donaghy] flew down [to Sydney] last night and turned around and went straight back to town to make sure everyone is safe while the team is down here. 'They are talking to and getting out to the partners and the wives to make sure they are safe through this situation.' Reader said he 'absolutely' understood the sentiments of Bree Nikorima. 'Everyone is apprehensive about what is happening and we are making sure we do everything we can to make everyone more comfortable and put our players' and partners' minds at ease,' Reader said. Dolphins players had the day off on Wednesday to make sure their families are well prepared, while the club's welfare team will oversee the situation until the team returns. The AFL postponed its two opening-round fixtures in Brisbane and the Gold Coast, initially scheduled for Thursday and Saturday night. Brisbane Roar's A-League Women clash with Melbourne City, scheduled for Sunday at Brisbane's Perry Park, has also been postponed.
