Dolphins players pull out of NRL clash to stay in Brisbane as Tropical Cyclone Alfred nears

The Guardian05-03-2025

Dolphins duo Kodi Nikorima and Mark Nicholls have withdrawn from the clash with South Sydney as Cyclone Alfred makes a beeline for the southern Queensland coast.
Kenny Bromwich, who was slated to be 18th man, has also pulled out of Friday night's clash in Sydney. Sean O'Sullivan comes into the side to replace Nikorima while prop Josh Kerr is on the bench in place of Nicholls.
Concern for family members being left behind, and the fact their homes are in the firing line of the cyclone, were behind the players' decisions to stay at home and not leave with the team on their flight to Sydney on Wednesday evening. Their decision has the blessing of the club.
Nicholls was seen sandbagging his home on Wednesday. He has a young family and lives in Redcliffe, which is expected to feel the brunt of Cyclone Alfred when it hits land between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast on Friday morning.
The Dolphins and Rabbitohs showdown, originally slated for Suncorp Stadium, was shifted out of Brisbane to Sydney's CommBank Stadium.
Bree Nikorima, the partner of Dolphins playmaker Kodi Nikorima, is six months pregnant and has two young children.
She took to social media to lash the NRL for families being left behind during a cyclone to play a game of football, labelling the move 'disgusting' in a now-deleted story on Instagram. She also made the point her home is prone to flooding.
Brisbane and Dolphins club bosses have made moves to ensure the safety of staff and players' families left behind.
The Broncos flew to Sydney on Tuesday to prepare for Thursday night's NRL clash with Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium and are scheduled to return on Friday. Loved ones of players and staff from both clubs face nervous days.
Brisbane CEO Dave Donaghy has flown back to the Queensland capital from Sydney to oversee support. Donaghy's Dolphins counterpart Terry Reader said the NRL had helped the club with their contingencies.
'Any of our players and travelling staff's partners that are worried about not having their partners around, we are going to put them up in a hotel in the city so they have more security around being with each other,' Reader said.
The Bureau of Meteorology's technical bulletin has warned there is a possibility, although low, of the Category 2 cyclone becoming a low-grade Category 3 as it gathers momentum. With 26,000 homes in danger of flooding, the Broncos will ensure those left behind have the support needed to prepare for what may unfold.
Broncos coach Michael Maguire addressed the situation on Wednesday morning in Sydney when he fronted reporters.

'The club has been really proactive,' Maguire said. 'Our chief executive [Donaghy] flew down [to Sydney] last night and turned around and went straight back to town to make sure everyone is safe while the team is down here.
'They are talking to and getting out to the partners and the wives to make sure they are safe through this situation.'
Reader said he 'absolutely' understood the sentiments of Bree Nikorima. 'Everyone is apprehensive about what is happening and we are making sure we do everything we can to make everyone more comfortable and put our players' and partners' minds at ease,' Reader said.
Dolphins players had the day off on Wednesday to make sure their families are well prepared, while the club's welfare team will oversee the situation until the team returns.
The AFL postponed its two opening-round fixtures in Brisbane and the Gold Coast, initially scheduled for Thursday and Saturday night.
Brisbane Roar's A-League Women clash with Melbourne City, scheduled for Sunday at Brisbane's Perry Park, has also been postponed.

Carl Spackler in great shape with Ascot approaching

The five-year-old was sold to Yulong Investments last month, shortly after recording his third Grade One victory for trainer Chad Brown in the Maker's Mark Mile at Keeneland. Now with Australian handler Ciaron Maher, Carl Spackler will make his yard debut in the opening event of the Royal meeting, with William Bourne, Maher's bloodstock manager, acknowledging the course as a key obstacle for the Lope De Vega horse to overcome. Queen Anne Stakes preparations complete for Carl Spackler — Adam Morgan (@Adam_Morgs) June 11, 2025 He said: 'I would say his biggest challenge is the conditions and the track. A stiff mile at Ascot is probably the biggest ask coming from America, I think that will be his biggest challenge in handling that. 'It would be amazing (to win). It's pretty unique to purchase a horse in America, to be trained by an Australian and run at Royal Ascot, but the long-term plan is to bring him out for the Cox Plate, so we'd be thrilled to get this on the way through.' Carl Spackler was put through his paces on Newmarket's July course on Wednesday morning, with Jamie Spencer in the saddle, although top Australian jockey James McDonald will be in the plate on Tuesday. Bourne said: 'We came here wanting to have a hit out. That's his second gallop since he's been here in Newmarket, he came in with good condition, a very healthy horse from Chad Brown and after the feedback from Jamie Spencer on his first gallop, he needed a good hit out so coming here today, he got that and that's exactly what we wanted to achieve. 'He's done it really nicely and Jamie said when he gave him a little squeeze late on, he really exploded and he was pretty impressed by how much he'd switched on from his first to his second gallop. It's obviously not an easy task for us, but the horse looks fit and well.' McDonald is no stranger to Royal Ascot success, having ridden three winners at the fixture in 2022, and has enjoyed plenty of big-race wins for Yulong, not least with ex-British runner Via Sistina who he has steered to six Group One wins since her transfer to Australia. Bourne said: 'James is great, obviously he's had a lot of luck with the colours on with Via Sistina and he's had winners at Royal Ascot before. He's a great fit for the owners, they wanted him and it's a great to have a world-class jockey on your horse in a Group One. 'He's Yulong's main rider in Australia and if 'J-Mac' was available, we were very happy to use him. 'James is happy to come over and ride the horse, I was chatting to him last week, he's watched his tapes and is getting very excited about the horse. He didn't know who he was and I got a very bland response, but after watching the tapes and having a look at the horse, he's very excited and upbeat.' Winner of eight of his 12 starts in America, although Carl Spackler has the Cox Plate, Australia's premier weight-for-age race, firmly on his agenda in the autumn, should he run well at Ascot, he might yet have a second British start. Bourne added: 'We'll play it by ear, we're going to look at Goodwood as an option but his ultimate goal will be the Cox Plate, so we will see how he runs on Tuesday and go from there. He's obviously a quality horse and there will be plenty of options for him.'

Dustin Johnson given steamy going-away gift by Paulina Gretzky ahead of US Open

Dustin Johnson and his wife, Paulina Gretzky, are used to turning heads and ahead of his US Open bid at Oakmont this week, they've done so again Dustin Johnson, the 2016 US Open champion, received a rather saucy send-off from his partner, Paulina Gretzky, as he prepared for year's tournament. The golfing star, who won the 2016 tournament, was given a bit of extra motivation by Gretzky ahead of his attempt to add another prestigious title to his collection. The 40-year-ol d LIV golf star is returning this week to the course at Oakmont which he has described as the "hardest" he's ever played. But he's once more among the favourites to be in contention for top honours. ‌ Before his departure for the next Major, Gretzky shared a series of photos featuring herself and Johnson in various poses. DJ is seen sporting a white blazer and trousers combo sans shirt, while Gretzky dons a revealing outfit. ‌ The post is simply captioned "nobody else." Fans on social media had their share of jokes on the decision to post the carousel, however. One fan wrote: "Clearly DJ is zoned in on the U.S. Open this week. Grinding like never before," with another adding: "DJ about to post a +15 and be home by Friday evening." Other fans noted how the couple looked, with some criticising - in jest - Johnson's decision not to wear an undershirt with his white blazer. By and large, fans were excited to either see Johnson play at Oakmont or were happy for the couple for their Instagram post. Johnson's recent major performances have been underwhelming, with only one top-10 finish since 2023 and two missed cuts this year, including a disappointing start to the Masters. Despite this, Johnson expressed confidence that his game is nearing its best form at a crucial moment. "I feel like my game's been really close," he said. "I haven't really got a lot out of it." He added: "It was definitely nice to have a nice finish last week," Johnson said. "I played good every day. I didn't - you know, still kind of giving away some shots. I need to clean that up a little bit. But played really solid every day, hit it nice, gave myself a lot of opportunities. ‌ "Just still kind of gave some shots away each round that you can't afford to do at a golf course like this." The LIV star also shared that Oakmont was the most difficult course he's played. "Good memories here," he continued. "Obviously it was a long time ago. I have confidence in this golf course because I know I played well, but obviously this week puts a lot of pressure on the driver. I feel like I'm driving the ball really good right now. "Even from there, though, it doesn't get much easier. You definitely have to hit it in the fairway if you want a chance to win around here. ... It's hard to compare. I've played some hard courses, but it all depends on the conditions. "This one's hard no matter what - soft, firm, windy, no wind."
