Raipur: In a move to combat 'serious security risks', Chhattisgarh govt has announced a statewide campaign to identify and take action against
illegal Bangladeshi nationals
and immigrants, and individuals residing without valid documents.
The campaign follows a resolution passed during a high-level meeting chaired by chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai on April 28.
Deputy chief minister and home minister Vijay Sharma said that special task forces (STFs) will be established in every district to carry out this mission."This is a matter of national security. These unauthorized individuals not only violate civil rights but pose serious security risks," Sharma said in a statement.The opposition Congress, meanwhile, asked for the data behind these campaigns, questioning their results and effectiveness, "How many were expelled during past campaigns? How many were even identified? These figures should be made public," former CM Bhupesh Baghel said. Baghel also alleged that such narratives tend to resurface around election time, especially in border states like West Bengal, insinuating political motives behind the renewed focus. He also questioned the outcome of the police officers' door-to-door campaigns.On the other hand, deputy CM Sharma also warned that the crackdown will not be limited to immigrants alone. Strict action will be taken against individuals involved in creating fake documents or those aiding illegal migrants—such as contractors, scrap dealers, tent house operators, and garden workers—who facilitate such entries for minor profits.A circular from the Police Headquarters has instructed all district police chiefs to act on the directives issued by the central govt. These include identifying and verifying all foreigners, especially Bangladeshi nationals, residing unlawfully within the state. In areas where migrant laborers have been brought in by contractors, police have been told to conduct thorough verification to ensure no illegal immigrants are being employed or sheltered.1,800 Pakistani Visa Holders Identified in RaipurRaipur SSP Lal Umed Singh said that around 1,800 individuals, including two Muslims, are currently residing in the city on Pakistani visas, most of them belonging to the Hindu community. FIR against Liberian flagged ship that sank off Kerala coast
Over two weeks when the Liberia-flagged cargo vessel MSC ELSA 3 sank off the coast of Kerala, the state police on Wednesday booked the owner of the ship, its master and the crew members for rash navigation and negligent conduct involving poisonous substances among other charges, officials said. The cargo vessel sank 14.5 nautical miles off the coast of Kochi on the morning of May 25 while sailing to Kochi from the Vizhinjam International Seaport. As the ship sank, over 640 containers that were aboard went down along with it. According to officials, at least 12 of those contained calcium carbide, a chemical that reacts dangerously with water as it releases acetylene gas, which is highly combustible. While efforts are currently on to extract the fuel oil and marine diesel from the sunken ship's tank, the containers filled with hazardous substances have not yet been cleared from the sea yet. A mechanical failure in the ship's ballast system was seen as one of the primary reasons that led to the vessel's sinking. On the basis of a complaint by C Shamji of Neerkunnam Matsya Gramam in Alappuzha, a first information report (FIR) was registered at the Fort Kochi Coastal Police station. It named the owner of the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the ship master and the crew as first, second and third accused respectively. HT has seen the report. It stated that the neglect by the accused led to the mishap involving the ELSA 3 vessel. It further stated that there was environmental damage in the region in the form of plastic and other hazardous materials that were being discharged in the sea. It also said the accident caused huge losses to the fisherfolk and obstruction to the movement of ships. The accused have been booked under sections 282, 285, 286, 287, 288 and and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita (2023). Following the police action, the Congress questioned why a case was filed after a delay of 17 days from when the ship sank and demanded an answer from the state government and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Congress general secretary and Alappuzha MP K C Venugopal claimed, in a Facebook post, that the state and central governments did nothing till now as the shipping company has business relations with the Adani Group. He claimed that it was due to the persistent demands by the Congress that the police action was taken. The FIR comes days after the state government faced intense criticism by the opposition and environmental activists over delay in initiating criminal charges against the shipping company and crew of the MSC ELSA 3 vessel. An official note prepared by the chief secretary A Jayathilak said that the government was intending to file compensation claims based on damages rather than immediately file a criminal case. Bangladesh interim government chief Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday, June 11, ruled out his role in the next Bangladesh government after 2026 elections, the first since a mass uprising overthrew the government. Speaking in London, Muhammad Yunus, asked if he himself was seeking any political post, the 84-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner said there was 'no way', waving his hands in the air for emphasis. 'No way, no way. I think no one of our cabinet members (Council of Advisers) would like to do that,' he said, adding, 'Our job is to make sure that the transition is managed well, and that people are happy when we hand over power to the elected government.' 'So we want to make sure that the election is right, that is a very critical factor for us. If the election is wrong, this thing will never be solved again.' Muhammad Yunus also recalled the time when he sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi's help in stopping former PM Sheikh Hasina from making political statements. Ousted on August 5 last year after a massive student-led agitation, Sheikh Hasina faces multiple cases in Bangladesh. She fled Bangladesh and landed in India after the massive uprising that saw hundreds storming her official residence. Since Muhammad Yunus took over, the interim government has been trying to extradite Sheikh Hasina from India. 'This will continue, another stage has come, now there is a case. The International Crimes Tribunal has started the trial process; they sent notices to Hasina for all the crimes she has committed. So, they have to respond to the notices,' he said. 'This is a legal notice, so we have to go to the Interpol and all the other things that happen through that. This is the process that we are following; we want it to be very legal, very proper.' Muhammad Yunus said he sought PM Modi's help when the two held a bilateral meeting at Bimstec Summit in Bangkok in April 2025. He said, 'When I had a chance to talk to Prime Minister Modi, I simply said you want to host her, I cannot force you to abandon that policy. But please help us in making sure she doesn't speak to Bangladeshi people the way she is doing.' 'She announces on such and such day and at such and such hour she will speak, and the whole of Bangladesh gets very angry,' he added.

Hyderabad: After a grueling discussion with the Congress high command for two days, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy allotted portfolios to the newly inducted ministers on Wednesday night. Senior leader and Chennur MLA G Vivek Venkatswamy was given the portfolios of Labour, Employment, Training and Factories and Mining Mines and Geology. Adluri Laxman Kumar, who was elected from Dharmapuri Assembly Constituency, would look after SC, ST, Minority Welfare and Department for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Senior Citizens and Transgender Persons. Earlier, the Chief Minister was holding all welfare portfolios and also Labour and Employment. Makthal MLA Vakiti Srihari will be the Minister of Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Fisheries and Sports and Youth Services. An official notification was issued to this effect. The portfolios of the old ministers remain unchanged. Prior to this announcement, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, who returned to Hyderabad after a three-day visit to New Delhi, had a meeting with Chief Secretary K Ramakrishna Rao and finalised the portfolios for the new ministers. While accusing Kishan Reddy of being hand-in-glove with BRS leadership, he alleged that the BJP leader had done great injustice to Telangana and was obstructing projects. He said that he has not brought a single project to the state and asked as to why Kishan Reddy has not conducted a single review with him on Telangana issues as a Cabinet minister.
