2025 Tony Awards: Steppenwolf Theatre's ‘Purpose' wins best play
The play, with a stort loosely based on the family of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, was nominated alongside 'The Hills of California,' 'John Proctor Is the Villain' and 'Oh, Mary!'
The win is a major victory for the famed Chicago company that last wowed New York theater with Tracy Letts' 'August: Osage County' in 2008. Actress Kara Young, who was added to the Chicago cast of 'Purpose' for the Broadway production, also won a Tony for best featured actress in a play.
In accepting the award, Glenn Davis, Steppenwolf's co-artistic director and a cast member and Tony nominee himself, had the chance to remind New York and the television audience of Steppenwolf's accomplishments over the years. Playwright Jacobs-Jenkins thanked 'the city of Chicago for making this show what it was.' He also said Chicago had 'the best actors in America.'

The ‘Hamilton' musical movie is coming to theaters this September
The hit Broadway musical 'Hamilton' is making its way to the big screen on Sept. 5. Lin-Manuel Miranda announced the theatrical release date for the Tony Award-winning musical Tuesday night during an interview on 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.' 'We always wanted to release it theatrically, but then the pandemic hit and so we decided to release it on streaming, so that everyone could see it at home whenever they wanted,' Miranda said on the show. '[Soon] you will be able to see 'Hamilton' in movie theaters nationwide and in Puerto Rico.' The show's cinematic release marks a major milestone: It's been nearly 10 years since the off-Broadway premiere of 'Hamilton,' which was based on the life of Alexander Hamilton, a founding father of the United States. Created by Miranda, who also composed the music, lyrics and book, the hip-hop- and R&B-inflected musical used source material from 'Alexander Hamilton,' a 2004 biography written by Ron Chernow. The musical went on to win 11 Tony Awards, including best musical, and the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 2016. The film was shot in June 2016, during a live performance at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway, and features much of the original cast. This includes Miranda as Alexander Hamilton; Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr; Renée Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler and Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton. The film was originally slated for release in movie theaters in October 2021. Disney paid $75 million for worldwide movie rights in 2020 and released it later that year exclusively on its streaming platform; the film went on to win two Emmy Awards in 2021. The 'Hamilton' anniversary is being celebrated in more ways than one. Prior to Miranda's 'Tonight Show' interview, Madame Tussauds New York unveiled a wax figure of Miranda dressed as Alexander Hamilton at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. Two special performances of the hit musical will also take place at the same theater today. Every actor who has performed on the Broadway musical since its opening has been invited, according to the Associated Press. Attendees for the matinee were already selected via a lottery process and the evening performance is an invite-only fundraiser for the Immigrants: We Get the Job Done Coalition — a host of 14 immigrant service organizations that uplift immigrant communities across the country. Show creator and original star Lin-Manuel Miranda announced Tuesday night that the Tony Award-winning musical will hit theaters Sept. 5 to celebrate its 10th anniversary. "We've been celebrating all year, but we have one more way to celebrate," Miranda said on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon." "Sept. 5, you will be able to see 'Hamilton' in movie theaters nationwide and in Puerto Rico." "Turn up, sing along," he added, noting that tickets would be available starting Aug. 6. Miranda said he had always wanted to do a theatrical release of the version filmed with most of the original cast in 2016, which first streamed on Disney+ during the pandemic in July 2020. The live-capture Disney+ version went on to win two Primetime Emmys, including outstanding variety special. The stage production of "Hamilton," which tells the story of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton and his involvement in the American Revolution and the nation's founding, premiered off-Broadway in February 2015, hitting Broadway on Aug. 6, 2015, at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. The musical, which is based on the 2004 biography "Alexander Hamilton" by Ron Chernow, earned 16 nominations at the 2016 Tonys, taking home 11 awards total, including the coveted best musical award. Leslie Odom Jr. joins ‘Hamilton' this September. How much are tickets?

Starting Sept. 9, Leslie Odom Jr. will step back into the disgraced former Vice President's shoes for the second time in his career. This time around, he'll portray the Newark native in 'Hamilton' for 12 weeks at Broadway's Richard Rodgers Theatre. As of now, he's scheduled to take his final Midtown bow on Wednesday, Nov. 26. The juicy role, which netted Odom Jr. a Tony and Grammy during his historic 2015-16 run with Lin-Manuel Miranda, is one he can't wait to slip back into. 'Returning to 'Hamilton' is a deeply meaningful homecoming,' Odom, Jr. said in a statement. 'I'm so grateful for the chance to step back into the room — especially during this anniversary moment — and to revisit this brilliant piece that forever changed my life and the lives of so many.' According to The Associated Press, the gifted performer speculated he played Burr approximately 500 times in the mid-2010s but never tired of the part. 'It still had revelation for me, and it still gave me reason to look a little deeper and focus a little harder,' he noted. In an interview with The Today Show announcing his Great White Way comeback, he also teased more 'Hamil-ten' surprises, since the show is celebrating a decade since its inception. 'I'm not breaking any other news here today,' he coyly told host Savannah Guthrie. '…but I know they have a lot of wonderful things planned.
