The new George RR Martin? How Joe Abercrombie became the dark lord of fantasy

The new George RR Martin? How Joe Abercrombie became the dark lord of fantasy

Telegraph04-06-2025
James Cameron fans are blue in the face begging the director of Terminator and Aliens to do something other than churn out new Avatar films – as he has been doing remorselessly since 2008. It appears they may at last have their wish. While he is to revisit Avatar's world of elongated Smurf-like aliens with – groan – a further three sequels, Cameron has also announced he is scripting an adaptation of The Devils by Lancaster fantasy writer Joe Abercrombie. To quote another fantasy author, the road goes ever on and on – but in the case of Cameron, it has finally veered in a more interesting direction.
Cameron's swerve into epic fantasy is a thrilling development and, not only because it potentially means less Avatar in our lives. Described only half-jokingly by its author as 'medieval Suicide Squad ', Abercrombie's The Devils is set in a semi-fantastical medieval Europe in which a 10-year-old girl is Pope, and an Elven army is about to invade.
Our hero, Brother Diaz, is a man of the cloth who must work with a group of monsters – among them a vampire, a werewolf and a necromancer – to save humanity. As Abercrombie says, Suicide Squad is a reference, but the book could also be thought of as Game of Thrones meets The A-Team or The Dirty Dozen as scripted by a blood-thirsty JRR Tolkien.
A Devils movie scripted by an figure of the calibre of James Cameron would be a crowning achievement for Abercrombie, who, since publishing his first novel in 2006, has quietly become a leading voice in British speculative writing. Not that he needs Hollywood's blessing: The Devils topped this year's bestseller list and was also a success in the United States, where it reached number five in the New York Times hard-cover bestseller charts – adding to the estimated five million books he has already shifted.

Those are blockbusting figures for an author operating in the relatively stodgy field of epic fantasy – which has lately been eclipsed by more voguish genres such as ' Romantasy ' (think Mother of Dragons meet Mills & Boon) and authors such as Sarah J Maas (who has sold 40 million books and counting).
'His writing has a charisma to it. There's a cynical wit and a bit of tongue-in-cheek self-awareness. So many of his characters have colourful and iconic internal monologues that lend some levity to whatever horrible atrocity is currently taking place,' says Hiu Gregg, the fantasy blogger behind the website The Fantasy Inn, who says that a Devils movie would need to be in the roguish, semi-jokey vein of films such as James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy.
'That's where I think the challenge will be in adapting something like The Devils. You need the casting to be spot-on. You need to take the text only as seriously as it takes itself. You can't play it 100 per cent straight, or it will flop. The three-word pitch for this book is 'Papal Suicide Squad', but if James Cameron is going make this movie, he needs to understand that we're talking the James Gunn version.'
Abercrombie is often compared to George RR Martin and, speaking to the Telegraph in 2022, revealed that reading Martin's A Game Of Thrones in his early 20s had a huge impact. Both he and Martin had grown up on Tolkien's vision of fantastical worlds defined by a battle between good and evil. Martin turned the concept on its head by suggesting true evil was not a dark lord in a shadowy tower – but a rival noble prepared to shiv you in the back if it meant advancing their own position.
'I found expressed in that book, what I felt had been missing in epic fantasy,' said Abercrombie. 'It had that scale and depth [familiar from Tolkien], but it also had the sort of arresting, surprising characters. It had shocks, the surprises: the good guys don't always win. And suddenly everything felt dangerous and unpredictable. It was the kind of things that I'd seen in other genres. But I've never seen it applied to classic epic fantasy in that way. And it really made me think, 'Wow, you can do something shocking and exciting and character-focused within epic fantasy'.'
He put those ideas into practice with his first novel, The Blade Itself. Written while he was working as a freelance film editor, the book was rejected by multiple publishers and agents. But then a friend happened to be on a course with a woman who worked for fantasy publisher Gollancz: she agreed to throw an eye over the novel, and a few weeks later, Abercrombie had his first book deal.
The Blade Itself didn't set the world alight in 2006, but the story of a down-on-his-luck barbarian named Logen Ninefingers and a former torturer named Inquisitor Glokta earned a following over the following years. It had arrived at the perfect time: with the success of George RR Martin and other authors such as Robin Hobb, gritty, violent storytelling had become the hot new trend in fantasy – a milieu that came to be known as 'grimdark'.
'Grimdark' was initially used as an insult – but Abercrombie jokingly embraced the term by taking the Twitter handle 'Lord Grimdark'. 'At that time, when people use the word grimdark, they were taking the piss,' he would explain. 'They were saying something was bad. They were using it in as a pejorative: risible, ridiculous, over the top, too much violence, too much cynicism, too much nihilism. I was taking the piss out of myself.'
Beyond the humour, he will have known that his writing had too much flair and inventiveness to be corralled into any one genre.
'A large part of Abercrombie's success is that his books are not just grimdark. He was of course a huge part of the mid-noughties to mid-tens peak of grimdark fantasy popularity, but he broke a lot of rules within that sub-genre,' says the Fantasy Inn's Hiu Gregg. 'He dared to be funny. He could make a character death or a betrayal feel like a punchline. Rather than extinguishing hope completely, he understood how to use it for dramatic or comedic contrast. And for me, that gives his books a longevity beyond being just another set of grimdark stories.'

Abercrombie's work also wrestles with big ideas – but in a way that feels organic rather than preachy. For instance, his Age of Madness trilogy – which began with A Little Hatred in 2019 – is set in a fantasy world in the midst of an Industrial Revolution. It has wizards and warriors, but also explores the tension between capitalism and workers, between those who want to defend the status quo and those eager to burn it to the ground. It is Middle-earth meets Les Misérables.
'I try to stay in characters' heads. It's the story of those people. And so you don't want to make it 'message-y', if you can avoid it,' he said in 2022. 'You don't want it to be too on the nose. At the same time, you're living in the modern era, and you're writing for an audience of people who are living in the modern age. So everyone brings their current day to the reading of it and you can't avoid what's going on in the world around you while you're writing it. And nor would you want to. Part of the fun of fantasy, as opposed to historical fiction, is that it is really about now. People in fantasy don't tend to be people with a medieval mindset. Generally, they're quite modern in their thinking and their talk and so on – that allows you to hold up a glass darkly if you like, and investigate some things that might feel a little bit much in a modern setting.'
The big difference between Abercrombie and George RR Martin is obviously that Abercrombie has finished what he started. In the 14 years since Martin's most recent Game of Thrones novel, A Dance with Dragons, the Englishman has published six novels and two short-story collections. Martin says it will take another two books to conclude his A Song of Ice and Fire saga, but at age 76, there are question marks about those volumes ever seeing the light of day.
There is precedent in fantasy for authors leaving audiences hanging on. When Martin's friend Robert Jordan died with his Wheel of Time series unfinished, author Brandon Sanderson completed the tale working from Jordan's notes. It has been suggested Abercrombie would be the perfect writer to do likewise with A Song of Ice and Fire. But while he admires what Sanderson did with Wheel of Time, he has always poured cold water on the idea that he might carry on Martin's work for him.
'It's flattering in the sense that it's a series I really love,' he said in 2022. 'It's [also] weird and macabre. It's so personal, writing a book. The thing that makes a book great is that authorial voice that cannot be imitated, that no one else has. The task of trying to imitate that would be both extremely difficult. Probably quite frustrating. And maybe in the end a bit disappointing because you'd never quite do it. And you'd be suppressing your own voice a little bit in order to get there.'
So no Game of Thrones sequels from Abercrombie. Instead, he is working on the next book in the Devils series. Which can only be good news for fans of beautiful, dark, twisted fantasy.
Five essential Joe Abercrombie novels
1. The Heroes, 2011
A gritty tale of courage, betrayal and redemption taking place against the background of a three-day battle between the 'civilized' Union from the South and the wild and lawless warriors of the North and centred on a group of ancient standing stones referred to as 'The Heroes'. Set in the same universe as the author's First Law trilogy, Abercrombie's ability to conjure action and violence without tipping into sadism is on full display while characters such as noble barbarian warrior Curnden Craw are fully realized and brimming with human flaws.
2. The Devils, 2025
It's Medieval Europe as we've never seen it before. The Church consists of female clergy, headed by a 10 year old Pope, while in the lands beyond, hordes of cruel elves are massing and planning an invasion. The only way to save civilization is for a rag bag crew of freaks and outlaws – led by mild-mannered Brother Diaz – to travel to the equivalent of ancient Troy to return a princess to her throne. The Middle Ages filtered through Abercrombie's Quentin Tarantino-does-fantasy sensibility, The Devils is a pure thrill ride. No wonder James Cameron is so keen on it.
3. The Blade Itself, 2006
Abercrombie's debut combined Games of Thrones grimdark sensibility with a very British sense of humour that owed a little to Terry Pratchett and a lot to Monty Python and the Holy Grail. It was fantasy – with all the po-facedness stripped away.
4. A Little Hatred, 2019
Fantasy novels can often feel trapped in an eternal stasis: why after thousands of years has nobody in Middle-earth or Westeros invented the flintlock pistol, for instance? Abercrombie however pushes onwards with A Little Hatred, a thrilling novel of intrigue and backstabbing set in a fantasy universe experiencing the first aftershocks of an Industrial Revolution.
5. Red Country, 2012
Doing for fantasy what Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven did for the Western, Red Country is the third standalone novel set in the author's First Law world (as debuted in The Blade Itself). It introduces Shy South, a former brigand who sets out to find her missing brother and sister.

Mafia: The Old Country Guide: 'Chapter 3 – Pizzu' Walkthrough & Collectibles

Mafia: The Old Country Guide: Chapter 3 – Pizzu Meet Isabella/Luca Back to top ↑ Chapter 3 of Mafia: The Old Country picks up with Enzo back at the estate. There are two objectives this time around, and if you want to grab all the achievements, you'll need to see Isabella first before heading to the stables to meet Luca. You'll find Isabella in the garden so follow the white marker, opening the gate to trigger a little cutscene. Afterwards, you'll gain the Achievement: Garden Rendezvous. Just after, you'll find the Charm: Astuzia on the mantle of the old fireplace in the garden (just round the corner past Isabella). Finally, head to the stables and meet with Luca. After a brief cutscene, mount your horse and follow the boys to the first pick-up spot. The First Pick-Up Spot Back to top ↑ When you dismount your horse, you'll find Note: Public Warning pinned to the wall. While we're here, we can actually grab a Mystery Fox just nearby. Circle around the estate and you'll find a house with a little stream outside. Cross over and head up the stairwell to the left, where you'll find the Mystery Fox just at the top of the stairwell overlooking the estate. When you grab it, you'll gain the Achievement: Vulpi Misterisua. Also from the Mystery Fox location you'll be able to see the Saints' Card: San Bernardo in the distance at the shrine. To get this, head behind Luca and the others (who should be waiting by their horses now), hopping several fences until you come to a shrine. The card will be just next to the candle. Finally, mount your horse again and ride to the Citrus farm. The Citrus Farm Back to top ↑ When you arrive at the citrus farm, you'll now need to confront the owner and get your money. However, just before you do, dismount your horse just at the entrance, and swing by round the front of the truck at the front of the estate (pictured below) to find Newspaper: Chinese Relations. When you're ready, head inside the farm. After a bit of an altercation with the farmer and his son, go into the adjacent room to the left. After interatcting ith the safe once, you'll be encouraged to look around. Instead, interact with the safe again and enter the code 10-20-30 to unlock it, grab the Dinari and gain the Achievement: Salvatore's Apprentice. Before you leave, circle the room and grab the three Notes: Appeal for Information, Outgoing Payments and Farmer's Romantic Poem. Leave the citrus farm and ride with Luca up to the quarry. Once you get there, you'll find Newspaper: Sicily Under Water on the white stone slabs to the left of the Foreman's Office building (pictured below). Knife Fight – Manuele Back to top ↑ It's now time for another knife fight, Manuele is quite straightforward and once again, the best tactic is to parry his wild swipes and return with several slashes of your own. Eventually he'll go down. Follow Luca and Cesare to the Galante's Bar after a bit of a ride and following the cutscene, you'll be back in control of Enzo again. Walk with Leo and Cesare to the customs yard Back to top ↑ You'll now need to walk with Leo and Cesare for a bit. They're turn a corner past a pier (pictured below) but make note of this area as we can grab another newspaper. When you reach a stone stairwell to the right of Leo and Cesare, do a 180 and head down those steps so you're on a lower level going back the way you came. Keep walking until you reach the pier adjacent to the bar, and you'll find Newspaper: Amazing Inventions on top of some wooden boxes. Return to the main path and keep following Cesare until you come to a forced stealth section in a warehouse. Reach the Impound Back to top ↑ In this area, you'll need to make sure you're not spotted. It's also a good idea to loot every body you come across now to nab some extra Dinari. To begin with, wait for the two guards to stop talking and one to walk away. Approach enemies from behind and hold Square (X) to choke them out. You'll then need to tap Square (X) repeatedly to choke them out. After dispatching the first guard, grab the Note: Customs Office Report from the table. You can also use your Knife to jimmy open lockboxes, which give you extra Dinari, and you can do that now if you wish as there's one right on the table. Just beyond this, you'll find a guard standing watch. To distract him, stay in cover behind the boxes of lemons, grab the bottle from the side of the table, and hold R1 (RB) to throw it behind the guy and distract him. Don't head in just yet though, as instead circle around to the left. You'll find another guard walking into a house, so follow him in and take the guy out. Inside this room, you'll find two notes: Ludovici's Investment and Impound Yard – Incident Reports. The latter actually holds a Safe combination partway down the note, which is 21-10-08. Open the safe and grab your 200 Dinari reward. Head back to the guard standing outside Impound Yard 2 and throw a bottle (or coin) to distract the guy. With his back turned, take him out. Find the Whisky Back to top ↑ You'll now need to search around for the right whisky box. Naturally, it's the furthest in the warehouse right at the back, next to the car. Not to worry though as there are a fair amount of goodies to grab inside before we get there. To the right of your starting area, there's a desk with a Whetstone on and a plethora of bottles to distract guards. However, if you hug the left-most wall, you'll find a Trinacria Coin (and gain the Achievement: Bona Furtuna for picking it up as it'll be your first) and another Mystery Fox in the corner. It's behind one of the whisky crates (pictured below) and up against the wall. There are 3 guards in this area and they tend to patrol around away from the others so pick them off one at a time until you come to the car. With the whisky crates found, interact with the impound door to trigger another cutscene. Speak with Farmer Fichera Back to top ↑ Next, you'll be in an area with a farmer. Just to the left of where you start talking to him, head up the first little stone stairwell and you'll find Newspaper: Italian Explorer on the bench. Next, mount you horse and follow the others out to the bandit camp. When you arrive, there will be a short shootout before you need to follow Cesare inside. Search the hut Back to top ↑ Inside the hut, you'll find Note: List of Targets on the table in front of you, along with a Whetstone and Charm: Ingegnoso on the side too. Just to the right of the Charm is Ransom Note – Romina. Grab the rifle and shoot the padlock to head back outside again. Find the water pump Once you step outside, turn around and you'll note there's a Trinacria Coin hanging above the door. Shoot it down and collect it. Survive the ambush Back to top ↑ Head through this linear section into the barn, then open the doors to trigger another shootout. This one is much longer and will feature two waves of enemies. In Old Country, enemies will regularly flank you and try to drive you out of cover, so it's a good idea to keep moving from cover to cover to get a better angle on approaching enemies. When the enemies are downed, be sure to loot all the bodies for extra Dinari. Next, pick up two bandit bodies and dfump both inside the well. Thankfully you won't need to do every downed body, but after the second, it'll trigger a cutscene and the end of the chapter. For completing this section, you'll gain the Achievement: The Family Business.

Schools ‘facing disaster' as one in 10 teachers set to quit in two years

The education sector is facing disaster, a union boss has warned, after a new survey showed that one in ten teachers could leave the profession in the next two years. A survey of 1,800 teachers saw 9 per cent say they are 'very likely' to quit in the next 24 months, with over a third (37 per cent) saying their workload is overwhelming or unsustainable. With 468,258 teachers in England, this would amount to around 42,000 leaving the profession – a figure that dwarfs the 6,500 Labour has promised to hire, funded by charging VAT on private school fees. Just 22 per cent of teachers said their workloads were manageable, while a quarter said they didn't have enough time for lesson planning, the survey conducted by ed-tech platform Kahoot indicated. Matt Wrack, general secretary of teaching union NASUWT, told The Independent that the Labour government has taken 'no serious action' to address the current crisis in teaching. 'There are multiple factors behind the crisis in teacher recruitment and retention. There is a huge problem of excessive and unmanageable workload. 'This is widely recognised, including by government, but no serious action is being taken to address it either by ministers, local authorities or academy trusts. So the situation has got worse. 'Teachers all too often face poor or abusive behaviour which is often not addressed by school leaders or employers.' He added: 'On top of all this, living standards have fallen due to fourteen years of austerity pay and attacks on teachers' pensions. 'It is a recipe for disaster and no way to run education.' Mr Wrack didn't rule out strike action from teachers in the NASUWT union, saying it depends on how the government proceeds when it comes to teachers' pay and funding for the education sector. The survey saw more than a third of respondents blame short attention spans, driven by phone and social media use, as their main barrier to engagement with pupils. Class sizes were also a significant concern, with 1 in 5 (21 per cent) of teachers citing large class sizes as the biggest obstacle to keeping students engaged. Kahoot's Sean D'Arcy warned that an exodus of teachers from the profession would 'heap further pressure on an education system that already has some of the highest class sizes in the industrialised world'. 'The UK is already experiencing a teacher shortage, and a continued departure of teachers could also add to existing challenges such as limited time and overcrowded classrooms', he told The Independent. 'Educators shape young minds and prepare children for the world. They are one of our most vital societal assets and the idea that so many of them could leave the profession is worrying. Of the 1800 we surveyed, over 250 said that it was unlikely they would still be in the classroom come 2027.' He added: 'Labour has committed to hiring 6,500 extra teachers in England but even the minister in charge, Bridget Phillipson, has admitted it will be 'a challenge'. I sincerely hope it is one the government can rise to.' The government estimates its VAT tax raid will raise £1.7bn per year by 2029-30, money which ministers said would be used to fund 6,500 new teachers for state schools. But so far, private school pupil numbers have fallen by more than 11,000 in England following the tax hike, DfE data showed - sparking concerns the exodus could push up class sizes in state schools and reducing the effectiveness of the tax. In January 2025, there were around 582,500 pupils at English private schools, down from 593,500 at the same point last year. Kahoot's survey spoke to 1,782 UK teachers in June 2025. A Department for Education spokesperson said: 'Last year saw one of the lowest rates of teachers leaving the profession since 2010, and we are already delivering on our pledge to recruit and retain 6,500 more talented teachers with 2,300 more secondary and special school teachers in classrooms this year. 'This government is restoring teaching as the highly valued profession it should be, announcing pay awards of almost 10 per cent over two years and has committed to tackling poor pupil behaviour, high workload and poor wellbeing.'

Meet the new Queen of the Formula One paddock: Lando Norris' stunning on-off actress girlfriend previously dated Premier League flop and is primed to become Geri Halliwell's heir on the grid after lighting up the Hungarian Grand Prix

While Formula One has headed for its summer break following the conclusion of the Hungarian Grand Prix, there is a new flame lighting up the paddock. That spark comes in the form of Margarida Corceiro, a model who has had an on-off relationship with McLaren driver and 2025 title hopeful Lando Norris. Corceiro, 22, was first spotted with Norris, 25, in May 2023 only for the pair to have reportedly split in August 2024, per The Sun. Their relationship first hit the headlines when she was spotted driving with Norris in the back of his Fiat in 2023 - with Corceiro previously known as the long-term girlfriend of former Chelsea forward Joao Felix. The Portuguese international first linked up with the Instagram beauty in 2019, dating for four years. Confirmation of the end of the model's relationship with Felix came when she was seen being driven around by Norris in the luxury surroundings of Monaco just over two years ago. Corceiro, 22, was first spotted with Norris, 25, in May 2023 only for the pair to have reportedly split in August 2024 Corceiro hails from Santarem in Portugal and has amassed a colossal social media following, boasting over two million Instagram followers and more than 800,000 fans on TikTok. As an actress, she has appeared in Portuguese television dramas and is regularly featured in campaigns, including stints for Intimissimi and Alo Yoga. Corceiro was a contestant in the country's version of Dancing with the Stars back in 2020. She also co-founded the eco-conscious swimwear brand Missus and has graced the pages of Vogue Portugal. Lando previously denied being being involved in a serious relationship when he admitted earlier in the season that he 'had many girlfriends.' Their parting marked the ending of a second relationship with a Portuguese model after the British superstar separated from Luisinha Oliveira two years ago. They had dated for a similar timeframe as Norris and Corceiro before ending their romantic association, with the McLaren main man at the time posted a heartfelt break-up message on social media. 'After time and consideration, Luisa and myself have mutually decided to end our romantic relationship but remain good friends,' Lando posted at the time of his split. The model and actress could now be poised to take over as the new queen of the F1 paddock after Christian Horner's wife, former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell, will no longer be present following her husband's sacking from Red Bull last month. It brought to an end the longest reign of Formula One team principals in the sport and comes a year after the scandal that engulfed him over texts he apparently sent to a female employee. Halliwell stood by her husband after the explosive accusations rocked the Formula One paddock last year. Horner has vehemently denied the claims. Screenshots of alleged WhatsApp messages between Horner and a Red Bull employee were leaked anonymously the day after a three-week investigation, carried out externally, cleared the 51-year-old of all allegations. Horner survived accusations of coercive behaviour towards his colleague – and was twice cleared in internal investigations of wrongdoing. In the midst of the controversy, he was told by his wife, Spice Girl Halliwell, to make it 'all go away' – a feat he pulled off for 16 months. The file allegedly containing texts and images was leaked to almost 200 people involved in the sport, including owners Liberty Media, team principals and the media. Horner was then exonerated for a second time after the female employee appealed against the findings of the investigation, which were upheld. An independent lawyer interviewed Horner for almost nine hours, it is understood. Netflix's most recent series of its hugely-successful Drive to Survive programme revealed Horner's immediate reaction to the bombshell news of the alleged texts being leaked. 'The higher you rise, the sharper the knives,' he said. 'I've reached the top of my game and I never thought in a million years I'd have a challenge like this in my career,' Horner continued. 'It's a crucial time of year, in a job that I do, you're the front face of the organisation.
