'I promise that in 2026, total number of seats won by BJP will be under 50. In 2021, BJP's count stopped at 77. I had said that Trinamool's seats would increase in 2024, and it turned to be true…. BJP's talkative president Sukanta Majumdar won by 9000 votes. He even dared to organise people against me. If he does politics for 50 years and contests 10 elections, even then his margin wouldn't come near 7.1 lakh, which I got in Diamond Harbour,' Banerjee claimed while speaking in Satgachi today, which is part of his Constituency.

‘Kolkata airport's boundary should be sealed immediately': Suvendu Adhikari flags ‘security risk'

'What is happening at Kolkata Airport is a matter of great concern from a security perspective. Prayers are being performed on the ground. The boundary of Kolkata Airport is not being sealed,' he said. He expressed worry over the movement of outsiders in and around the airport premises. "People from outside are coming and going, and there is also connectivity to China and Bangladesh from here. We have demanded that the boundary (of Kolkata Airport) be sealed," Adhikari said. Adhikari also highlighted that two newly developed runways have still not been made operational despite being completed with central government funding. "The two new runways for which the central government allocated a budget, and whose work has also been completed, have not been made operational. Only a single runway is functional," he said. He attributed the delay in operating the new runway to an issue involving a religious structure. "The reason given is the relocation of the Mosque to the secondary runway. This cannot go on," Adhikari remarked. Calling for urgent action, he said, "The boundary wall should be closed immediately. The boundary of such a sensitive international airport should be sealed immediately." Meanwhile, on the occasion of International Yoga Day, West Bengal's Leader of Opposition and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari criticised the state government for not participating in the nationwide celebration. He alleged that while both NDA and non-NDA ruled states observed the day, West Bengal deliberately skipped it. Speaking to ANI, Adhikari said, "NDA and non-NDA state governments are celebrating Yoga Day today, except West Bengal, because West Bengal follows Bangladesh. It does not follow Delhi. More than 180 countries are celebrating International Yoga Day today. As Indians, we are proud of this." The sharp remarks came as International Yoga Day was celebrated across the country, promoting the physical and mental health benefits of yoga. (ANI)

BJP slams Congress on 50th Anniversary of Emergency, marks ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' with exhibition in Delhi
To mark the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, imposed on June 25, 1975, by the then Indira Gandhi-led Congress government, the BJP government in Delhi commemorated the day as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' by inaugurating a special exhibition at Central Park in Connaught Place. The exhibition was organised by the government's Department of Art, Culture and Language, in collaboration with the Hindi Academy. It was inaugurated by Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. Paying tribute to those who resisted the Emergency, the CM drew a parallel between the pro-democracy movement of 1975 and India's freedom struggle. She lashed out at the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's government, calling it 'cruel, dictatorial, and insensitive.' 'The 21-month period that began on June 25, 1975, saw millions jailed without cause. There was no appeal, no argument, no hearing — it was the darkest chapter in the history of Indian democracy,' she said. Taking a dig at the Congress, she remarked: 'Those who once crushed democracy now ironically roam with the Constitution in their pockets, despite having disrespected it in the past.' She recalled the sacrifices of BJP leaders and veterans like Atal Bihari Vajpayee, LK Advani, Madan Lal Khurana, and Balraj Madhok, who were imprisoned during the Emergency. 'Their stories must be remembered by future generations,' she said. 'Such dark days will never return to this country, and the people will not tolerate any dictatorial attempt,' she said, adding that both the Centre and Delhi government remain committed to upholding the Constitution and its democratic values. She also announced a year-long series of programmes to honour the 'warriors of democracy' who fought against the Emergency. Minister of Art and Culture Kapil Mishra, whose department had curated the exhibition, said it showcases rare documents, many being displayed publicly for the first time. 'These documents expose how democracy was murdered during the Emergency,' he said. 'Overnight, the entire opposition was thrown behind bars, the courts were stripped of power, journalists were jailed, and media establishments shut down. The way India's democracy was attacked is something the country must never forget,' Mishra said. He called the exhibition 'not just a preservation of history, but a reminder of how democracy was defended through struggle and sacrifice.'

Bike taxis are not luxury but necessity to ease traffic congestion, operators tell Karnataka high court
Bengaluru: The Bike Taxi Welfare Association argued on Wednesday that bike taxis are not a luxury, but a necessity in easing traffic congestion. The state govt's decision to ban the services affected 6.5 lakh bike taxis and 6 lakh dependent families. Senior advocate Shashank Garg, appearing on behalf of the association, submitted that the drivers had taken loans and there are no alternative employment opportunities. They put hard-earned money into buying vehicles. He suggested some interim arrangement could be made to enable the vehicles to ply by imposing conditions for the safety of drivers and passengers. Dwelling upon the ban, Garg submitted that there is a complete policy vacuum and pointed out that the E-bike rules of 2021 completely debunk the expert committee report of 2019, relied on by the state govt to ban bike taxis, as the E-taxi policy clearly spells out last-mile connectivity. He added the expert committee only considered and confined itself to Bengaluru city before making their recommendation for imposing a ban. He further claimed the ban was imposed more to benefit the autorickshaw drivers and termed it a political issue. Meanwhile, a division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice V Kameshwar Rao and CM Joshi adjourned the hearing to next Wednesday, i.e., July 2. Uber India Systems, ANI Technologies Private Ltd, and Roppen Transportation Services Pvt Ltd (all aggregators), along with others, have challenged the single bench's order. On April 2, 2025, a single bench disposed of their petitions, referring to an expert committee report of 2019, which considered the impact of bike taxis on traffic and safety. "Unless the state govt notifies relevant guidelines under Section 93 of Motor Vehicles Act and the rules framed thereunder, the petitioners cannot operate bike taxi services, and no directions can be issued to the state govt to consider their applications seeking the grant of aggregator permits/licences," the single bench said in its order. It is always open to the state govt to take measures, i.e., framing guidelines in relation to bike taxi services, the order further stated, while granting six weeks' time to cease operations. The said period was further extended until June 15 by another order.
