This is Spinal Tap gets a sequel after 40 years – and there's already a trailer
Spinal Tap II – The End Continues is a direct sequel to 1984's This is Spinal Tap, which starred Michael McKean, Harry Shearer and Christopher Guest.
The mockumentary about a hapless heavy metal band, dubbed 'England's loudest band', was directed by and starred Rob Reiner, who is returning to direct the new film, with McKean, Shearer and Guest all reprising their roles.
Bleecker Street has acquired the rights to the sequel and the original movie too, which will be restored and re-released in cinemas over the summer. It will also return to steaming services later this year.
The 30-second teaser trailer doesn't reveal much about the fil, but does nod to a joke from the original film where a Marshall guitar speaker 'turns up to 11'. However, one dial now turns up to infinity.
The sequel will follow the band as they reunite after a 15-year hiatus for one final concert. Reiner will once again play documentarian Marty DiBergi who follows the group on tour with music icons Elton John, Paul McCartney and Garth Brooks all reportedly making cameos.
Also appearing will be Canadian singer Paul Shaffer, The Nanny star Fran Drescher and British comedians Nina Conti, Kerry Godliman and Chris Addison.
In a statement, Reiner said: 'So happy to be working with the folks at Bleecker Street who are passionate about keeping Tap's legacy alive and happy to give Marty DiBergi another shot at relevancy.'
'We feel privileged for the opportunity to work with Rob Reiner and the brilliant minds behind the original This Is Spinal Tap, and to be part of a film that has resonated with so many,' added Bleecker Street's CEO Andrew Karpen and president Kent Sanderson.
' This Is Spinal Tap isn't just a movie – it's a cultural touchstone that pioneered the mockumentary genre and left an indelible mark on both film and music. Returning to this world through Spinal Tap II is an extraordinary chance to celebrate its legacy while creating something fresh for both new and devoted audiences.'
Nearly a decade ago, Reiner and the actors sued French media group Vivendi and its subsidiary StudioCanal for hundreds of millions of pounds over claims that the studio withheld profits from the film, its music and its merchandise.
They reportedly settled the lawsuit in 2020.
Spinal Tap have briefly performed as a real band, reuniting for a tribute to Freddie Mercury, Glastonbury and environmental Live Earth concerts.
In 2009, the mock group were nominated for Classic Rock magazine's Roll of Honour.

Canadian entrepreneur Eric Perez assumed control of the club in November 2023 as part of the Ontario Inc consortium. Truro clinched the National League South crown in April this year during the new ownership's maiden full campaign at the club. By doing so, they became the first Cornish side to secure promotion to non-league's highest division, with Perez believing that makes their achievements more significant than Wrexham's. "I think what we're doing is even more special than what they've done," Perez told BBC Radio Cornwall. "There are, at the end of the day, five league clubs from Wales. There's only one club in Cornwall that's even close to the Football League. If we could get there, it would be something that would change Cornwall forever. "It would weave a patch into the cultural tapestry of a place that has been alive and vibrant for 3,000 years. To be able to do something like that is, to me, what life is all about, so I actually feel like this is bigger than Wrexham could ever be." Alongside securing triumph on the field, Perez and Truro's other backers have been working hard to enhance the club's facilities. A new stadium was constructed on the city's outskirts approximately 12 months ago to stage the side's fixtures, with additional development occurring this summer. In contrast to Reynolds and Mac, Perez brings prior expertise in managing sporting organisations, having previously owned Cornwall's rugby league outfit and maintained connections with Toronto Wolfpack. Whilst Wrexham's remarkable rise may have captured King Charles's interest, prompting his visit to the Racecourse Ground in December 2022, Truro boast their own royal fan. Perez said: "It's just been such a journey. I remember when we first took over the club and we set out some goals, no-one really paid attention. I think everyone's paying attention now, because we are really on the cusp of something huge here playing our first home National League match. "It's been a super hectic off-season. First of all, we've had a stadium renovation that we've done, building a new main stand to accommodate what is now the requirements for this league. Then obviously transitioning the club from hybrid to full-time professional, that's been massive." Whether Truro can emulate Wrexham's success is yet to be seen. The two actors have turned the North Wales outfit from National League nearly men to a Championship team with ambitions of reaching the Premier League in the near future. However, the owner of National League side Truro City has now claimed their rise is "bigger" and "more special" than Wrexham's. Truro won the National League South title in April this year during the new owners' first full season at the helm. The former Pop Idol star passed away suddenly at the age of 41 in August 2022 after inhaling chloroethane - also known as ethyl chloride - at his Minnesota flat. Three years after the tragedy, 50 year old Canadian actress Natasha Henstridge - who petitioned for divorce from the Colourblind singer in 2013, following just over two years of marriage - has confessed she still misses him deeply. Sharing a collection of photographs of Darius, including one showing the pair posing before the Eiffel Tower in Paris. She wrote on Instagram on August 11: "Love and light always. Miss you today.... Sending love to the Danesh's and everyone whose life he touched." According to his partner, Darius had been "living with a broken neck" and an undiagnosed cardiac condition when he passed away, reports the Mirror. Darius Danesh made his first appearance in Popstars but did not have any success (Image: ITV) Lauren Cheek revealed that a post-mortem examination showed his heart was "twice the size" it should have been and that she believes he used the recreational anaesthetic to ease his pain. Article continues below She told The Sun on Sunday newspaper: "Darius was living with this heart condition that he didn't know he had. So many things could have taken him, but this one thing did, and he died in his sleep. "His mum told me they only found out after they did the autopsy. His heart was twice the size it was supposed to be, which was fitting, because that is genuinely how he was - he had so much love. "The autopsy also found he was living with a broken neck, but he refused to get help or complain about it. I think he used (chloroethane) because he was in so much pain and he didn't want to take pills, not even aspirin. That's what killed him - the substance mixed with his heart and he couldn't take it." Lauren continued by revealing that Darius - who rose to prominence after delivering an unforgettable performance of Britney Spears' chart-topper '...Baby One More Time' on the ITV talent programme Popstars before launching a series of successful singles and later starring in West End productions - had suffered his injuries during racing alongside Hollywood star Gerard Butler and consistently "refused" her pleas to seek medical attention. She continued: "He was with Gerry (Butler) in Monaco for the Grand Prix and they slammed into a wall during a race with the Prince of Monaco. I don't think it ever fully healed and then he rebroke it because he got hit by a car in London a year or two before he died when he was riding a bike. "And then he got into a car accident with his dad in Scotland. D was in the passenger seat, his dad was driving and someone drove into them. "He was always in pain and I would beg him to see the doctor, but he refused. He was trying to find a natural remedy." Declining surgery Darius had been struggling with severe neck pain following two separate motor vehicle collisions. The initial incident happened in Spain during 2010, leaving him with a fractured neck. In a previous interview with HELLO!, he revealed how he came within just 'three millimetres from death'. The performer had been enjoying a driving holiday with friends and was travelling on the motorway during scorching weather conditions. "Because of the haze, we didn't see that there was a diesel spill on the road. Before we could work out what was going on, it was already too late," he explained. "The car careered out of control on a bend, and we smashed into a wall at 70mph. My first recollection is my friend, the driver, asking if I was ok." He continued by describing how he recalled experiencing a "sharp pain" in his neck before losing consciousness. After the crash, Darius was reportedly presented with the option of neck surgery that could have been transformative, but the entertainer notably refused the treatment due to concerns it might affect his singing voice. Article continues below His discomfort progressively worsened over time, and a subsequent road traffic accident in 2021 further aggravated his condition. Rather than undergoing the operation, Darius allegedly managed the 'intense nerve pain' through cannabis, pain medication, and an anaesthetic substance, the last of which tragically led to 'respiratory arrest'.
