India arrests 11 accused of spying for Pakistan: Reports
NEW DELHI: Indian authorities have arrested nearly a dozen nationals for allegedly spying for Pakistan following their most serious conflict in decades, local media reported, citing police.
At least 60 people died in fighting earlier this month triggered by an Apr 22 attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir that New Delhi accused Islamabad of backing - a charge Pakistan denies.
Kashmir is claimed in full by both countries, which have fought multiple wars over the Himalayan territory since their 1947 independence from Britain.
Broadcaster NDTV reported on Monday (May 19) that authorities had arrested nine alleged "spies" in the northern states of Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.
Punjab's director general of police Gaurav Yadav said on Monday that his team had arrested two people "involved in leaking sensitive military information".
Police had received "credible intelligence inputs" that the two men were involved "in sharing classified details" related to New Delhi's strikes deep into Pakistan's territory on the night of May 6 to 7.
A preliminary investigation showed they were in "direct contact" with handlers from Pakistan's intelligence agency, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), and "had transmitted critical information concerning the Indian Armed Forces", Yadav added.
In Haryana, police arrested a travel blogger last week on similar charges.
Police say the accused woman travelled to Pakistan at least twice and had been in contact with an official from the country's embassy, local media reported.
Others arrested include a student, a security guard and a businessman.
The India Today news outlet reported 11 such arrests. It said the accused were "lured into the spy network through social media, monetary incentives, false promises, messaging apps and personal visits to Pakistan".
The arrests come after the worst flare-up in violence between the nuclear-armed rivals since their last open conflict in 1999.
A ceasefire was agreed after four days of missile, drone and artillery attacks that sparked fears of a descent into full-blown war.

Arambai Tenggol, which is alleged to have orchestrated the violence against the Kuki community, has also announced a 10-day shutdown in the valley districts. The state's home ministry has ordered all internet and mobile data services in volatile districts to be shut off for five days in order to bring the latest unrest under control. Internet services were shut down for months in Manipur during the initial outbreak of violence in 2023, which displaced around 60,000 people from their homes according to government figures. Thousands of the state's residents are still unable to return home owing to ongoing tensions. Long-standing tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities revolve around competition for land and public jobs.

India, central Asian countries express interest in joint rare earths exploration
NEW DELHI – India and five central Asian countries have expressed interest in jointly exploring for rare earths and critical minerals, they said in a joint statement on June 6 after the fourth meeting of the India-Central Asia Dialogue. The announcement comes amid global alarm over China's decision to curb exports of rare earth alloys, mixtures and magnets, spooking industries ranging from automobiles and clean energy to defence. India and the central Asian countries – Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan – also called upon 'relevant authorities' for an early meeting of the India-Central Asia Rare Earth Forum, which last met in September. 'The ministers also encouraged exchange of delegations to explore new areas of cooperation in critical minerals,' the statement said, adding the sides agreed to hold their next meeting in 2026. Rare earths are a group of 17 elements used in the creation of magnets that power motion for cars, cellphones, missiles and other electronics. China mines about 60 per cent of the world's rare earths and makes 90 per cent of rare earth magnets. Beijing, however, has announced export restrictions on these in April as part of its sweeping response to US President Donald Trump's tariffs. India is holding talks with companies to establish long-term stockpiles of rare earth magnets by offering fiscal incentives for domestic production, as it looks to reduce dependence on shipments from China. It also plans to launch incentives for recycling 24 critical minerals – a plan that is in the final stages of approval – as it looks to secure the minerals needed for green energy transition. Police vehicle involved in accident with cyclist along Keppel Road, officer assisting with investigations
SINGAPORE: Police investigations are ongoing after an accident involving a police vehicle and a cyclist along Keppel Road towards Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE) at around 3.10pm on Friday (Jun 6). Preliminary investigations found that the driver of the vehicle, a regular police officer from the Special Operations Command (SOC), allegedly left the scene after colliding with the cyclist, they said on Saturday, adding that the 30-year-old man is assisting with investigations. The cyclist, a 41-year-old man, was taken conscious to the hospital. Police said the driver was not aware of the collision until the Traffic Police contacted the SOC. The officer returned to the scene immediately to assist with investigations upon being informed, they added. "The officer is assisting with investigations for driving without due consideration of other road users and for causing hurt," said the police.
