Controversial Brigadier not assigned to visible policing, but to Technical Unit

The Citizen18-07-2025
The police have refuted claims that a brigadier — allegedly currently out on bail for corruption charges and criticised for her lack of operational policing experience — was appointed to lead the Visible Policing (Vispol) unit in Pretoria's Moot district.
In response to outrage over the appointment, national police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe clarified that the member was transferred to the Technology Management Service (TMS), where she will work in line with her qualifications, which include a National Diploma in Mechatronics Engineering and a BTech in Industrial Engineering. According to SAPS, she is not tasked with overseeing frontline policing operations but is filling a support role aligned with her expertise.
'The SAPS has lateral entry opportunities for individuals with specialised skills or expertise,' SAPS explained. 'These professionals are considered for positions that require specific skills other than policing, meaning policing won't be their core function because they are rendering a support function to the core mandate of SAPS. These professionals are employed based on their experience and qualifications, mainly in the support environments of the SAPS.'
The police further pointed to several other examples of lateral appointments in the organisation:
The Divisional Commissioner for Supply Chain Management, previously a chief director at National Treasury, joined SAPS in 2022.
A 35‑year‑old Major General in the Hawks, who is a chartered accountant and certified fraud examiner, was appointed in 2021 from a parastatal and now heads forensic investigations.
The SAPS CFO, with a BCom in accounting, joined at the rank of colonel 20 years ago.
Lieutenant General (Dr) Bongiwe Zulu, now head of SAPS training, entered SAPS at colonel level at the age of 35 and holds two PhDs — in Education and
in
Criminology and Forensic Studies.
This comes after the Democratic Alliance (DA) slammed the appointment as 'outrageous' and a clear example of nepotism, demanding it be reversed immediately to protect the integrity of the police service.
'We demand the immediate reversal of this indefensible decision and will use Parliament's accountability mechanisms to ensure full transparency about how such an appointment was made.
'This decision is nothing short of outrageous. The Brigadier in question was one of several senior Crime Intelligence members arrested just weeks ago on charges including fraud, corruption and abuse of SAPS secret service funds. SAPS management now claims this is a 'temporary transfer' under the Disciplinary Regulations, which allow for redeployment if a member's presence in their current post is untenable. But nothing in the regulations justifies failing to impose precautionary suspension, which exists specifically to protect investigations and institutional integrity in cases exactly like this.'

Nigerian rapper 3GAR to face charges for reckless driving after McLaren crash in Sea Point

. The driver of the McLaren that had a high-speed accident in Sea Point will be prosecuted. Image: Atlantic Seaboard Community Forum The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has confirmed that Nigerian rapper Prince Daniel Obioma, known by his stage name 3GAR, will be prosecuted for reckless or negligent driving after crashing his McLaren 570S in Sea Point earlier this year. The crash occurred on March 1 on High Level Road, where the high-performance vehicle allegedly reached speeds of up to 200km/h before slamming into a wall. Obioma was hospitalised after the incident. Despite CCTV footage capturing the vehicle travelling at high speed and a public outcry, no arrest has yet been made, and charges have not been formally laid. Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said: 'Kindly be advised that the case docket is still at the office of the Senior State Prosecutor and this office is awaiting the outcome of the decision.' However, regional NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila confirmed: 'We have decided to prosecute. He will be summoned, but he has not yet been served with a J175. There is no court date at this stage.' The delay in taking action has drawn criticism from political figures, including DA MP Nicholas Gotsell, who serves on the Select Committee for Security and Justice. 'The wheels of justice are turning, whether you are an ordinary motorist or a so-called celebrity. Nobody is above the law,' said Gotsell. 'After months of pressure on SAPS to stop stalling and shift out of neutral to finalise the investigation, the NPA has now confirmed that the driver will face charges of reckless or negligent driving. Reckless drivers have no place tearing through our neighbourhoods and endangering lives, no matter where you live or what you drive.' Gotsell accused police of dragging their feet, despite clear video evidence. 'It has been months since a McLaren supercar, driven recklessly through Sea Point by a well-known rapper, crashed into a wall. Yet, SAPS has still not laid any charges or made any arrests,' he said. 'Despite clear CCTV footage and mounting public frustration, the investigation remains stalled, and the silence from SAPS is deafening.' Gotsell stated he wrote twice to Western Cape Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembisile Patekile to seek clarity on the case. 'The response was non-committal and said that he cannot offer a timeline on when it will be completed.' He questioned why a case backed by visual evidence remained unresolved, particularly at a station like Sea Point, which he noted does not face the same caseload as other precincts in the province. 'My response to him was that Sea Point police station is not nearly as busy as other stations in the Western Cape, and therefore I find it strange that an investigation like this has not delivered any decisions in two months.' Gotsell said the matter highlighted a broader problem with how authorities respond to reckless driving in Cape Town. 'There must be consequences, not just to hold this individual accountable, but to send a clear message: reckless driving endangers lives, and no amount of fame or fanfare will place you above the law.' He previously criticised the public response, saying Obioma had continued to build an online persona while avoiding accountability. 'The rapper who crashed the McLaren continues to reinvent himself online, now boasting about his other car, fortunately, an SUV,' Gotsell said. 'But his safety does not undo the danger he posed to others. His narrative of victimhood has been widely accepted by fans, and, it seems, by the police as well.' [email protected]

The group of illegal miners appeared in the Barberton Magistrate's Court. As 494 illegal miners who were arrested last week appear in the Barberton Magistrate's Court in Mpumalanga on Tuesday, a further 24 have surfaced at the Sheba Mine. The suspects, who appeared in groups of 50 in the dock, face charges of trespassing, possession of gold-bearing materials, and the contravention of the Immigration Act. The suspects, foreign nationals, are from eSwatini and Mozambique and include minors.

Call for action after Cape cyclist attacked, killed

Dennis Hammar, who completed over 40 consecutive Cape Town Cycle Tours and was a beloved figure in the cycling community, tragically passed away after he was attacked and robbed while out on a ride. The 76-year-old succumbed to his injuries after he was attacked when cycling from Paarden Eiland on the N1, joining FW de Klerk Boulevard on the Foreshore, with an unidentified male reported to have pushed him off his bike before stealing his cellphone. He was taken to a nearby hospital, but was unable to recover from his injuries, which included multiple fractures. Neil Robinson, the CEO of the Pedal Power Association, raised concerns about ongoing attacks on cyclists, particularly in crime hot spots. 'We are very saddened to hear of another death, it has been ongoing problem and there has been interventions from the SAPS and we are appealing to cyclists to avoid these areas.' A local Cape community group also made a post on social media, highlight how heartbreaking this latest incident was. 'Cape Town, our beloved Mother City, is breaking our hearts again. Just weeks after a hiker's life was shattered on Table Mountain, another tragedy has struck. 'Dennis completed over 40 consecutive Cape Town Cycle Tours, his love for this city shining through every pedal stroke. But that love was not returned. His wife, Sharon, now faces unimaginable grief, left with a painful truth: The city and country he loved so much have let us all down. 'This is what loss looks like: 'A cycling community silenced, their rides now haunted by the absence of a legend. 'A family torn apart, their memories of laughter replaced by endless sorrow. 'A widow, alone in the dawn's quiet, clutching memories of her 'darling husband,' asking why Cape Town turned so heartless. 'Our streets, once alive with runners, cyclists, and walkers, are now shadowed by fear. From Table Mountain to city bridges, spaces of freedom have become sites of violence. 'How many more must suffer before we act? How many more vigils, tributes, or posts before empty promises turn into real change? 'To our leaders: Words of condolence are not enough. We need action, stronger policing, better lighting, and accountability for criminals.' Stay Wider of the Rider group supported a memorial ride for Hammar this past weekend, which was organised by Club100 Cycling Cape Town. 'Dennis was a husband, father and grandfather and we are devastated by this incident which stems from ongoing attacks on cyclist,' the group shared on social media. Councillor Ian McMahon from City of Cape Town addressed the cyclists about safety issues in Woodstock and the CBD during the memorial ride, and a letter with concerns were handed over by Craig Sedras on behalf of the club to the City and the PPA.
