Torrance police officers plead guilty to painting swastika on car
Christopher Tomsic and Cody Weldin pled guilty Thursday after initially pleading not guilty to the charges in 2021.
The victim's vehicle was tied to a reported mail theft and was taken to a tow yard. When the defendants in the mail theft case came to pick up their car, they discovered the swastika painted on the car's rear seat, as well as a happy face painted on the front seat.
'Vandalizing property with hateful messages is reprehensible and violates the oath police officers take to uphold the law and protect and serve their communities,' District Attorney Nathan Hochman said.

Tomsic and Weldin, both 32, pleaded guilty to one count each of felon vandalism and were sentenced to two years of formal probation, restitution to the victim, the surrender of their Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification, 100 hours of community service, a tour of the Museum of Tolerance and 15 hours of Anti-Racism coursework, the D.A.'s office stated.
In addition, officials ensured Tomsic and Weldin 'will never again work as police officers in our state,' Hochman said.
The Torrance Police Department was commended by the D.A.'s Office for its swift action against the officers.
'The actions of these former officers were disgraceful and violated the core values of our department,' Torrance Police Chief Jeremiah Hart said.
A progress report is scheduled for July 10 at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center.

Police commissioner speaks to Shirley business owners as she vows to tackle crime
The Hampshire Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) met with business owners in Shirley this afternoon as she vowed to tackle anti-social behaviour in the area. It comes after business owners have been subjected to five months of vandalism and verbal abuse from a group of teenagers, which in some cases has seen them be on the receiving end of racist remarks. Speaking to the Echo in Shirley Precinct after meeting with the affected business owners and members of the council, PCC Donna Jones outlined plans to tackle anti-social behaviour in the area, which included private security guards patrolling the high street, the implementation of CCTV cameras in the precinct, and increased police patrols in the region. PCC Donna Jones said: 'I've got a clear message for the young people who are involved in this criminality, it stops now. 'What these businesses have been through over the last five months is completely unacceptable, they are closing their businesses during the day, they're putting the shutters down, we have a gang of young people causing chaos and havoc, committing racially aggravated assaults, enough is enough. 'I'm going to be funding extra CCTV to go around the high street, I'll be funding probably two security guards who will be patrolling the high street during the core hours the shops are open, and they'll be a step up in police patrols here. 'We've got a crown prosecutor from the CPS who we hope to bring onboard as a key partner to make sure they understand what is going on here in terms of the levels of harm and organised criminality, and we'll be following up today's meeting in a few weeks to see if things have calmed down.' Business owners in the precinct hailed the plans as a 'positive step forward,' but expressed frustration that the crime they'd experienced in the area hadn't been tackled sooner. Nnenna Okonkwo, owner of Sunnyday International Foods, said: 'Today is a positive step forward. 'We've needed some help for a while and it was good to talk about everything today with the police commissioner, we hope the changes she's mentioned will have a positive impact on the area and end the abuse shop owners have been facing.' Naani Shaik, manager of Subway in Shirley Precinct, added: 'We've experienced mental torture on a daily basis. 'I wish we could have had this meeting weeks ago but today was constructive. 'Today, I've seen more police patrols in the precinct, and I hope that continues tomorrow.' Leader of Southampton City Council and ward councillor for Shirley, Alexander Winning, said crime was 'unacceptable,' and sympathised with the issues businesses have been facing. New poll exposes trouble for rivals in heated NYC mayoral race as one candidate takes commanding lead
New York City Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani maintains a hefty lead in the race, according to a recent Siena poll of registered voters. Mamdani is polling at 44%, and former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who's running as an independent, is at 25%. Republican Curtis Sliwa is at 12%, and incumbent Mayor Eric Adams is at 7%. "While City Democrats favor Mamdani over Cuomo 53-32%, with single digits for the other two, more than two-thirds of City Republicans support Sliwa. City independent voters are more closely divided, with 30% supporting Mamdani and 20% supporting Adams," Siena pollster Steven Greenberg said in a press release on Tuesday. Cuomo Opponents Slam His Re-entry Into Nyc Mayor Race, Say City Wants To Move On From Ex Governor "City voters under 35 are overwhelmingly supporting Mamdani, as are a plurality of voters 35-54, however, voters 55 and older back Cuomo over Mamdani, 38-32%," he added. In fact, among Democrats statewide, Cuomo's favorability rating is 36-56%, down from 51-39% in March," he said. Cuomo, Adams Trade Shots Over Who Should Drop Out In Race Against Mamdani For Nyc Mayor Adams, who opted to pursue the race as an independent, is also facing favorability woes, according to the poll. The mayor was indicted by the Department of Justice last year on bribery, conspiracy and campaign finance charges, but the case was later dropped. Adams has presented himself as a pro-law enforcement alternative to Mamdani, especially after the 345 Park Avenue office shooting last month. "Adams is also underwater with voters in the City, 30-58%, statewide 22-51%, and among Democrats statewide 22-59%," Greenberg said. "Sliwa has a 26-30% statewide favorability rating, and 30-42% in the City." The recent poll comes as the nation's eyes remain on the race, as Mamdani's win was seen as an upset against Cuomo, and the Democratic nominee has pushed several far-left policies. Currently, Mamdani is doing an anti-Trump tour across the city. "There is no borough that will be free from Trump's cruelty," Mamdani said on Monday. "We will feel the pain of this legislation, whether we are in Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens or Staten Island, and we will shine a light this week and every week on the costs of this vision that is coming out of Washington, D.C." Cuomo is even pitching "Zohran's Law" after it came out that Mamdani lives in a rent-stabilized apartment. "Rent-stabilized apartments when they're vacant should only be rented to people who need affordable housing, not people like Zohran Mamdani," Cuomo told reporters in a video posted on social media on Sunday. "We must remember that Andrew Cuomo has spent more time talking about my apartment than asking why so many New Yorkers are being forced out of theirs. He has spent more time criticizing me than he has in criticizing the legislation that Donald Trump has passed," Mamdani fired back on Tuesday.
