Exclusive: Polygon co-founder Sandeep Nailwal says 'no plans' for ETF, slams premature filings originally appeared on TheStreet.
As the crypto market sees a flurry of exchange-traded fund (ETF) filings following the greenlight for Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs, Polygon co-founder Sandeep Nailwal says the network has no intention of joining the rush — at least not anytime soon.
'Most of the crypto companies are filing for these ETFs, while most of them know that it's not going to be approved for the next 3-4 years,' Nailwal said in a conversation with TheStreet Roundtable's Senior Editor Mehab Qureshi. 'They are not that decentralized, they are not that trustless and all that.'
Rather than spending millions in lobbying and legal fees to push for a token-backed ETF, Nailwal said Polygon's strategy is to focus on product development and user growth.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is currently reviewing over 70 crypto-related ETF filings, signaling a growing appetite among asset managers to offer regulated exposure to altcoins.
Following the landmark approvals of spot Bitcoin ETFs in January 2024 and spot Ethereum ETFs in May 2024, firms have expanded their focus beyond the top two cryptocurrencies. Now, new filings include applications for ETFs tied to Solana (SOL), XRP, Cardano (ADA), Avalanche (AVAX), Dogecoin (DOGE), Litecoin (LTC), and even Tron (TRX).
'When the asset is ready, the market actually automatically goes forward,' Nailwal said. 'I would want to take Polygon's fundamental interaction to a place where a large ETF provider reaches out to us automatically. Instead of we paying millions of dollars that, we'll go and buy our ETFs.'
His remarks come amid growing optimism in the crypto industry after the approval of Ethereum ETFs and the launch of dozens of filings from smaller firms, many betting on future regulatory clarity under the Trump administration.
But Nailwal says filing for an ETF prematurely could be a distraction.
'I don't want to spend any of that. I better focus my efforts on getting the fundamental traction of users,' he said. 'And then the ETFs and the markets will push forward.'
In the same conversation, Nailwal also addressed concerns around Ethereum's stagnating price action and declining narrative dominance.
'There was a narrative violation for Ethereum that maybe Ethereum was not the L1,' he said, referring to the rise of other layer-2 execution environments that pulled attention away from Ethereum's core value.
'But if you see in terms of the value, I think still around 80 to 90 percent of all the value created in crypto exists on Ethereum,' he added. 'Ethereum powers the settlement for the security and the subvention for hundreds and hundreds of these layer-1 chains.'
Nailwal acknowledged that questions remain about how ETH as an asset accrues value, but emphasized the broader ecosystem remains robust.
While Polygon is open to re-evaluating its ETF stance depending on macroeconomic changes, Nailwal said it will take more than market noise to move the needle.
'If the Fed pivots and the rates start going down… and then we start seeing a lot of demand on the ETF side. Sure, we might look into that,' he said. 'But as of now, [we] will be completely focused on our products.'

McDonald's menu adds nostalgic new item after fan backlash

Just when Americans thought McDonald's had forgotten about them, it surprised them with an exciting release they weren't expecting. For years, McDonald's has been facing customer backlash for constantly launching unique and exotic new menu items in every other country besides the U.S., leaving Americans no other option but to drool over these releases rather than be able to taste them. It also launched the Crispy Mac 'N Cheesy Wrap and Potato Pops, but made them a Singapore exclusive. It's got a celebrated Hot One's collab, but only in France. Image source:Many fans have taken to social media platforms to express their disappointment at being left out of nearly all the most viral menu item launches despite McDonald's being a U.S.-based chain. Lately, the fast-food giant has been inserting nostalgic marketing as part of its business strategy to boost growth. Uber announces a game-changing new feature

Before Uber (UBER) launched in 2009, there were pretty much only a few ways for travelers in need of a ride to get from point A to point B: call a taxi, hop on a bus, or call up a friend and ask for a ride. For those who remember it, the taxi experience was far from a pleasurable option. Most taxi drivers weren't very friendly, and some would barely talk to you aside from a few grunts to find out your destination. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter And as for the actual driving you might experience in a taxi, was best to buckle your seatbelt back in those days. Uber transformed all of that with its innovative ride-sharing model, which encouraged people to use their own cars and earn money by providing rides for people. Related: Uber shares new budget-friendly pricing model While taxis do still exist, they're taken a lot less these days - it's just a lot easier to summon a ride on your phone (not to mention the majority of Uber drivers are not as spirited of drivers as, say, aggressive taxi drivers in New York City). Naturally, to keep up with changing times, even major innovators have to continually reinvent themselves. Uber is doing just that with the rollout of a new feature that makes the service even more accessible to a wider variety of people. Uber announced on June 4 that it would launch a new type of account specifically created for senior adults. Using Uber's family profile system, a family member can organize a ride for a senior family member and even tracking the ride in their own app in real time. In addition, Uber's also announced Simple Mode, larger text and easy-to-follow directions. While this new format is also available in Senior Mode, it can be used by a Senior adult who wants to schedule their own rides. The new modes also offer the ability to save frequently visited places and flexible payment methods, including using their own card, a family member's, or even an eligible Medicare Flex card. Uber worked with aging advocates and accessibility experts to develop these features with the aim of making transportation easier for older adults who do not drive or cannot drive safely. Related: Uber CEO shares key advice that drives his success "Transportation is one of the biggest barriers to independence as people age," said Silvia Candamil Neirra, Vice President, Global Initiative on Ageing and Longevity. "Solutions like Uber's senior accounts help break down that barrier by offering a simple and flexible way for older adults to get where they need to go-without always having to rely on others. It's about dignity, freedom, and staying connected to the people and places that matter most." Uber says it will send notifications to account holders via email today to let them know the service is active and available for use. In addition to the U.S., the new modes will be available in Taiwan, Hong Kong, India (Simple Mode only), Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Portugal, France, and South Africa. Uber has been busy preparing upgrades for its business lately. The announcement of Senior and Simple Mode come not long after the ridesharing app announced Route Share, a new service that sounds a lot like a bus. Route Share is clearly an effort to offer a mode of transportation for those who need a more budget-conscious option, as it can cost up to 50% less than an UberX. It works by running dozens of fixed routes with fixed stops, and riders will share the car with up to two other people going to the same destination. Route Share is now available in New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, Boston, and Baltimore, and Uber says other cities will be added soon. Another ‘green' company files Chapter 11 bankruptcy

Do you get sick of hearing "climate change" every day? Me too. Whether the reason you can't stand the term anymore is that you are one of the people believing it is all a big conspiracy theory or just because of the aggressive and kind of pathetic environmental activists' actions, it doesn't really matter. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter I mean, what kind of good does it do throwing soup at such a masterpiece as the Mona Lisa? I would bow in front of that painting. Also, how would that action actually help the environment? Do they really think that such a disgraceful act would entice more people to join them in their ecological efforts? I think not. Then, there are also those celebrities who constantly talk about climate change and donate a lot of money to the cause but then travel in their personal jets on a whim. However, there are actually people, organizations, and companies that are doing the right things and doing the real work to save our planet. And yes, our planet actually needs our help to recover after we have driven it nearly to the end of the road. Unfortunately, many green companies are having trouble surviving, as they are facing high interest rates, delayed tax credits, and challenges to secure funding. Recently, another solar company filed for bankruptcy. Sunova Energy (NOVA) is a publicly traded solar solutions provider with a market capitalization of around $26 million. The Houston, Texas-based company, founded in 2012, offers solar panel installations, battery storage, and related services to homeowners and businesses. It is considered one of the largest residential-solar companies in the U.S. Related: Amazon is selling $80 solar-powered patio lights for $24, and they create 'a lovely atmosphere' As of December 31, 2024, it operated a fleet of residential solar energy systems with a generation capacity of around 2,892 megawatts serving more than 441,000 customers across the U.S. However, the company has been dealing with many challenges in the rooftop market, and it has suffered heavy net losses in recent years. The last few months revealed that the company is having serious financial troubles. In February, the company laid off 15% of its workforce to save $35 million. Then, in March, the company informed investors that it may run out of money in the next 12 months. Following the going concern announcement, in May, the US administration amended a $2.92 billion partial loan guarantee for Sunnova Energy, reducing the amount to $371.6 million. More Bankruptcy: Thousands of NYC rentals just hit bankruptcy courtHuge trucking company files for Chapter 11 bankruptcyStruggling firearms company closes down business In the most recent news, one of Sunnova's subsidiaries has gone bankrupt. On June 1, Sunnova TEP Developer LLC, one of around 40 Sunnova Energy subsidiaries, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the Southern District of Texas, as reported in Solar Power World. The company disclosed $100 million to $500 million in both assets and liabilities and indicated that there will be funds to distribute to unsecured creditors. Related: Jim Cramer sends a blunt message on Microsoft layoffs According to the Chapter 11 filing, Sunnova's board was already considering new strategies, including a possible sale, even before the filing, reports the USA Herald. The parent company formed a special committee to assess potential conflicts that could arise from any such transaction. Sunnova is not the only solar company struggling in the challenging environment for the TPO market. Some of the major solar contractors that went bankrupt over the last couple of years include SunPower, Pink Energy, MC Solar, Harness Power, ASA, NM Solar Group, Erus Energy, Kuubix Energy, ADT Solar, Suntuity Renewables, Vision Solar, Solcius, Sunworks, Kayo Energy, Titan Solar Power, and many more. As if the high interest rates aren't enough, the solar companies might get another huge blow if the current budget bill debated in the Senate is passed. The bill would prohibit solar leasing companies from collecting the investment tax credit. Year-to-date, Sunnova stock is down 84.91% trading at 20 cents per share.
