
Reading Your Brain Waves To Treat a Debilitating Disease
Liza Bobrow didn't think it was a big deal when her handwriting suddenly went haywire.
'It was just so bizarre,' she remembers. 'My handwriting was getting teeny-tiny. I couldn't even sign a check. I had just turned 50 so I thought 'I'm getting old. I must have arthritis, or a pinched nerve or writer's cramp.' So, when the doctors told me it was Parkinson's Disease, I was terrified.'
Medication helped at first.
Her handwriting returned to near normal. But Parkinson's is a progressive disease—it usually worsens over time.
Two years after her diagnosis, the medication began triggering bouts of dystonia. She suffered painful muscle spasms in her feet that made walking difficult. Her right arm would suddenly shoot out and she would have to cradle it back in with her left arm.
'The pain was so bad that I didn't want to take the medication,' she said. 'But without the medicine I struggled with motor skills. It was a terrible time.'
Neurologists eventually suggested deep brain stimulation (DBS), a surgical procedure in which electrodes are implanted in specific spots in the brain to deliver electrical stimulation to help control tremor, rigidity, and bradykinesia. Bobrow and her husband spent six months researching DBS and consulting her doctors before deciding to proceed.
'I had never had surgery in my life, so the idea of brain surgery was pretty scary,' she said. 'But I had an incredible experience, and the results are profound. My motor skill fluctuation is less and in general it's just a feeling of relaxation and comfort in my body that I just didn't have before DBS.'
Revolutionary leap in DBS therapy
DBS has been around for decades. A pacemaker-like device is implanted in the upper chest and thin wires lead to precise locations in the brain, where electrodes deliver electrical stimulation that can help control some of the symptoms from Parkinson's.
Even though traditional DBS is proven as a safe and effective treatment for Parkinson's, the level of stimulation is constant/pre-programmed. But it has limitations. The human body and brain are constantly changing and adjusting, as the various symptoms of Parkinson's disease and medication levels can fluctuate in intensity throughout the day. So, the amount of electrical stimulation needed to optimally treat Parkinson's may also change.
'I went through a lot of programming sessions to refine the device settings,' Bobrow said. 'You can't just set it and forget about it.'
For many patients, that's about to change.
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved the Medtronic Adaptive Deep Brain Stimulation (aDBS) system for use in the U.S. for patients with Parkinson's disease. With aDBS, the electrodes that deliver electrical stimulation can also sense the patient's brain signals and automatically adjust the level of stimulation to meet the patient's needs.1 A few programming adjustment visits may be needed in the first few months after turning on Adaptive Therapy. Patients programmed with Adaptive Therapy may require more programming adjustment visits if they experience stimulation-related side effects or need to further personalize programming settings.
'The aDBS system listens to these brain waves and then algorithms adjust the stimulation in real time according to what the brain waves tell us about their symptoms. It's a very exciting development,' said Dr. Simon Little, a neurologist at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF).
Living the dream
Liza Bobrow received her DBS device before the FDA approval of aDBS; however, a software upgrade to aDBS does not require surgery. Her device already includes the brain sensing technology†; if her doctors decide she is a candidate for aDBS, it would be a matter of activating this technology in her current device.
'Adaptability is obviously the next frontier. I can tell that my body has ebbs and flows and clearly real-time stimulation adjustment is something that interests me,' Liza said.
'There's been a dream in our field for years that a device would be developed that could understand brain signals well enough to auto-deliver stimulation,' added Dr. Philip Starr, professor of neurological surgery at UCSF. 'Now the dream is real. This field of neuromodulation is sort of like turning back the clock. It can take people with a chronic disease like Parkinson's and give them a better quality of life. The rejuvenation that people experience is dramatic and as a clinician it's a wonderful thing to participate in.'

Presentation for CDC advisers appears to cite nonexistent study to support claims about risk of vaccine preservative
A presentation slated to be shared at this week's meeting of vaccine advisers to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention claimed that a study in animals suggested that use of the vaccine preservative thimerosal can have 'long-term consequences in the brain.' But the study doesn't appear to exist. Lyn Redwood, a former leader of Children's Health Defense, an anti-vaccine group that lists US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as a founder, is scheduled to give the presentation Thursday at a meeting of the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. The slides, posted online Tuesday, cite a 2008 study in the journal Neurotoxicology by 'Berman RF, et al,' called 'Low-level neonatal thimerosal exposure: Long-term consequences in the brain.' The presentation claimed that results from a study in newborn rats suggest long-term 'neuroimmune effects' from the vaccine preservative. The citation appears to refer to Dr. Robert F. Berman, a professor emeritus at the University of California Davis, whose research has focused on brain injury and neurodevelopmental disorders. However, 'I don't have a publication in Neurotoxicology by that title,' Berman told CNN. 'The reference in the slide set, as far as I know – at least with me as a coauthor – does not exist.' Berman did publish a paper with a similar title in 2008, but it was in a different journal and involved different animals. It also came to dramatically different conclusions. 'My study was published in Toxicological Sciences and did not find evidence of thimerosal exposure at vaccine levels in mouse behaviors that we thought were relevant to autism,' Berman said. He was 'concerned and displeased' that his research appeared to have been cited in this way in Redwood's slides. Redwood's presentation was taken off the CDC website later Tuesday and replaced with a version that does not include Berman's citation. The citation was first flagged by Dr. David Boulware, an infectious diseases professor at the University of Minnesota, who told CNN, 'The conclusion on that slide seemed really strong and definitive, and thus I wanted to look up the paper to see if the results matched their interpretation of it. … And I couldn't find the citation.' Neither Redwood nor HHS immediately responded to CNN's request for comment on the presentation. The presentation already was controversial because thimerosal has been a focus of advocates who claim, against evidence, that it may cause autism because it contains a form of mercury. The preservative was taken out of most vaccines about 25 years ago as a precaution, and no evidence of neurodevelopmental effects has been found in multiple studies. Redwood, though, said in a video posted last month on Children's Health Defense's website that she believes thimerosal in pediatric vaccines led to her son's autism. The topic was a last-minute addition to the vaccine advisers' agenda this week, sparking concerns among public health experts that it would raise debunked claims about vaccine safety. It was added after Kennedy dismissed all 17 previous experts on the influential vaccine panel, claiming they had conflicts of interest, and replaced them days later with eight new members. Those members have raised concerns from the public health world and across the political spectrum, with Sen. Bill Cassidy, the Louisiana doctor who chairs the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, calling this week for the meeting to be postponed 'until the panel is fully staffed with more robust and balanced representation – as required by law – including those with more direct relevant expertise.' It's also not the first time a report in Kennedy's realm has been found to have faulty citations. The initial version of the Trump administration's Make America Healthy Again report, released last month and focused on children's health, also cited some studies that don't exist. An HHS spokesperson called them 'minor citation and formatting errors.' In a hearing before the House Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee on Tuesday, Kennedy was questioned by Rep. Raul Ruiz, a Democrat and doctor from California, about the MAHA report errors. 'Why did the report include a citation to sources that don't even exist?' Ruiz asked. 'How does that happen under your leadership?' Kennedy insisted that 'all of the foundational assertions in that report are accurate' and said the mistaken citations 'were corrected within 24 hours.'

One person injured in blaze at medical building in Tamarac, officials say
One person was hospitalized with burns and smoke inhalation after a fire broke out Tuesday afternoon at a medical building in Tamarac, according to the Tamarac Fire Department. Crews responded to the blaze at the HCA complex, where flames were visible from third-floor windows, officials said in a statement. Fire rescue units from Sunrise, Margate and the Broward Sheriff's Office assisted Tamarac Fire in extinguishing the flames. A female patient was transported to a local hospital and was later taken to a specialized burn unit in Miami-Dade County, fire officials said. Fire marshals and the City of Tamarac will investigate the cause of the fire.

Dogs cool off at Pennsylvania pool for pets amid heat wave
Animal welfare advocates in the Philadelphia area are starting to get calls about hot pet emergencies. This record-breaking heat wave is dangerous for people and pets alike. Skyler, an 11-year-old lab, knows just where to go to escape the heat. She loves the pool at the Surf Dog Swim Spa in Abington, Pennsylvania. Marie Sankus, who has three labs, said swimming is a big part of her strategy for keeping the dogs safe in the heat. "You gotta be so careful with walking them on asphalt or the pavement," Sankus said. "If it's too hot for your feet, it's too hot for their paws. That's why I go early in the morning, late in the evening for walks." But here, she has no worries about the heat. "We're air conditioned," said Jim Mosteller, of the Surf Dog Swim Spa. "The water is cool in the pool. Usually it's warm, I cooled it down for this heat wave." Mosteller said his swim spa is a healthy way for dogs to cool off and get some exercise "They're building every muscle in their body, they're stretching every tendon, but the biggest thing is their respiratory system, they're working out," Mosteller said. It costs $75 for 30 minutes. And for dogs who don't have access to a pool, being outside in the heat is dangerous. Just like people, pets can suffer from heat exhaustion and heat stroke. "If your dog is at a respiratory rate of 100 … where they are just (panting) as fast as they can, and that tongue is as far out of their mouth as they can, you gotta stop," said veterinarian Dr. Seth Shirey. Veterinarians say it's best to keep pets inside air conditioning and make sure they have enough water to drink or swim in.
